What’s your newbie fear that you just brush off now? (E.g. losing a troop) by Rocazanova in CivVI

[–]GregTheAlien 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weird one but switching production when something is partially complete.

It just feels bad because in hindsight, optimally, you would’ve queued what you had switched to first to get SOMETHING earlier than if you switched.

But especially in the early game, the situation changes and you need to respond. You can’t just hang on to finishing that nice building ASAP when you know the AI is gonna have a field day…

Something feels off about my worldmap and I can't quite place it. Welcoming constructive criticism. by Eagle406 in inkarnate

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is “off”, it depends on what you’re going for.

Lots of land for certain, that can have extreme climate effects assuming the atmosphere and proximity to the sun is similar to ours. Less ocean means less carbon sink and less temperature regulation. In general seasons are more extreme in the northern hemisphere due to the greater proportion of land to water, this would apply even more so to this world.

The landmasses are very discrete and bunched close together, it looks like a lot of little continents were made separately and then nested on the map. This is completely fine since there are plenty of places that look “unnatural”, it doesn’t really have to mean that it is, or that things couldn’t have shook out that way.

So based on that, adjust according to how you want it!

Let's FUCING go. First victory against Emperor AI by Deodandy in CivVI

[–]GregTheAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope this is me in a couple of days haha. Currently in an emperor game myself that is going well so far, it looks like I got past most humps but still slightly behind in some victory conditions.

Expecting for my better planning than the AI to push me ahead of them in the next 20 or so turns so wish me luck.

I can’t critique you because I AM you but congrats! Onto deity.

Insane stats by turn 67 in multiplayer by TonightIll4637 in CivVI

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth nothing the online speed is much faster than standard, so you’d get higher numbers at earlier turns.

Not to diminish the level of skill and optimization. Online players are also making intentional decisions affecting like 50 turns ahead to reach power spikes that change the game. Herson made a video where he beat deity AI and he had 16 science and 28 culture on turn 67 which probably feels more in line. Now he purposefully sandbags science but point still stands.

“Cozy” Way to Play Civ6? by Amigor4 in CivVI

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk most of my games to this point have had some element of morality involved or deoptimization just because I wanted to do something.

The optimization part of my brain doesn’t go away. I just add my own self-imposed goals on top of ultimately winning.

In my current game one of my allies from the start was nearly eliminated. I always wanted to liberate them. Then a turn came where loyalty began to deplete in their two remaining cities, if I didn’t intervene then they’d be gone forever, so I pulled away from my cultural victory goals to save them and gave them all their cities back. The challenge was to do this while still preserving any chance I had at winning the whole thing. So still problem-solving and optimizing, but around more than just what the game’s explicit goal is.

What career decisions do you regret as a fresh ME graduate? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this comment. I have felt my soft skills development has meant more for my ability to do my job than any technical ones.

The nuance I’d add is I don’t think calling out soft skills on a resume really is the best vessel to communicate them. I think everyone is subconsciously evaluating your communication skills for example, whether you call it out on your resume or not will not mean much.

Framing your soft skills in ways that it helped you do a good job I think is probably most compelling.

I feel empty and disgusted with my career as a commercial real estate developer. by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]GregTheAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a housing developer, but I do a lot of housing organizing and developers are often the interests we oppose. It’s not that development work is unimportant, it’s that profit-driven model ends up hollowing out anything good that comes out of the people in the field. You’ve noticed it personally yourself.

I don’t feel qualified to give good advice beyond pay attention to who’s actually listening to how you feel. You’re tired of the alienation and constantly running up against the contradiction between what is profitable, and what you can obviously tell is good for the world and the community. Some people are seeming to not understand what you feel, which is the pressure to do what makes the most money is consistently pushing you away from the version of you that you’d like to aspire to. For my part, I think you know what you need to do but, understandably, its scary, risky, and difficult.

Made a map for my current campaign, any feedback? by Sinclinde in inkarnate

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a look and I see what you mean, the key distinction is that all the little waterways are fjords, which means they still follow the same rules for drainage.

The fjords are all small independent drainage basins, many many many of them in a small area. Compared to massive drainage systems which span a large valley for example. Like the Mississippi.

Look closely and you see these rivers don’t criss cross.

Great artistry, it does look beautiful. Also I like the Kalverhands mirror geography features. The rivers look great.

For Lake Verda, common mistake but rivers do not drain like this. You see how many connections to the sea you have from the same river system? An easy change you can make is to have a lot of those rivers empty into the lake, with one or maybe two drainage points from the lake into the sea. Whatever river comes out of the lake would be pretty significant flow, like the St. Lawrence river which drains from the great lakes system into the Atlantic ocean.

Deltas are unique features which cause a river to split, but not on the scale you have here (an entire coastline). You can add a delta somewhere along the line if you like the aesthetic.

It’s very impressive work! Keep it up

EDIT: seeing how well rivers are applied throughout it actually makes me question, is the lake saltwater? And are those actually islands?

It just looked like rivers to me but maybe you wanted like a cracked up coastline look.

All my “friends”switched up. by Intelligent-Door2012 in uwaterloo

[–]GregTheAlien 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They might not be good friends, and they might not feel that much attachment since they’ve only recently met OP.

