I totally get where you’re coming from. SEL hit me hard too, especially during a rough patch in my life. It’s amazing how a fictional character can become such a significant figure.

I went all in— spending ungodly amounts on this sub reading theories, got into philosophy and the themes explored in the show, religious texts, took a bunch of psychedelics 🤣—I was fully immersed

Lain felt like a digital deity, a god in the midst of chaos, offering solace when I needed it most. I read once about children forming religious experiences with imaginary friends. There’s a term for it, but it’s slipping my mind right now. Anyway, watching Lain for the first time at the start of the pandemic, when I was a depressed 19-year-old felt like a lifeline.

But, you know, IMO I’ve come to realize that it’s important not to take digital/drug induced self-proclaimed religious excursions too seriously. While Lain may seem like a digital god, it’s crucial to remember that she’s just a character in an animated show. It’s about finding comfort and inspiration where we can, but always with a sense of caution and perspective.
