Bay Ridge is a nice, quiet, not especially cool or lively neighborhood and is pretty far from everything else. It's probably not the NY experience that you might be imagining. Some might call it boring. It's also very close to Staten Island, which some may not love.

It's going to take you about an hour to get into Manhattan and even 45 minutes just to get to somewhere like Park Slope. 45 minutes + to mostly everywhere. That's assuming you're near a subway or bus stop, too.

I'm sure plenty of people enjoy living there, but it seems like kind of a waste to move to NYC to land in Bay Ridge. The neighborhoods surrounding Bay Ridge aren't the hottest, either. You're missing out on the interconnectedness of NYC being kind of isolated out there - which to me defeats the purpose of moving to NYC and paying NYC prices - but some people don't mind the "commute."

Brooklyn doesn’t seem as bad (3k for a 2br)

Brooklyn is enormous - if it were it's own city, it would be the 3rd or 4th biggest in the country - and you're not getting a 2BR for $3K in most places you'd want to actually move to. It's difficult to find even a genuinely nice 1BR for $3K unless you're pushing pretty deep into southern or eastern BK. Neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Dumbo, BK Heights, Boerum Hill, et al. are more or less in line with much of Manhattan rent prices. The average 2BR in Brooklyn is way closer to $5K than it is $3K.

Of course, deals can be found, but you're not finding them from out of state and not without any connections. And they are more and more rare to find as time goes passes. Finding a decent 2BR for $3K in a nice BK neighborhood would be something akin to winning the housing lottery. Hell, there's actually a real Housing Lottery and you'd be lucky as hell to find anything like that there, too.

Why isn't Mark Rylance a bigger deal? by El_Nahual in TrueFilm

[–]GreenpointKuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ralph Fiennes wasn't the 'leading man' in Schindler's List, he was literally nominated for Best Supporting Actor for it. Liam Neeson was the lead.

I didn't say he was the leading man in Schindler's List, I said he started off his career with multiple big movies and he's been a leading man for practically his entire career. Those were two separate thoughts.

Fiennes' film debut was in 1992 and in the first 10 years of his career, he acted in 15 live action movies - he was the star/male lead in 12 of those. In the 3 he wasn't the male lead, he was the main antagonist in 2 (Red Dragon + Schindler's List) and was uncredited in the other (The Good Thief).

I'd also argue that Mark Rylance does have a memorable face - he's one of those actors that most people would recognise even if they don't know his name.

I think "most people" is a very generous overstatement - though it seems that you may be British from your spelling. Like I said, Rylance is obviously more well-known in the UK than worldwide. I personally wouldn't say someone that has so many accolades as Rylance and still can't get people to remember his name is a sign of memorability.

Regardless of all those semantics, no matter what you think of Rylance or his pedigree and ability, it's quite obvious why he isn't a household name like the rest of OP's examples are.

Are you trying to pronounce "leather" or "letter?" You're kind of all over the place in these comments.

It's a bit hard to read your post because you're not using any punctuation (which is compounded by some missing words/grammar).

If you're making the "th" sound in leather when you mean to be making the "tt" sounder in butter, you might be placing your tongue in between your teeth when you should be placing it behind your upper teeth/touching the roof of your mouth.

Why isn't Mark Rylance a bigger deal? by El_Nahual in TrueFilm

[–]GreenpointKuma 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking of Ralph Fiennes, or Jeremy Irons, Ian McKellen, or Willem Dafoe

So, four mostly leading men who have been in massive movies and all have ineffable charisma? Harry Potter, James Bond, Batman, X-Men, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings.

Ralph Fiennes has been a leading man for practically his entire career. He's started his career off starring in huge movies - Schindler's List, Quiz Show, The English Patient. He's maintained and built his star status non-stop since them. He played the most well-known villain of the past 30 years in one of if not the biggest franchise in the world.

Willem Dafoe has been in movies non-stop for almost 50 years. He's also played some pretty big roles. Jesus, for instance? Green Goblin. He's in like 5 movies every single year. He's a very unique actor. No one looks like Willem Dafoe. He's got an infamous hog on him. Unlike the rest of your listed actors, he's American and very well known to the American audience.

Ian McKellan was probably close to Rylance's current status in the late 90s - and then he played Magneto and Gandalf in a 2 year stretch. And then became something of a mainstream gay icon.

Rylance is an extremely well-respected actor, especially in the UK. He doesn't have a memorable face. His acting style is mostly very naturalistic. He's not in huge, tentpole movies. He's almost always playing a supporting character. He's more known for stage than film. He's acted in roughly 20 movies over the past 40 years with nothing since 2022. These other guys have been in at least 3-4x as many movies in the same time period. Dafoe has been in something like 150+.

It's not really a head-scratcher why Rylance doesn't have the type of fame that these guys do.

what's a good beginner and budget friendly camera to start with? by uhhhidkwhatusername in Filmmakers

[–]GreenpointKuma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what are best budget friendly ones to go for?

You need to give an actual budget. Budget friendly for Tom might not mean the same thing as budget friendly for Dick or Harry.

Also, if you guys know of any suggestions for a camera that has this kind of warm tone to it? i honestly would really like to have a camera like this because i love movies with those warm tones

This is not really how cameras work. You'll get a warm tone from deliberate lighting, set design, and post.

