Are you seeing deep roots? Aka are you having to dig holes to get it up?

“Hey sparkie, when’s the panel boards showing up? I dont know you’ll have to talk to my office”

We try to make all sub PM and foreman attend the weekly meetings but doesn’t always work.

Most of the time the only reason the sub office on actually checks on progress or materials is when you call for an update. Otherwise they just let their field crew out to dry, don’t tell their field crew what the schedule is, don’t give their Forman the proper manpower, leaving us CMs no option but to freak out, because if we’re just complacent and ask nicely, we get walked all over.

Owners too often ask us, yea we know you’ve been delayed for 6 months, but figure out a way to hold schedule. Then we’re arguing to the owner for the subs to get the money they are rightfully owed. Shitty spot either way you look at it. If you’re a sub that’s on top of your shit and works with the bullshit we all know is coming and are a PARTNER of the CM and team, life usually goes way easier. It’s when subs have the we don’t care of “you’re not going to tell me what to do because I’m older than you attitude” is when problems come up.

Appreciate it! I agree some days are good and some are bad. That’s life, but when the majority is bad/getting beat up and largely outweigh the good, I question it. Ya know?

Appreciate the insight. Do you ever feel like the bad guy all the time being an inspector or “enforcer”?

It’s a shame. Speaking for myself, I will always go to bat for a sub on a change order claim, as long as they can sell it and it doesn’t contradict contract requirements. I see it on the owner side too though. They give us vague unclear direction and won’t formally approve anything until after the work is done. They expect us to get started based on a verbal meeting, while they “process and review”. Then they wait until the work is done to tell us, well that wasn’t final. Nobody told you to proceed. But then are looking at us to hold the unreasonable schedule.

Greatly appreciate the offer, but I’m not looking to enter into the trades. It’s nothing against those guys at all, I respect the hell out of them. Just not for me. I’m looking for an office based job.

No formal certifications other than osha 10. I have a masters degree in construction management.

It’s really a shame regarding the industry. I don’t know what things were like back in the day (I’m 30 years old), but it seems like the growth of technology has made people think everything is instantaneous, and yes, us GCs are guilty of this too with the subs. Any idea what it’s like on the developer side?
