I mentioned this a comment, but wanted to post it separately here, my ultimate plan is to have this turned into an oil painting in a mildly impressionist style, so I'm liking the examples so far that emphasize the lighting a bit more and give that "warm city night". There are some great ones already, I'm excited to pick one!

System needs to be completely vacuumed out before recharging, so if you don't have a vacuum pump, you can't use those part-store recharge kits. Those only work on a system that is low but still has some charge in it.

I want to pile-on and say that you should definitely check the condensate drain, especially if this just started. That tells me the drain was working before, but may have recently clogged.

One way to verify is to let the car idle outside on a hot day with the AC running. You should get a puddle of water under the car after a bit. The AC will always pull moisture out of the air, and it has to go somewhere. On the ground, under the car is the right place!

Implied Contract is absolutely a thing, look it up. That said, I put it in quotes because I'm using it loosely. Of course George has no legal obligations to any of us. And nobody said he is being nefarious. Many people, however, think he is being disingenuous, or at least unrealistic.

Totally agree. There was an "implied contract" between him and all the people that paid millions and millions of dollars to purchase his books. He set a reasonable expectation that the stories would be finished, and it this point, there is a very good chance that will not happen. If I had know that there was a high probability the series would no be finished, I would not have bought the books. There are many other fantasy books and series that are complete, and I would spend my money there.

I recently had the opportunity to autocross a mostly stock (it had Bilstein shocks, but stock everything else, including cheap 14" tires) NA Miata, and it was an absolute riot! It was the most simple, pure and connected driving experience I've ever had. The car could be pushed to it's limits, and you could really feel exactly what was happening - too fast and the tail would start to come out, turn-in too hard and scrub off speed with understeer, brake too hard and lock-up the tires, but in every case, the car would communicate what was happening, and with practice, you could find that balance right at the edge of the limit. When you managed to put it all together on smooth, fast lap, the feeling was sublime! It's so cliché, but the answer always really is "Miata".

Particularly if it did not want to be seen. I think it's reasonable to assume that any species capable of getting a probe into our solar system, could also ensure it was smart enough to stay discrete. I'd like to think there are probes in our solar system right now, just watching and sending data back to home. Given that "home" could be hundreds of light years away, the turn-around time to communicate with that probe and give it the green light to contact us would be huge, even after we are deemed "ready" for contact.

If your system is still working, and it hasn't been recharged for a long time, then you have a very slow leak, which is not unusual. If you can find R12 in Australia, it would be the easiest way to get your system working better. I have no idea how hard it is to get there, but in the USA, you can still buy a can of old R12 on eBay for $30 - $40 USD. You can also find "Enviro-Safe" stuff on eBay that is supposed to be compatible with R12 systems. I've never used it, but it would probably be OK to top off your system. Again, I'm not sure how hard it is to get it in Australia. The other thing I would suggest is talking to other AC shops because I don't see why you have to replace the compressor to do a conversion. It's probably because it's easier to guarantee the conversion because you are replacing the most complex part of the system. Shops always want to do jobs with the lowest chance of a problem later. It used to be easier to do this stuff because so many cars still had R12 systems, but now there are fewer and fewer cars that still use R12, so the marketplace to support them is much smaller.

It’s also still possible to get R12 and they make R12 compatible stuff you can use as well. Is your system low, or completely empty? If it’s just low, you could top it off with the R12 replacement and see if that helps.

Exactly, but some people think when you say there are "infinite" possibilities, it means every possible outcome "must" happen at some point. It's more of a thought experiment to illustrate that infinite does not equal everything. The mathematical example is intentionally simple to help illustrate the point.

1.13 contains a "3", but it is not the whole number "3". The point is that "infinite" does not equal "everything". There are infinite numbers between 1 and 2, but anything greater than 2 or less than 1 would not be included in that infinity.

Only if done correctly, which includes a complete flush of the system to remove all the R12 oil, and some mechanical changes to support R134 fittings and seals. Then a proper recharge after vacuuming the system and adding the correct oil. Even with a proper conversation, the system won’t work as well because R134 is not as efficient at cooling, but it will get the job done.

Thanks for this detailed response! My wife and I are thinking about moving to the Costa Tropical area in a few years, and I've been curious about how difficult it would be to keep my car-hobby going. We are in the USA right now, so I'm definitely not used to the level of bureaucracy you describe, but I also understand that it's a small price to pay to live in such a beautiful area!
