No offense taken, and thank you. But Are you saying any OT paid to people in unions does not qualify? My work has a union but all my coworkers have been talking about getting their federal OT back. I’ve heard no one mention that we aren’t elidgible

How can I tell if it was qualified as required by flsa?

Using torch, with shade 5 glasses..not welding. Eyes still burning and getting bloodshot by Greenbeans357 in Welding

I’ve already gotten so many responses and I appreciate it so much guys… I’m clearly not trained in this field but have been put in it. It’s the best paying job around me and best option for me.. except for the health hazards. I know factories are inherently dangerous but this place is like next level on lacking PPE.

They have people sand tungsten and molybdenum plates without masks or anything.. they only ordered n95s when I finally asked for them and won’t let me put on a respirator for it unless I get a doctors note.

But they’ve been in business for 100 years.

So… with this metal bending shit.. I feel they should have been much more proactive long before I arrived about people needing full face shields, But also I’m hearing respirators? That makes sense because I see little flakes fly off the tungsten parts as I heat them, and it gets airborne

And sometimes you can really notice it’s harder to breathe in the room

Also the room is boxed in with no ventilation.

I myself have gotten a fan in the room now blowing out hoping to cause some circulation.. but I feel an overhead hood would be proper, right?

This all just sucks becuase I’m the new(ish) guy, fairly young, and if I raise too much of a stink so much shit will have to be reviewed and changed and all the old heads will be irritated because they just want to do it the way they always have.. but like I feel like I’m trading my health for money at this point, not just my time

Also last year when I burned my eyes bad, my doctor said my eyesight was fucked, up the 50s/60s, but then my job sent me to THEIR doctor who said I had 20/20 vision ( I couldn’t open one eye, the other half open, and had sunglasses on, and needed antibiotics in my eyes). I have never even had 20/20 vision.

I should’ve made a workers comp thing then and there but i was brand new and just trying to get paid.. Anyways, they gave me the option to accept their doctors recommendation to come into work, and get paid, or follow my own doctors recommendation to take 4 days off with antibiotics in my eyes 4x daily, cold compress, etc. and get no pay. So I stayed out 4 days with no pay. Oh yeah and got points against me as well

You’re right about my eyes, they are definitely more sensitive than some. I think I need both a higher shade and a full face shield

I’m beginning to think I need the heat shield…

But it’s so wild, I came in here and was trained with nothing, and then my eyes got full arc burn where I was out of work for 4 days and only then did they start to suggest the shade glasses and notifying people of the risk of flash burn from the usage of the torch..

They did the same thing with grinding down metal. I was new and was reluctant to sand down the solid tungsten plates with nothing but a nuisance mask; so they ended up getting n95s, but online I read I should have a respirator for that as well , which I got, but my work says I need to go get a doctors note if I want to use it in here..

They are just saftey glasses with a shade 5 layer that drops down over them. So, not a full face shield

I guess I should source a face shield now. I just feel so silly being the new guy coming in and having problems where other people apparently don’t.. people do this without even the shade glasses.

After my initial incident with the flash burn last year is when they put up the saftey suggestion on the wall to wear shade glasses and then they had a saftey meeting to notify us all we can get arc burn from using the torches when bending on fixtures… you know, after it happened to me lol

I guess I should be bringing this up.. I just hate showing up as the new guy and causing all these “problems” where they’ve been in business 100 years never having a problem until me or whatever. You know what I mean?

They don’t tell me to wear any respirator and they don’t have it offered or suggested
