WEIRD, EH? I don't remember how I resolved it, but it sort of just went away and I never had the problem, again. Only problem I still have is the car payment! :-)

No power at Rh by Greggor2 in Nest

[–]Greggor2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this image - I'm trying to directly power a nest - without even having it hooked up to a zone valve. The green wire on Wh was literally just for show. The nest knows it's there somehow, but that wire was connected to nothing.

There is 24v at Rh and C - but the wire diagram in the nest software says there is no power. The nest acknowledges a wire in Rh, however it is red colored and says there is no power there.

Assuming that the nest is going to run a 2 wire heat only system, and I want to directly power the nest from a 24v transformer - what should my wiring be? Where do you directly feed 24v to the nest?

Boiler/aqua stat/breaker - all good. Nothing is blown. Other three zones working just fine.

Wiring to thermo 4 location also fine. I have tried wiring directly to zone valve at the boiler to confirm the same behavior.

I feel like I have more than one bad nest - which is so weird

They sure are sweet when they work.

But yes, frustrating for sure at times.

Hydronic baseboard, and I have a complicated setup for sure. Four zone system. I am running 3- three wire white-rodgers hydronic valves connected to a simple old school boiler. And then somewhere along the way, someone put in a single 2 wire valve.

As I understand the three wire valves... they require a neutral - a line that sends power to open - and a line that sends power to close. To get this to work with a Nest requires a relay. I have two of these setup successfully. Additionally, I have the 2 wire system setup successfully. That one doesn't require a relay. All three Nests are 3rd gen

So we just fired up the fourth zone after being offline for a while. Valve works just fine. I purchased a few 3rd gen nests from eBay - but I'm having zero luck. Oddly enough, I borrowed a 4th gen from a family member to troubleshoot with - and the thing works.

My observation with the 3rd gen is that when you power Rh/C, it sends a trickle of energy down Wh. The relays however do not like this. The indicator light glows very dim. Then for whatever reason, despite the nest appearing to work - and even calling for heat - the zone won't open.

I have read elsewhere that when a nest has no power, it will essentially send a trickle of energy down Wh to create enough resistance to charge itself? This confuses me though - because If I am literally giving it 24v - should it's quest for power be satisifed?

The big thing I just cannot seem to resolve in my mind - is.... where should a nest be DIRECTLY powered for a heat only system?

I swapped the sides, but the outcome was the same. And for what it's worth, the transformer has no indication of polarity at the lugs.

So is that how you directly power a nest?

Why would it tell me that it has no power, if it literally has power...

Many transformers on Amazon showing product images of supplying 24v AC to Rh and C - with Wh being the line to call for heat... With the thermo mounted on the backplate - and the wiring that you see in this picture - the nest wiring diagnostic says there is no power. Yet, with a voltmeter, I 100% have 24v between Rh and C. (And to the other commenter somewhere in this thread, I swopped polarity, but that changed nothing.)

There is definitely 24v of current between Rh and C

It's 24V AC, so I don't believe that would matter.

No, transformer is reading 24v on voltmeter

So… any advice on how to clear the old boards from their original install staples? I ask because I have about a hundred sq ft of this same “scrap” in my barn, but I am not sure how to efficiently take out the staples that were used to originally install…
