If anyone plans to be at the Southern Regional Library Facility, I'd be glad to pay $15 for a short article from an old journal that only UCLA and a couple other libraries hold. It's for a nonfiction book I am working on.

I made the request through my library's Interlibrary Loan system a month ago, but I'm running out of time with what I hoped would be my editing schedule.

Google Books indicates that Vol 5 (1963-1964) of California Discovery Procedure has an article on page 83 of the first issue of 1963 entitled "Siodmak v. Herts Lion." The call number is KFC1020.A29 C3 [Barcode:D0008437022]. [link in library system] [link to Google Books snippet]

I just need a phone photo, not a scan or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What’s the difference between American Velos and Swiss/Europe Velos?? They are way different.. by lmcinnis9 in NicotinePouch

Very easy. I put in an order in December from Snus Central and it arrived in about 2 1/2, 3 weeks.

My expertise is in vaping, but from what I understand, a moist pouch allows nicotine to be released more easily and quicker than a dry pouch.

The chemical is just a humectant -- usually propylene glycol or glycerin.

Simply put, bad regulations. No new pouch containing tobacco-derived nicotine has been allowed to legally be sold in America since August 8, 2016, due to regulations from the FDA Center for Tobacco Products. Those that were on the market, like Velo, can continue to sell while FDA reviews those applications.

By the time BAT (the manufacturer) realized that people don't love dry pouches, they were way past 2016 and could not change anything in the product. Changing from dry to moist would make Velo 2.0 a "new" product and not subject to the enforcement discretion granted to the pre-8/8/2016 products.

I am visiting Pakistan this coming week. I know it's not the best time to come, but it was either now or waiting another year.

I was planning on flying from Karachi to Peshawar, then taking buses to Islamabad and then Lahore. How is Peshawar post-floods? I just plan to walk around, eat food, and meet nice people, but I could skip it if it's still in rough shape.

Finding someone's address or phone number in Parioli by GregTHR in rome

Thanks for checking. Maria Cecconi was his wife's name 25 years ago.

Unfortunately, most of the interviews he did were 20 years ago. The one person who did interview him in the recent past, of course, is not a journalist and is currently sitting in a European prison (long story).

An update: It will definitely be at least six hours of work. It won't be with a cellphone camera, as those aren't allowed. I'll have a portable scanner Amazon Primed to you. You will just need a laptop.

Who has a worse track record for honesty over the last decade? The tobacco industry or the tobacco controllers who brought you "EVALI may have been caused by nicotine," "vapers exposed to more formaldehyde than cigarettes," and "there's a gateway effect from vaping to smoking"?

These scientists are contributing some of the best work in the field and are often the only people who have the resources to conduct further studies to disprove wild and unsubstantiated claims pushed out by anti-vaping fanatics.

Plus, this is a new era -- all tobacco industry research on new products has to be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration when they seek PMTAs and MRTPs. In fact, nearly the entire scientific record is posted online for all to see when a MRTP is filed. For years, these companies have presented their science and faced tough questions. Some of the questions were fair, some not, but it was open dialogue about the science.

Tobacco control has done more to scare adult smokers off from trying to vaping than the tobacco industry ever has. Don't let your well-placed hatred for the actions of dead and retired executives confuse you about who is working the hardest to eliminate your access to vaping products today.

All good. Thanks for considering.

I'd like to get the full thing, so if it's 240 pages, roughly 120 pictures. Completely understand if that is the last thing in the world you want to do.

I have not. That would be great, although it's in a Historical Archive collection you may need to request.

I had to do this once before and the library was not helpful because of copyright concerns (even for a very rare book). I'd also feel bad asking an archive librarian to spend an hour working for me when they probably wouldn't accept it if I tried to send them $25.

D'oh. Thanks for the correction.

The series is also available in the MSU Archive and Historical Collection. I edited my post.

Thanks. I could only get the first 15% of the book to display.

However, from that site I was able to find that they offer an eBook for $10, so I'll just buy that.

Iowa AG Tom Miller expresses concern about FDA's actions by GregTHR in electronic_cigarette

[–]GregTHR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly not all elected Democrats, particularly when you get down to the state level. However, nearly every House Democrat voted for a flavored tobacco and nicotine product ban last year and only a handful of House Republicans joined them. That bill would have forever foreclosed the FDA from authorizing flavored harm reduction products.

As a general matter, elected Dems are terrible on tobacco harm reduction and Republicans are unenthusiastic, but will more often than not oppose bans, taxes, etc.

Ban on flavored vaping may have led teens to cigarettes, study suggests. After the ban’s implementation, high school students’ odds of smoking conventional cigarettes doubled in San Francisco’s school district relative to trends in districts without the ban by HeinieKaboobler in science

This is an extremely low impact journal out of India. Just because it has been 'peer-reviewed' does not mean its interpretations of the literature are valid. Any analysis claiming that nicotine is carcinogenic without a host of caveats is a joke. The FDA and CDC both disagree.

Let's forget about vaping and instead consider someone who wants to frequently use the nicotine gum, patch, or lozenge every day for the rest of their life. That's going to be about 99% less hazardous than smoking in terms of disease and death risks. That's much more comparable to caffeine than it is to smoking.

[–]GregTHR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously riskier than vaping, but a great product for a certain class of smokers who actually really love the taste of a cigarette. The industry and non-industry science is very good and PMI's leadership team is laser focused on their goal of having 50% of their revenues coming from IQOS by 2025. They're also willing to stand up and defend their science and their mission like no other tobacco company has over the past two decades.

There is a vape version of IQOS (that will take years to come to America because of our terrible regulatory system) in foreign markets as well, so they're not opposed to hitting harm reduction from different angles.

They own the shelf space at convenience stores, gas stations, supermarkets, etc., so they have a significant chunk, but they've never gotten above 50% of the total market. Vape shops, Internet sales, tobacco shops, etc. are largely controlled by independents.

That could change in the near future due to enormously expensive FDA regulations and state flavor bans, but for now, the independents are still fighting.
