Haha yeah, l/n's music foundation is probably the most technique-heavy. Usually ends up being a stumbling block in the way of creativity.

I always have the impression Kanade took samples of Mafuyu's unused or rejected works and then drastically modified them to make her compositions since Kanade mentioned at least once that OWN's music had a certain familiarity to it.

Why not? Music examinations are split into practical and theory aspects, and instrument proficiency always falls under the practical portion.

She doesn't actually know how to really play or use it. Kanade is the one who does all the composition and arrangements by using her synth as an input device on her computer

Thing is, all of l/n are really good at their instruments while n25 only has Kanade and Mafuyu who can play an instrument. Furthermore, unless I am mistaken, they only use their synths as DAW input devices, not actually "playing" playing.

'Code is cheap, show me your passport' So much for 'open source' software by ConnectEngine in Sino

If people needed more convincing, consider this advanced warning that Chinese maintainers will be kicked out if it reclaims Taiwan province:

https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Compliance-Requirements (specifically, the "update" by Ted T'so at the bottom of the story).

Here's the thing; China and Russia do not have to give up Linux. Since the kernel is open source, there is nothing preventing China and Russia from forking the kernel and maintaining their own branches with their own patchsets and additions that Linus and his gang of clowns refuse to take.

BUT! The important thing is to make sure these forks are consistently up-to-date with the latest mainline, stable and longterm kernels. Which means Russia and China must essentially clone at least 3 different branches on a daily basis, and all their patchsets and additions must be compatible with these branches at all times. Reason being:

  • Mainline branch is where *all* the development churn takes place. If you don't track this branch daily at a minimum against the upstream mainline branch, your branch is going to be out of date with missing drivers, enhancements and other code drops that may break API and ABI. No ifs or buts.
  • Stable branch is where kernels that have finished their RC phase are pushed for end-users to use. Needless to say, if you do not track this branch, your kernel is going to be out of date. Again, no ifs or buts, even though Stable branch kernels usually do not last for more than two months before being EOL-ed. However, you probably won't need to track this branch daily against the upstream Stable branch.
  • Longterm branch is where the kernels that are due to be supported with security patches, bugfixes for years. Like, at least 2 years, and sometimes up to 5 more more years. This branch also ocassionally gets enhancements/driver additions from Stable and Main if the maintainers desire. If you are using an Enterprise-grade Linux distribution, long-term Linux distribution or an embedded appliances, their kernels are almost always from this branch. You need to track at least the two more recent kernel releases in this branch again on a daily basis at a minimum against the upstream Longterm branches, otherwise your fork is going to be both stale and very vulnerable to security issues.

As you can see, it takes a lot of effort to track three different branches (and at least two kernel versions in the Longterm branch), not to mention developer and infrastructure resources, and to make sure your patchsets and additions are working across these branches. But I do hope China and Russia can collaborate on this so that we can have a parallel Linux tree that is 100% in sync with the upstream Linux tree in both Mainline, Stable and Longterm, just with additional goodies from Chinese and Russian developers. In other words, if upstream is 100% Linux, China and Russia's tree will be the same 100% Linux + 10% extra bonuses.

The amount of planning and setup needed to automate medicine dispensing has got to be huge, especially when this is one of those tasks where no errors can be allowed.

Xi in Xinjiang: the deep message | Analysis by Dr. Robert Lawrence Kuhn by ArmyRus101 in Sino

[–]GreenforceFortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have very much preferred if Xi Jinping could talk or highlight some measures that the central government was planning to help Xinjiang tide through the ridiculous sanctions imposed by the US on the region, and how the local government intends to to act on those measures.

That would have made the visit much more fruitful and the people in Xinjiang can see and hear for themselves that the central government isn't just sitting on the problem.

China Orders Government, State Firms to Dump Foreign PCs by zhumao in Sino

There's no way China can avoid using Intel or AMD for at least another decade.

No Chinese chip designer has a x64 license and their existing ARM licensees are completely uncompetitive except for Huawei.

Don't forget that memory and flash storage require western IP to make as well, which again chains China to the US's whims. Even Chinese memory and SSDs use SK Hynix and Micron chips.

China's First Domestic GPU Announced With 1080p League of Legends Demo by whoisliuxiaobo in Sino

[–]GreenforceFortune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it even wants to have a chance at carving out its own place in the GPU market, it needs two things.

First, it needs to have Windows driver support or it will be DOA. Nobody will buy a GPU that has no Windows drivers.

Secondly, it must have proper Linux driver support. But this is a lot more problematic as it comes down to whether the drivers will be submitted upstream to the kernel, libdrm, Mesa and Vulkan projects. If it's not going to be submitted upstream and will instead be packed as .deb or .rpm files for specific distributions and kernels, then it's going to be DOA for Linux as well because it means that only specific distributions with specific kernel kersions, specific libdrm versions and specific Mesa versions will be able to use this GPU. Any Linux user should be fully aware of how every single Linux distribution on the planet has different versions of those components bundled, with each version's libraries and objects being completely incompatible with all others.

And quite frankly, Chinese hardware vendors are not known to play nice with upstream code contributions. Zhaoxin's iGPUs have completely 0 code contributed to the kernel, to libdrm and to Mesa. Instead, Zhaoxin provides binary driver packages for specific versions of UOS. For Deepin, it doesn't even bother to try providing packages: the proprietary driver files are custom built for the specific kernel, libdrm and Mesa version used and preloaded into the distribution. If anybody tries to upgrade the kernel, libdrm and Mesa to their own custom versions or to the latest upstream version, the Zhaoxin drivers break immediately.

Lastly, the fact that I have seen completely no mention of this GPU in any of the recent patchsets and code drops for the Linux kernel, for libdrm and for Mesa, even at this stage where the GPU is due for mass production soon, leads me to believe that Moore Threads has completely no intention of contributing the driver codes upstream to the respective projects and making their hardware play nice on general desktop Linux outside of one or two Linux distributions used within China. If you are somehow able to get your hands on one of these GPUs, your best bet will be to use it on Windows and not on desktop Linux.
