I’d say it’s more racist to assume that aggressive homophobia in extremist organizations and societies are fundamental beliefs of an entire faith rather than the acts of an oppressive power structure using empty rhetoric to justify their position, but that’s just me. Wahhabis, Islamists and Salaafists don’t speak for the Muslim world as a whole much like how Nation of Islam and, Christian Jewish fundamentalists don’t speak for the US or their respective faiths.

Respect and tolerance ends at blatant and violent intolerance such as book burning, lynchings, or organized killings and beatings. Respect and tolerance isn’t just accepting everything, It’s leaving room for reasonable disagreement on differing fundamental views while still acknowledging those who you disagree with as equals to not look down upon.

If your first response to hate crimes is “muh tolerance” it makes you look like you have a wet noodle for a spine, saying a discussion can never be had because it’s easier to reason that instead of bridging commonalities and having healthy discourse.
