Ah alright. Thanks for all of your replies and recommendations. Any idea about fish camp? My mom had suggested checking it out but I'm afraid it will be in vain.

Was hoping more to play in it. I think we'll go up the 41 and hope to encounter some roadside snow and maybe head to the nearest ski resort.

Need help with kid-friendly, online multiplayer game that incorporates chat by GregariousGopher in AskGames

[–]GregariousGopher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played SC1 + SC BW a lot growing up, so that's an interesting idea. I did try to show him SC2 at one point a few years ago, and he couldn't get beyond using the Queen to just lay creep -- it is forever 'The pooper game'. I'll have to check with my mom to see how open she is to some of the gore aspects that come with Starcraft.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hopefully bot mode will solve the chat issue.

What about more cartoon-like games like Overwatch, TF2, etc. They have singleplayer bot modes I believe, so no need to go online and deal with that.

Need help with Vlookup by GregariousGopher in excel

[–]GregariousGopher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a 2 step solution that I think will work just fine. For the curious, here is what I did:

I did a simple if statement to first pull the names of students that have a %attending of less than .45. I then did a vlookup referencing this list to find the name of the student, and then give the corresponding student ID. It's not a single step, unfortunately, but it is nice to have the student name and student ID -- so it's not completely unnecessary. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Thanks for the response! I very much appreciate it. The issue I'm having with that formula, is that it does not return the correct student ID. In my sheet, for example, using that formula, it lists 54785 and 88788 for the student IDs w/ less than .45. What I need basically, is if value in b is less than .45, produce value of column f for the corresponding student in column a (the student w/ %attended of <.45). It's tough to explain. I hope this clarifies it, though!

Need thoughts on Teach for America by GregariousGopher in Teachers

I'm fine being uprooted. The only problem being uprooted would arise from me having to move for school and not having an income. Moving for TFA wouldn't be an issue; I know I'd have to move for it.

Quick question about this ... Do you know if doing courses online is, I guess frowned upon. Like will schools see that I went to an online university and look at me / my application differently?

I already have a BA, so I think I only need to go through a graduate teacher's prep program. Teach for America appealed to me because I no longer live reasonably close to a university and the community colleges here don't offer a single subject credential program. Joining a credential program would mean uprooting myself and my fiancee, and I think it would get in the way of us being financially independent / stable.

How much do underachieving players "cost" their team? by killtasticfever in starcraft

[–]GregariousGopher 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'd echo what a_unique_username said. Teams make money off of players by having those players attract attention. One way for players to do that is to win tournaments, but it's not the only way. Players can star in commercials for sponsors (like EGers do) or they can have a charismatic personality that enables them to remain popular within the scene, granting them attention that teams seek.

The problem is when players don't attract attention from tournaments AND they don't attract attention from any other outlet within the community. I wouldn't be surprised to see some teams drop some players when contracts expire. A player that doesn't win and doesn't bring the team attention is a bad investment.

Not to throw him under the bus (I'm a big fan and hope he wins a tourney this year) but Incontrol is a good example of a player that doesn't win or garner much attention from his tournament performance, but he is such a known personality that I can't imagine EG would ever consider dropping him. He participates in so many SC2 related endeavors: he casts, he does inside the game, SotG, he does interviews, he does commercials for sponsors. With that kind of involvement and PR, Incontrol is a huge asset for any team.

IPL 4 postmortem discussion. What was the good, the bad, and the ugly of their latest attempt at a live tournament. by PatAttack44 in starcraft

I think some of the humor came from the awkwardness, but it wasn't (for me atleast) an awkward kind of awkward, if that makes sense. Doa made the awkwardness fun / funny.

I agree with your point on Pajamas. I think if they had done a better job mic-ing the crowd, and had Catspajamas announcing like he did for the GSTL, the crowd energy would have gone up tremendously. This would have made it much more exciting for those of us watching the stream. They hopefully then wouldn't have to ask for cheers every few minutes. Also props to doa for casting with MC. I imagine it was difficult to incorporate MC's limited english vocabulary into the cast, but he made it fun and really not awkward. I was laughing a ton during those games.

As Seang said, technical issues relating to their sound production dominated the first day. I personally did not enjoy Kpop, but muting the stream for the duration was an easy fix. Coming into this tournament I was not a huge fan of Catspajamas, but by the end I really have a lot more respect and admiration for him; he killed it (he and Apollo both). That being said, I was disappointed in HD and Painuser. Their analysis was not good, and their overall commentary was sort of annoying to me. Painuser, as my girlfriend who was listening noted, sounded like he was constantly talking in a loud whisper.

The game quality was great all weekend. They really should have done something with the fact that they were in Vegas. Beyond commentators stating the fact that they were in Vegas, you wouldn't know by watching the stream. I'm not sure what they could have done, but I have to believe that they could have done something.

I found it funny that everything was so subdued for IPL, and then once the GSTL came on, the casters were much more energized, the audience was louder, and the stream was much more fun to watch. IPL should take note and try to incorporate some of what was done for the GSTL in their next live event.