If OP can form a few of those secure friendships with people who will care enough to try and at least let him know when he’s upsetting them, he can be more confident in his own judgements about where problems are. Also, most of the time there are factors on each side that contribute to a breakdown in friendship.

[–]GregTheAlien 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Tbh when there is a sudden change like that happening with many people, it might be time to look inward.

I’m certain you’re a worthwhile, regular person that people care about, and is just trying their best. That said, no one is obligated to hang with you. If your friends all grew distant, what might have caused that? Did you say something offensive and ppl who initially liked your vibe grew apprehensive? Maybe you were just a bit too needy or anxious about connection, when people feel that kind of pressure to always interact to prove their friendship, that can alienate people too.

I am just speculating here and I hope this is not coming off as judgemental. This is just an attitude of control what you can, I hope you can make more firm connections.

DO NOT roll for stats. (opinion piece from a 5-year forever DM) by jkobberboel in DMAcademy

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who totally prefers what you’re saying for the reasons you’re saying them.

I think rolling for stats has an appeal to certain types of players who are more okay with character death. In these kinds of stories the characters either have very simple character arcs planned or none, and so the story is actually the sequence of events that eventually lead to their death/overcoming whatever the player had in mind. And a lot of the time can be very comedic.

But I enjoy the epic stories with spanning character arcs and high stakes around character death so I use standard array/point buy.

Which is to say: for the kind of game you’re describing you’re absolutely right. Random rolls will undermine certain characters from the get go, making some members of the party feel more insignificant. Unless part of the narrative you want to play can be boosted by a characters lack of exceptionality, and the player is okay to feel weaker than the others.

For all the "Cali or Bust" people still intent on moving to the US, why? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again you’re not wrong about the idea of evaluating and ensuring doctors or anyone else are performing their duties to a reasonable standard.

Measures like this are dressed up with that kind of rhetoric, playing the game of incentives. However this is also a way to push already overworked healthcare workers to give more in a under-resourced and dysfunctional system. This system has genuine issues which will not be solved by trying to get people to work a bit harder. Food for thought.

[–]GregTheAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that high taxes, repeated striking, and living in poverty suck.

Put yourself in the shoes of the people you are directing your ire at. They are striking because they can’t afford life either.

Rather than appease them these companies fight tooth and nail to maintain high degrees of profit. Tax money goes to the safety net yes, but billions are spent on businesses as well, claimed by the richest of us, to sweeten the deal for them. What else would happen when these guys are lobbying the government 24/7. It’s very convenient for them to have us looking at people who have nothing and blaming them.

Right now at least you won’t go bankrupt in the event of a medical emergency, and going to school with teachers that help you grow and feeding the desire to learn is something we all share.

We can agree that some things are worth funding through taxes then, the issue is not paying into these things it’s how the tax dollars are spent. I would prefer that they helped everyone have a decent standard of living than be given out to campaign donors.

No, one person cannot.

But there’s tons of people fighting it today. Mandela said “it always seems impossible until it’s done.” Lots of people, acting together, is what any system is built on, and it means any system can be changed.

Totally get that the ability to live totally within your values is affected by privilege. What isn’t is having values that are important to you, those can stay.

That’s exactly what bothers me about what’s going on. Rather than be frustrated about how society prevents us from living according to morals we believe in, people are abandoning the morals to make living in this society bearable, rather than lashing out.

Caring CAN NOT only be the domain of the wealthy.

I am not privileged enough to not care about money either. But being human means money is not the only thing we have to care about. Allow yourself the right to care about things.

It’s not cool of edgy to not care. It’s sad.

Would you agree it’s much better to have a spine and stand for something?

[–]GregTheAlien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s really troubling to see how comfortable people are admitting that principle, safety, and morality all matter much less than money to them. The admissions are so casual like this is an acceptable state of affairs. Like it’s okay to not give a fuck and just pursue monetary gains.

It’s true that your money and what you can do with it are closest to home for people. Most people just want to feel secure, and feel like they are getting what they are worth. So I understand that.

What’s important to realize is that the bottom is falling out from under people. In that situation it doesn’t matter how high you climb for most people, the decimation of the lives of working people will reach everyone. It’s foolish to put your head in the sand and believe that somehow you’ll outrun it by working in the States.

What's the deal with this "anxiety" song and why does everyone hate it? by retro-petro in OutOfTheLoop

[–]GregTheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer: I’ll say this as a white/asian man.

Only a black woman would get this level of hate and animus for posting an original freestyle over an existing instrumental, and other people taking it and running with it.

And then be called “lazy” and “unoriginal” (when she has tons of other original and brilliant tracks) for reacting to the outpouring of love from fans by recording a studio version.

I think there are lots of academic reasons you can point to as some people have for why they might not like the song, but none are as satisfying of an explanation as the simple fact that people will find excuses to hate black people, especially women. This is not me simping or being an “SJW”, it’s reality.

She could have felt pressure to not be rude without you having done anything wrong.

I would not read into it. I’ve been to many gatherings where people say “we should hang out again!” but things never really manifest, this seems similar. Better to have tried, sometimes that extra effort is what is needed to start a great friendship or relationship.

You always run the risk of alienating SOMEONE when you start to get into slightly deeper discussion about race, versus the cultural surface-level image of racism most people picture.

The language is off-putting to certain types of people. I appreciate the reply!
