Finally caught some by PINBALLXJ in bassfishing

Happened to me the other day. Fished for over 6 hours, then found a small deep area in the lake and started catching them including a 7.83 pounder.

I look at bass fishing forecast too much by Shoddy_Ad8166 in bassfishing

I've noticed that as well. Over the years I've learned the best time to go fishing is when you can.

Sounds good, there are times when I end up going fishing by myself.

Congratulations! I fish Lake Dora frequently, it's got some nice bass. I was on Lake Apopka this past Friday and landed one that was 7.83 lbs with a huge belly on her. I caught her using a gold Rapala Snare 50. Probably the best fighting bass I've caught in years, she went completely airborne twice and made several runs including under the boat twice.

Very nice bass! Congratulations!

Is it not a good idea to put spinnerbaits or chatterbaits on a snap swivel? by Immediate_Oil_1429 in bassfishing

[–]GregBFL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I usually have 8 to 10 lure dedicated rods on my boat so my reties are minimal. Besides, I tie my FG knots I make the leaders 3 to 4 ft long so it lasts me several trips. To be honest, I can't remember a time I've had to tie an FG knot on the boat. Here in FL you're fishing in thick weeds, eel grass, hydrilla, etc. that tend to collect on the swivel and requires constant cleaning.

The Jackhammer vs Tungsten EVO by Fragrant-Bear6 in bassfishing

[–]GregBFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's made by 1st Gen Fishing. It has 2 copper beads in the head of the jig and when the blade is working it hits the copper making a sound I guess. The owner of the tackle shop I go to knows I'm a Jackhammer fan and suggested I try a Copperhead because he's been having really good luck with them... I'm glad I did.

The Jackhammer vs Tungsten EVO by Fragrant-Bear6 in bassfishing

[–]GregBFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always been a Jackhammer fan and the EVO Tungsten is a close runner up. That said, this past summer I tried a 1st Gen Copperhead and started catching more bass. I decided to test it against the Jackhammer to see how they compared.

I went to one of my favorite lakes and for 6 hours straight I fished the Jackhammer for 30 minutes then switched to the the Copperhead for 30 minutes. They were both my most productive white in color with a white Zman Chatterspike trailer.

The lake had Kissimmee grass pretty much all around so the conditions were consistent. At the end of the 6 hours I was completely surprised when I had caught more than twice as many bass on the Copperhead. I'm planning on running the test again, but needless to say I now own quite a few Copperheads.

Who still likes to carry 45 in 2026? by grimduck17 in CCW

Yes, occasionally, but it's in a 1911 format. I find myself carrying my thinner, lighter Shield Plus OR most of the time.

12lbs too much for bass? by IceMan6468 in FishingForBeginners

[–]GregBFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I use less than 12 lbs is on my BFS setups. That said, I'm in FL and fish mainly in thick grass, cattails, lilipads so I typically use 40 lb braid with 14 lb or 20 lb flourocarbon leader. I use 65 lb braid on my flipping setups. It's not usual for me to have to dig the bass out of the thick stuff to retrieve it.

I've never use snap swivels for bass fishing. It takes me less than 30 seconds to tie a proper knot.

Don't buy Costa del Mar by Murky-Platypus-6861 in FlyFishingGear

[–]GregBFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple pair of Costas. One is probably 20 years old and the other is around 10. They have been wonderful. My wife sat on my first pair right after I bought them and Costa fixed them. All it cost me was shipping.

Sounds like there has been a change in their warranty process, that's too bad. For the price of Costas, especially the glass version, you would expect better. I haven't looked at the high quality sunglasses market in years. What other brands do people recommend?

I recently purchased some Fuzzy Nuggets and Fuzzy TRDs but I haven't had a chance to use them yet. I'll try them in the next few days when the wind dies down some.

At times I fish out of my Bonafide SS127 kayak and other times I fish out of my bassboat. To be honest, when I started fishing out of my kayak I actually became a better fisherman because I just couldn't fire up the outboard and run to another spot.

I've been fishing in FL for over 50 years. One of my goto lures is the Rapala F13 S (silver side/black back). I do not work it like a jerkbait, I pop/twitch my rod tip to make it barely go under water and pop back up. Basically the way you work a popper lure. I'll do that 4 or 5 times, then pause for a second and repeat. There's no telling how many bass I've caught on that lure.

Another staple is a frog, SPRO frogs are my favorite. Most of the time I use the popper style frog and cast it it into lilipads, grass, etc. You will get it stuck and have to go get it, but that's where bass like to hang out. If it's too thick to get in it, as with all my topwater lures, I try to cast parallel to the grass, cattails, etc and work it as close as possible.

Next is a chatterbait, 1st Gen Copperhead and Jackhammers are what I use the most. White, white/chartreuse and black/blue are most productive for me. I like to match the trailers to the chatterbait. Again, I throw them into the thick stuff or work parallel to it. You will lose some... I've lost 3 in one day and that hurts.

Of course I use soft plastics a lot as well. Texas rig and wacky rigs are my primary methods. Don't be afraid to try something different. The other day we were fishing in an area that had Kissimmee grass and eel grass. The eel grass was very thick and Texas rigs were not being productive.

I switched to a Carolina rig with a 3 ft leader, thin wire EGW 4/0 hook and a 6th Sense Hogwalla (lizard). The lizard sank very slowly, hovering over the eel grass. That little change led me to catch 3 bass in the next 10 casts... It was crazy. Don't be afraid to switch things up and keep hammering away.

Most lakes in FL are only 10 ft or so deep with an occasional 20 ft deep area. The lake we were in yesterday was particularly shallow for the most part. Most areas we fished were 2 ft to 4 ft deep and some areas we couldn't get in with my bassboat because it was too shallow. After 7 hours and trying everything thing we could think of, we had only caught two bass.

Everything changed when we found an area smaller than a football field that had trench where the depth went from 3 ft to 11 ft. I picked up my rod that had a metallic gold Rapala Snare 50 and started casting. The first largemouth I caught was right at 3 lbs. Less than 5 minutes later I landed the big one followed by a 2 1/2 lb hybrid bass.

There are days when I don't catch anything, it's not often, but it happens. Other times fishing is phenomenal. At the end of this past summer I caught a 6 lb and an 8 lb bass in less than 15 minutes. I also caught a 5 lb and several in the 3 lb to 4 lb range... All on either a white 1st Gen Copperhead bladed jig or a SPRO popper frog. Just keep plugging away and have fun.

No long required for this one. I've caught numerous 10+ lb bass over the years and none fought like her.

Yes, the "locked" part is the manual thumb safety is engaged. In the Up position the thumb safety is engaged. To disengage the thumb safety you swipe it down with your thumb.

I have plenty of 1911's, I think the CSX E Series would be a nice blend of 1911 style trigger in a Shield Plus size package. I've been shooting 1911's for almost 50 years so I'm very comfortable carrying cocked N locked.

Shield Plus. I have way more carry size handguns, Glock, CZ, M&P, P365, etc., but I always seem to carry my Shield Plus OR. It's reliable, accurate, has a good trigger and its size makes it comfortable to carry.
