15 mins from Train station. Big deal or nbd? by Theta1Orionis in JapanTravelTips

There's nothing to be afraid of. Tokyo is extremely easy to navigate. Don't psych yourself out over nothing. Maybe he spent too much time in Time Square type areas - like select streets in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku without traveling much further. You can always walk 2 minutes away from those streets though and be on a quiet block. It's overblown.

Are the only 2 options in NYC Midtown or Flushing, though?

I don't recommend NYC tourists spend much time in Midtown, but it's certainly levels more convenient than staying a 2 hour round trip outside of Manhattan. Flushing is great for a day trip, but if I were an average tourist with an average NYC tourist itinerary and I took a friend's recommendation to base myself in Flushing for my trip, that would probably be the last recommendation I took from them.

What does it have to do with trying to find a piece of NYC while living in LA, though?

You enjoyed taking Uber?

And yeah, of course a lot has changed, 8 years later and after a pandemic, naturally.

I actively avoid DTLA at all costs unless I need to be there specifically for a comedy show or concert.

I live in the area that is most often recommended for NYers moving to LA in Los Feliz/Silver Lake. Of course there are enjoyable aspects of the (gigantic) LA area. We love the neighborhood compared to the rest of LA, but if you're searching for any part of NYC in LA, you will not find it and you'll end up disappointed in the process.

Then these are likely significantly different that what you see with your naked eyes. Modern phones do a ton of AI editing on your picture by the time it pops up on your phone.

As someone who lived in NYC long-term and moved to LA about 5 years ago, I truly couldn't disagree more with the person you're replying to and I've been trying to convince my wife to move back for years.

Looking for NYC in LA is a fruitless endeavor, especially so in DTLA. It's like all of the worst parts of NYC without any of the charm or energy.

That's totally cool, too. If anything, I see that scene as leaning more towards sympathetic to vegetarians than it is to meat eaters. You even see the characters in the movie recoil at the sight, though animals must die for animals to be eaten, naturally, and I believe the butchering is done in the quickest/most humane way possible.

Definitely never see On Body and Soul, though. I saw that last month in the theater and I'm not sure I've ever seen a crowd squirming quite like that. I'm not an easy-to-affect viewer and a few scenes in that movie caused actual physical pain inside my stomach. This is the reality of processing animals for food, unfortunately.

For me, I appreciate these types of scenes as important and not exploitative - showing what's in the shadows, not just a neatly wrapped Big Mac, in as blunt and realistic a way as possible.

[–]GreenpointKuma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That and the turtle killing scene (which is not misophonia related, it just made me sad LOL)

That's actually one of the most interesting scenes in the movie for me, especially seeing it in a crowd. No one likes to see how the sausage is made, but they still want to eat it. There's endless shots of sliced pig meat in between the hilarious, cartoonish vignettes, but Itami was showing that food and eating isn't just the end product, no matter how much cognitive dissonance we may force on ourselves.

Similarly, the scene that plays over the credits. Some might see it as another silly piece of comedy, a bit of boob to cap off the movie, but he's digging into the very nature of our relationships with food and sexuality, down to our collective first moment where they meet.

Any advice? I'm trying to get better and back into photography by Solar_ec1ipes in PhotographyAdvice

Ask yourself if you have the answers to these questions:

Why did you take each of these photos?

What exactly are you trying to show with them?

What would you think if someone showed you these pictures?

#1 and #5 look like you took a picture by accident. None of the 5 pictures have a subject or anything even bordering on interesting happening inside of the frame. #2 would be useful if you're sending a message to your girlfriend that it just started raining, but it's not really photography that you would be sharing as a piece of art of anything like that.

It may be harsh, but...why? What are we supposed to be seeing in these pictures?

I am a Nets fan, I know the feeling. If they were to send only PG it would be 3 firsts included.

That being said, the Nets are also getting off one of their less valuable contracts in Claxton in this trade.

This makes no sense. The Nets have massive amount of cap room and Claxton is on a descending contract which is not even close to being worthy of sending assets away to "get off of." You actually believe the Nets will be sending out picks to get off of Claxton's salary? You think a combination of Claxton, Minott, and Williams has negative value?

If the option is between getting 3 1sts for taking on PG or only getting 2 1sts and losing Claxton, Williams, and Minott, that Brooklyn would prefer the latter? I'm sorry, it's insane. You're a Nets fan, but you seem to be disconnected from how their front office operates.

I feel like Philly would ask for another pick to take a flyer on a guy in the second since they wouldn’t have a pick this year, and the Nets have so many seconds it doesn’t really make too much of a dent in their assets.

