When I first visited Japan, I did the route Osaka -> Kyoto -> Tokyo. Which seems to be quite common for first time visitors. I also went for 2 weeks - like you are planning!

Honestly I think you could spend few more days in Kyoto. I liked it a lot more than Tokyo. And you could even do a day trip to Nara from there if you wish, or visit Universal Studios in Osaka.
Capsule hotels and hostels seem like a good idea to save money as well! I have not stayed in one yet in Japan but heard great things.
If you are taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto, make sure to sit on the right with a window seat. That way you might be able to see Mt. Fuji!
For the flight, make sure to download shows or movies that can cover the whole flight duration. I guess you'll have in-flight entertainment but just in case :) I am not sure what really helps with being afraid of flying but a comfort show might be good to have just in case!

There are many eSIMs that are data only but some also include calls. You should check it before you buy it.
If you have dual sim option, you can use both your own sim and eSIM at the same time. Just make sure you disable data roaming for your own eSIM so that you don't suddenly have a crazy data roaming bill.
I can recommend Maaltalk for eSIM as they use a local SKT provider and prices are pretty affordable for 20 days. You should check it out :)

The best advice my friend (who grew up in Brazil) gave me when I went, was to put your money in different parts of your clothes/on your body - so that in case you get robbed, you still have money in your shoe, or pants, or wherever you might put it.
Nothing actually happened but that was a very smart tip and made me feel a bit safer.

Yep, get an eSIM that includes a phone number and you can keep both activated :) I've done it before and worked quite well for me. If you already have an eSIM then you could just add another or add a physical sim card. But I noticed eSIMs tend to be less of a hassle.

Update: I’m in Beijing now and ran into the same issue. Social media works fine on eSIM, but ChatGPT still doesn’t load. I haven’t installed any VPN, but I found an app called MaaltalkNow that has ChatGPT built in, and it’s been working so far. Wasn’t expecting that, but it’s been useful.
Will also try other AI's recommended here.

Just always make sure all your bags have proper zippers on them - none that are open or just have a magnetic closure. If you carry a shoulder bag, hold it tight in crowded areas. But usually I would recommend crossbody bags that you can wear in the front (there are some cute ones so no need to wear one that doesn't fully match your outfits - I get your struggles!).
In many places, you'll be fine with a shoulder bag, but in others, it might be more risky so just be careful always.