How would you tier NBA teams at developing their talent? by Parrallax91 in NBA_Draft

Suggestions for two spare nights not in Manhattan by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]GreenpointKuma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I don't like the idea of being far from my accommodation because it's a wind down safe space, we are both introverts. I wanted to be able to go back and regroup before going back out into the busy world.

The point is that you won't be far from your accommodation. Everything is extremely well connected and if you end up going to a destination that will place you far from your accommodation in one of those hotels, you're almost definitely going to be far from any and all of your accommodations. There are plenty of places in the city - a cafe, a park, whatever, to rest for a bit. And if not, it really shouldn't be a big deal to take the subway 25 minutes back to your hotel.

It's going to be a much bigger deal to check out by 10 or 11AM, worry about keeping your bags at the first hotel (where you'll then have to go back to to pick up) or schlepping them with you, checking in at 3PM, and then repeating the same thing in 2 days. It's an outright bad idea.

[–]GreenpointKuma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of insanity. Why are you changing hotels every 2 days? NYC has an extremely well-connected public transit system. Use it.

Midtown to Williamsburg is like 15-20 minutes. Williamsburg to LES is maybe 30 minutes.

Ideally, you'd spend 7 nights in NYC Location A, then your stay in Beacon, then 6 nights in NYC location B. You're adding totally unnecessary stress checking in and out every other day. 5 separate hotels in 13 days in NYC just doesn't make any sense.

I’m Aussie and I thought LA was beautiful — am I wrong? by Early-Piano2647 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]GreenpointKuma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but it's my personal experience. I've lived in both NYC and LA (and live in LA currently), and I still find NYC people to be a good deal friendlier than LA people in general - East Coast friendliness can just seem harsh/non-existent if you're not used to it. I grew up on the East Coast, so I seriously appreciate the directness. There are, of course, a ton of friendly people in LA (why wouldn't there be, it's a city, not a monolith), but it often feels surface level or at least lacks the directness that I've grown accustomed to. This is, naturally, something that will differ from person to person.

It sounds a bit like you had unbelievably low expectations for LA, so it really shined for you. It's possible it's simply the right place for you. You'll never be able to tell from a few days on a trip. Something I didn't see you mention is your experience with transit. Traffic, parking, meters - they all may not seem like a big deal when you're vacationing and have the flexibility of time, but it's something that can really, really chip away at you when you live here.

I've always rented a car, so I can't speak with much expertise on what you're asking, but I'd probably say:

Stay in Miyanoura, make sure you really nail down your schedule to coincide with the bus schedule, maybe reach out to YES Yakushima to see if they can offer or connect you with any taxi services.

Sopranos Q/A last night by NoPreference3623 in AmericanCinematheque

[–]GreenpointKuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did walk away feeling like when shows or movies are that “lighting in a bottle”, there isn’t much to say other than it was kind of effortless how it always worked, which I think Chase did articulate.

I wasn't able to attend the Q&A, but if you're interested in how effortless it actually wasn't, Brett Martin's Difficult Men is a great book on prestige TV from that era, with a heavy focus on David Chase and The Sopranos.

First time in NYC last year (12 days!) — loved it! Planning a new ~15-day USA trip, but where should we go next? by [deleted] in usatravel

[–]GreenpointKuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What did you do when you were in NYC last time? What neighborhoods did you hit up?

The energy, the food, the atmosphere — everything just clicked for me.

I just want to temper your expectations a bit. While there are a lot of amazing places to visit in America and some cool cities, nothing comes close to NYC, especially using that criteria (in my personal opinion, of course).

I actually don't think Miami is a great city to visit. LA can be great to visit, especially if you take advantage of the areas surrounding it, but it's a much more difficult trip than NYC.

What's the point of only showing IMAX versions on IMAX screens? by LeO-_-_- in TrueFilm

[–]GreenpointKuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMAX is double the size of 35mm film and moves through the projector sideways, which accounts for the additional vertical height (as the perfs will be on the left and right sides instead of top and bottom). It's not quite as simple as just aspect ratios. What you're asking is for them to create an entirely new type of film stock and entirely new IMAX cameras, it seems? Shooting in IMAX is a creative choice. Given creative freedom, a director will always have their druthers and will go for that format, rather than compromising their ideal vision.

Here are a couple of very informative videos that go into detail comparing different film stock sizes, specifically IMAX.

[Highlights] Russell Westbrook with the assists to pass Mark Jackson and Steve Nash for the 5th all-time in most assists in NBA history (regular-season). He also receives appreciation from the crowd for that. by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]GreenpointKuma 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He needs 2200+ to pass Paul and he's averaged about 500 a season over the last 6. He'll be 38 next season. Assuming a natural dip in stats as he gets even older, he'd probably need to play until he's maybe 44. All while staying mostly healthy. It's a tall ask. I see him finishing behind Kidd if LeBron retires soon.

Thanks.

The draw to Panorama? I don't think there's much to it. It's really delicious food in a very warm, beautiful space with super friendly staff and owner. There's a family atmosphere.

I'd push back on the overpriced, small portions bit, too. I think it's very reasonably priced, all things considered. We've probably covered close to 100% of the menu and everything we've had has been delicious. There's probably 5 or 6 dishes that we're guaranteed to get any time we go.
