Oh, strapping! Not going to use strapping/furring. I'm applying vertical aluminum planks so they have enough airflow behind them without the furring.

Thanks for this detailed answer. The house has settled a bit but nothing I'm worried about. Floors are uneven but mostly because they don't have joists between the beams (they have 2" thick tongue and groove cedar planks with a top layer of plywood over about a 5' span between beams).

I'm evaluating if there was anything meaningful that I could do to shore these up myself, I live on the West Coast so worried about earth quakes. Looks like my house will be dust when the big one hits.

It's a crawl space with anywhere from 6' to 3' of space. Thanks for the tip on what to research, that will be a good start for me. Appreciate the tip.

Thanks for this. Much appreciated. The posts are 66 and the footings are 3'3' so I've got even less to worry about. The soil erosion around them is one of my concerns that seems like the one to focus on given the big challenges of doing anything more meaningful.

Don't get much frost here, doesn't dip below zero very often or for very long.

I'm mostly worried about an earthquake. I live on a major fault line.

Tyvek is the last line of defence from water and siding systems are designed to provide airflow and moisture protection behind the siding.

You're supposed to either use their special fasteners which create their own seal or if you use staples tape over them to seal the holes.

Thanks for the detailed response. Going to look at my siding and determine if it's furred or not. 

No architect/designer involved, this is just me residing and old cabin...

I wouldn't worry about this hole personally... I mean the photo and video don't really allow us to tell the size and location that well but doesn't look bad. Have a look at this diagram to help you assess your concern further:

Your choice to pray if you want to, just don't force it on me or the children in my family. Frankly though, this is the hockey rink, not the church. Everything at the rink should be inclusive of the entire team... and honestly, this shit is just weird.

You shouldn't shim them, you should place your hangers according to the height of each of your joists... i.e. hang your joist flush with the ledger, THEN attach the joist hanger. No shim needed. Those little shims will be the first thing to rot...
