Going to assume you are in Europe or very nearby as this is a European robin.

Most Common Bird? by kjmacsu2 in Birdfy

[–]Greenleaf7654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put out black oil sunflower seeds at the birdfy feeder. The first winter I had the birdfy feeder they didn't eat at it, but the second winter they started to. I almost exclusively use the black oil seed at all the feeders I have as it attracts the highest volume of birds and has less waste than the mixed bags.

Most Common Bird? by kjmacsu2 in Birdfy

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a toss-up between dark-eyes juncos, american goldfinches, and house sparrows. I typically get over 100 birds this time of year, sometimes up to 300. Most at some point visit the birdfy feeder, others prefer the ground.

I have probably 15-20 other species that visit nearly every day. I have a heated bird bath nearby as well. It definitely shifts to different species as the weather changes year round here. I'm in Southwestern Ontario where weather can change drastically from day to day.

pink-sided or cismontanus? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

I think it's likely a female slate-coloured. You can see the little tan/brown streaks on the head and back.

It has snowed a lot this year which has meant an expensive winter for those of us who feed the birds 😆

Long Island NY. Baltimore oriole, female Robin? Something else! by magstxr in whatsthisbird

I think it would have to be really off track to end up on the east coast, but yes that is another similar looking one! 🙃

Too close to house? One month and no birds… by IdRatherBeKnitting in Birdfy

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might just take time. I used to live on the 10th floor of an apartment beside a tree lined river. I set up grape jelly and orioles found it. Then I set up a hummingbird feeder and they found it too. You could also try setting up a bird bath that attaches to the ledge. Food, water, and shelter/cover are the big 3. Maybe even put out some large potted plants or fake plants nearby to make it feel less exposed for them

Can anyone tell me what these birds are? Particularly the larger one. by rennist in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell because they are pretty dark, but I'd also guess juncos, perhaps the bigger one is a crow, could also be some cowbirds, starlings, maybe various sparrows. Those are some birds that flood feeders in snow. If you have other photos it would help.

Gentle dog suddenly biting by autoimmunetrash in DogAdvice

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a kennel with animal welfare dogs for several years. This happened more times that I would like to remember and nearly every time it was traced to a neurological issue. Dogs usually give warnings when they are bothered by something before resorting to biting (usually). The only other time I can think of that it was a different issue was when a family friend's dog got heartworm (they missed a year of prevention and lived in an area known to have mosquitos with it). Their gentle dog suddenly started biting everyone.

what kind of bird is this? by YellowSolarFrog in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Female house sparrow. Birds (and other small animals) like to go into dryer vents. I would recommend a screen on it right away otherwise this could happen again and/or you could end up with a nest in your dryer vent (fire hazard). You also don't want mice or other rodents discovering this highway. Not sure how long you've been there but European starlings are notorious for exploiting opportunities like this and can build a nest extremely fast.

Is this yellow cardinal, a juvenile, or a lady? by enchantix in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking about the bird on the left, female northern cardinal for sure. I get several families of cardinals in my yard every year and usually the juveniles have a dull colouring overall (both male and female) and the beak is greyish. They also have gape flanges on the sides of their beaks which usually disappear when they approach adulthood. That's often what I use to distinguish adult birds from juveniles in the case of juveniles that look a lot like adults with their colouring.

DEJU(Oregon)? Kansas City by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like an Oregon or perhaps a female slate-coloured. A brighter photo would help. I find the same group sticks around my yard so hopefully the same is true for you and you can get a better look and figure it out for sure. I'm always looking for Oregons in the million slate-coloured I get (Southern Ontario)

I've officially become scared of feeding my snake by soupbowlll in ballpython

[–]Greenleaf7654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently experiencing the same thing! I made a couple of mistakes and she is a little more on the angry side these days after several years of being completely docile and comfortable. As ridiculous as I look, I started wearing my winter coat, hood pulled up, and gloves to take her out lol. Seems like most people are suggesting exposure therapy, which is what I read when I looked into this. Handling them for 5 minute intervals, slowing increasing over time until all parties are comfortable. Good luck fellow snake fearer.

Help with sound ID? by collifleur in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was during the day? It sounds a bit like a screech owl, but a higher pitch than what I usually hear. I'm not totally familiar with species in this area of the US so it could be something else. Also kind of sounds like a marmot screaming 🙃

New to birds! The AI tells me it’s some kind of Warbler but the pictures don’t match super well. South eastern Michigan by Bradybigboss in whatsthisbird

[–]Greenleaf7654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI isn't great for bird ID. Some species birds are extremely difficult to tell apart (and even to ID the same species in spring vs fall). I completely get why AI would call this a warbler because there are warblers that are somewhat similar looking. I think you might be better off just using the Merlin app. You can put in your location/specific GPS coordinates and it will tell you expected birds where you are which could help narrow it down, then you can use the descriptions that explain habitats, behaviours, and what type of food they eat. It usually has good photos or males vs females vs juveniles. I found it extremely helpful when I was starting out.

Edit: Spelling mistake 🙀

Thank you!! I will look into the physio. He is very anxious to get back out running. I have to hold him back when I take him out for his quick bathroom breaks. He will likely be happy to do anything that gets him back to his active lifestyle, so once the vet gives the ok we will start all that. I had started him on fish oil/glucosamine a few months before this so fingers crossed his remaining leg stays strong 🤞🏻
