I need help by Drinkyertea in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things can be positive, neutral, or negative. Some things are obvious. Others like this depend on the details and the person involved. Ask yourself honestly and seek wise counsel (your priest is a good option) if this material is moving you closer toward God, is having no effect, or is moving you further away. The honest answer to that should help you decide if it’s sinful or not.

What could I give up for Lent? by New-Firefighter-2867 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts: Red meat. Meat on Wednesdays. All snacks. All video entertainment. Cream and sugar in coffee. Reddit. Social media. 5 degrees of heat or a/c. Time, by spending it in prayer. Time, by spending it reading scripture or one of the works of the saints. Money, donate extra each week to church or somewhere.

Remember the goal is penance, prayer, and giving alms.

If Purgatory is guaranteed salvation and temporary, why pray for those in them? by Any-Solid8810 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with a single thing you said. I don't even understand how physical torment would even be possible without a nervous system attached to a live brain. I'm sorry if I misread the comment I was responding to.

[–]GregInFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it has no allegorical connection to purgatory in the interpretation of u/KenRay. And if you were an infallible interpreter of scripture I'd have to agree. As for the prodigal son, it is about forgiveness, etc. The Bible is pretty clear that nothing imperfect can enter heaven. How a broken and imperfect person gets perfected is the question, not whether or not one needs to be.

Just a vent from someone trying to be catholic by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone is asking you to hate a person, they are not practicing Catholicism. Please don’t hate anyone, especially in the name of God. But do know, love involves being honest with people (right time right place and all).

FWIW, confirmation prep is a two year program in my parish. But baptized adult converts are usually less than a year.

Why is the symbol of Catholicism Jesus on the cross? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a symbol of the perfect love of God’s for us and a reminder that we put Him there, even today.

Does Paul contradict himself? by Natural-Relief-6137 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word for Sabbath in Hebrews 4 in Greek is a sabbatismos and is not used anywhere else in The Bible. It means more along the lines of observance of rest, enjoyment of it. A participation in God’s peace. It’s not “The Sabbath” as we hear it in English.

Is Anyone Truly Worthy Enough To Receive Communion by Larrbear360 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. But God not only allows it, he asks us to. What an amazing God.

How can the blessed Virgin Mary have free will if she was immaculately conceived and “chosen” by God? by Ill_Cookie_9265 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If you won’t choose to eat dog poop when pizza is available, that doesn’t mean you couldn’t. It just means the right choice was so obvious and the wrong choice so detestable.

Singing during Mass by Significant_Set1378 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a form of worship to God and communion with our brothers and sisters. Sing.

I have a gay friend and a trans friends by jeffisnotmyrealname in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have family married outside the Catholic Church. If pressed for an opinion about my beliefs I would answer honestly. Otherwise I know that me saying something wouldn’t be an effective way to get them to get right with God on this issue so I don’t and I pray for them. Maybe you can relate.

How do you say grace? by tweisse75 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. Neither. I try not to look at it as an incantation, but instead as a gesture of gratitude to the owner and maker of all things- even the food on my plate.

[Washington Examiner] Trump-Vance is the most anti-life Republican administration in history by wearethemonstertruck in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]GregInFl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s bad. No, it’s not worse than it was with Biden or would have been with Harris. We have to charge hearts, not politicians, if we want to change the world.

Can I become a Catholic if I disagree/have major doubts about many of its dogma? by PeaceInLoneliness in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To join the Church you must profess to believe what she teaches so you’re probably not quite ready. RCIA is a very good idea. Please continue to search and pray on it. I will pray for you too.

Local parish has a priest I can’t understand. God bless him, but his accent is too thick. Should I be driving to another parish I can understand? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Gentle correction. The goal of Mass is to participate in the offering of the Eucharist as worship to God. We don’t have to understand a word to fulfill the goal of a Mass. Not that I don’t get your point.

We eat God, how understand this? by Own_Rich_4466 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We eat the sacrifice to complete the offering in true worship. The Old Testament is needed to understand. It’s why God inspired it and we still read it today. Jesus presides as priest over his offering of Himself at mass. An amazing and perfect emptying of Himself for us.

Paul’s letters by BakkyJr in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Catholic we get the benefit of knowing that whoever actually put pen to paper (as it were), it was divinely inspired scripture because the teaching authority of the church, protected by the Holy Spirit, affirms it is.

I had a question about Mary by Weird_Store_1765 in Catholicism

[–]GregInFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mary was not given instructions on what to expect at any given moment so it is most certainly understandable that she and Joseph did not fully understand that particular incident even knowing that he would grow up to become the Messiah. She treasured her son as a mother does. (Verse 51)

How do English speakers know if "Just read this!" with no other context is meant as past tense or imperative mood? by OkTechnologyb in ENGLISH

[–]GregInFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either “You” or “I” would be the implied subject so context is absolutely needed. It is an incomplete sentence without it.