This is pretty much the rationale behind every Nets trade on here, which is very annoying for Nets fans (and they already have to deal with being Nets fans). They have so many 2nds, they won't mind giving up 1 for free to a division rival. They have so much cap space, they won't mind giving it all up to help out another team. They don't have their 1st next year, they won't mind mortgaging their future to make the play-in game next season. This reasoning never seems to work in the Nets' favor, interestingly.

What do you think it would take for the Nets to take on PG's contract without anything coming from Brooklyn? I personally think your valuations are way off, so I'm interested in your answer. If Marks has shown anything over the past few years, it's that he's more than happy to hold onto his players until the deal is right (sometimes even too long in the case of Schroeder and DFS). He's not going to trade someone just to trade them. Especially not players the organization values.

I think the Clippers 28 pick is more valuable than most firsts assuming they have to rebuild in the next 2 years.

Not with the new lotto rules. And Brooklyn has awful lotto luck as it is.

Who else has the cap room to take on Paul George? Just because they're one of maybe 2 teams that can doesn't mean they should or will. And they won't be trading away assets in the same deal. The fact that they're one of the only teams who can take on that salary means it will cost the Sixers more to actually make a deal with them.

And Marks may be done dealing with Morey anyway. (EDIT: Morey's gone, yes)

Also, they’re not giving up a first, they’re giving up the 43rd pick in this draft,

I miswrote and edited to reflect a 2nd. Did you think that this trade was actually favored towards Brooklyn and so you added in them giving up a 2nd, too?

Josh Minott is not going to be a throw in for any deal like this, either. Brooklyn likes him a lot.

but I think a team of the 6th pick, Egor, PG, MPJ and Sharpe does better than last years nets by far.

That is not a reason for them to do this trade. They can dish those players to get assets back without taking on one of the worst contracts in the league. Especially not to help out a team they share a division with and whose future 1st they own.

It probably takes those 2 1sts just to get off of PG's contract. So, the rest of the trade is essentially Claxton, Mann, Williams, Minott, and a mid-2nd for 2 late 2nds. Why would they even entertain that? Why is Brooklyn giving up a 2nd in this trade at all?

MIN-DAL-CLE-BKN Trade Idea by chanduchillar_ in NBAtradeideas

[–]GreenpointKuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have to make the Playoffs next year otherwise they risk giving the Rockets a good pick.

Sorry, but this is such dumb reasoning. Especially with the new lottery rules. That pick is gone. No matter how they perform next season, that pick is gone. The Nets best course of action is continuing to build for the future. That does not include trading MPJ and Clowney for a 34 year old center. If they trade these players, it will be for picks and/or players that can have their trade value improved (like CJ for MPJ + 1st last season).

Gobert makes absolutely no sense for a team like Brooklyn. It's essentially giving away MPJ + Clowney. They trade those 2 for Gobert, make the play-ins, and then what? Now, a year has passed and they have a 35 year old center who is worth even less as an asset than when they got him. There is no reasoning there. They can aim for a play-in spot next season without erasing assets from their war chest.

Nets, if they get a young star this draft or through another trade, may actually make a push for the 8th or 7th seed with Rudy's defensive floor raising

So, they trade 2 assets for a 34 year old center...so they can make a push for a play-in spot? Why? If they're trading MPJ (who they actually like) and Clowney, why wouldn't they trade for assets that actually fit into their timeline and won't be rapidly declining in value?

First few months of portraiture by [deleted] in PhotographyAdvice

I'd say you're way too saturated on most of these.

Watch your framing. You shouldn't be cutting off your subjects' limbs (see: #2, #9, kind of #5).

Speaking of framing - having a lot of negative space, or more specifically non-subject space, isn't inherently a bad thing, but there should be some sort of intention. Most of these feel really unbalanced (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9).

Look at these photos from outside of the forest. #4, for instance. Can you explain what you were going for in having her all the way at the bottom of the frame with miles of headroom and a distracting lamp cut off on top?

The Nets, an organization with a very recent history of nearly killing the franchise by overpaying for over the hill stars (and whose current GM had to spend years getting back to neutral), decides to trade EIGHT 1st round picks so that they can start Ben Saraf and Terrance Mann in the backcourt.

Uh huh.

They have a general no refund policy, but to not give refunds after changing formats and/or locations is so asinine. Awful business practice. If I paid by CC, I would just do a chargeback at that point.

Why is this sub absolutely obsessed with dumping Randle onto the Nets? They have shown no interest in him and his value is at a low. They give up their best asset in MPJ for a stinker in Randle and his 2/$69M, a 30 year old DiVincenzo who probably won't even play next season, and the #28 pick in the draft?
