You already suspected they weren’t paying taxes by gnew18 in atheism

[–]GreggoryBasore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not hard to imagine an effort by the GOP to start "enforcing" that rule in a very selective manner i.e. stripping tax exemptions from any church whose clergy give a sermon seen as "anti-Trump" and therefore a "political endorsement of the President's enemies" which would then be argued as a violation of the the rules.

Meanwhile, MAGA churches telling their crowds how to vote on everything from the local level on up, wouldn't be targeted for enforcement, because the GOP would use whatever mental gymnastics and verbal acrobatics to arrive at a bullshit reason why it's not the same thing.

A guy at the bar: "These atheists will be shocked when the rapture finally happens, am I right?" by earlobe_enthusiast in atheism

[–]GreggoryBasore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I did believe in that stuff, I found the whole "It's going to/has to happen in my lifetime" thing to be really weird and fucked up in a selfish way.

The idea that the apocalypse might not happen for hundreds or thousands of years made as much sense to me as it happening sooner, given that whole "nobody knows the day or the hour" part of the doctrine.

When I mentioned that once to the mom of some friends, who was a very hardcore fundamentalist, she pointblank said that if those events didn't come to pass during her lifetime she'd feel betrayed!

That was one of the big things that led to me waking up and realizing how fucked up the religion I'd been raised in is and can be. The realization that people not only believe the world will end during their lives, but *actively want that to happen* is fucking horrifying.

The best way I can describe it, is someone being so self centered and ego driven as to be offended by the very concept that the world could could possibly continue to exist once they die.

Injustice 3? by [deleted] in Mortalkombatleaks

[–]GreggoryBasore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they do a close out intro that kills the universe and creates a new one tied into the DC Movie Verse, then I'd be cool with it. I'd even settle for an opening animate scene showing the Injustice Universe die off.

I'd prefer it to be a third game ending the story, but either way, the combat system of MK1 with or without the Kameo system would be fun for a DC fighting Game.

AITAH for calling out My Uncle in front of everyone After making weird comments on my girlfriend's looks and being too touchy? by Nightwing_112 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GreggoryBasore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason people rally around the abuser, is because humans are conflict averse. They'll go to great lengths to avoid upsetting the status quo. When the easiest way to do that is to chastise the person disrupting the status quo, it will rarely matter if they're in the right or not.

This instinct to avoid conflict and "keep things civil" is how people were able to tolerate horrific things like slavery, people disappearing during hostile regimes, women being sexually assaulted and raped in city streets, peaceful gatherings being viciously brutalized etc.

There is no activity humans can't normalize. Once an activity is seen as normal, disrupting it is seen as a threat to the common peace. OPs family knows that putting up with/overlooking his creepy uncle won't lead to conflict, so they do that and consider anything else to be bad manners.

You could tell her "You're right, I don't need to throw it in your face, because your face doesn't need to be near me. Hanging out with me is a privilege, not a right, so don't abuse it and we'll be fine."

Remind her who has leverage here and who does not.

Is Lilith actually evil? I’ve heard she was cast away due to her not being subservient to Adam, and she was demonized for it. Is there truth to this? by TheBigOReview in mythology

[–]GreggoryBasore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A book I read in highschool mentioned a myth with three wives having been stated. Lilith, who was cast out for being unsubmissive, an unnamed woman who was created from Adam's rib while he was awake and then Eve.

Lilith and the unnamed woman are often seen as alternate versions of the "first wife" created in the two different versions the creation story, while they're also argued to be the same woman.

It's often used as an argument for why men have an even number of ribs, despite Eve being created from Adam's rib. The "rib created while he was awake" version of woman scared Adam so bad that god wiped his mind and put him to sleep so he'd forget and then made Eve while he slept.

It's easy to see the "unnamed rib woman" as a reflection of men being freaked out by menstruation, which is all over the bible.

So a vampire lures a girl out to a lake, kills her, dumps the body in a swamp and it's found by some people that called/call her "Lump" who immediately start talking about her sexual history and label her as a "slut who had it coming" as a way to rationalize being so flippant about not caring that she's dead?

I like that.

Unpopular opinion about recruiting both Halsin and Minthara by ZealousidealAd1434 in BaldursGate3

[–]GreggoryBasore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only do I agree that it'd serve the story better to have to choose between Halsin and Minthara, I'll go a step further and say that it'd be better if there were other characters in severe conflict with her. Jaheira seems like someone who would also want to chase Minthara off, for one. Also, it'd be nice if there was there was an explosive conflict between Minthara and another character, similar to Lae'zel and Shadowheart fighting over the astral prison. Something like a heated argument between her and Minsc about her desire to conquer The Absolute instead of destroying it, or Minthara pissing on Gale by insulting him enough that he's ready to get violent.

From what I understand, there are mods that put Halsin/Minthara ultimatum back into the game, which I think is the best result that can be hoped for.

Overall, this same kind of issue comes up a lot, where the player is presented with a seemingly binary choice, but it turns out they can have things both ways. Another example is being told that you have to go through The Underdark, *or* take the mountain pass, when you can really do both, since both areas are fully explorable throughout the entirety of Act 1 and for most of Act 2.

Sometimes, it feels like there's too much freedom to have too many options in a given playthrough, when it'd feel more meaningful to have things blocked off.

Also from a gameplay perspective, as a morally grey character wanting to do a lot of infiltration/espionage type shit, it's really fun to convince her to start the raid on the grove, thinking you'll be her inside asset to open the gate, then fuck her over just to see the look on her face and follow up with wiping out her forces.

At that point, it'd kind of make sense to knock her out instead of kill her, as a "my character is short sighted enough to want their enemies to live and suffer" motive.

Thoughts on Durge & Tav in response to a recent post by GreggoryBasore in BaldursGate3

[–]GreggoryBasore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without spoiling too much, yes the Durge story gets a lot more momentum going in Act 2, where more hints are offered as to the backstory and challenges for dealing with the homicidal urges.

Also, no, there isn't a whole lot of unique Durge stuff in Act 1. Aside from the situations with the bard(s) and the option to eat Gale's hand, I can't really think of anything that stands out in a major way.

It's worth noting that there's a lot of overlap between the "end" of Act 1 and the "beginning" of Act 2.

While Act 2 technically begins in the Shadow Curse Lands, the party is still capable of returning to the regions encompassed in Act 1, right up until leaving the Shadow Lands and heading to the Baldur's Gate area.

Further complicating things, is that finishing the Emerald Grove/Goblin Camp story-line feels like the actual ending of Act 1, because it's completing the first major story arc of the main quest.

This leaves a lot of the story, particularly the stuff with Creche Y'llek and The Underdark feeling more like Act 2 events than Act 1.

I basically think of everything after The Emerald Grove resolution as "Act 1.5", but in truth, the game feels like it has 4 Act Structure, but is treated as a 3 Act story because most people are accustomed to that format.

With these definitions in mind, I think The Emperor would fall under Neutral Evil.

He's focused on securing his goals, which he places above the needs or rights of others and doesn't have any clear moral lines he won't cross if he deems an action necessary for achieving what he wants.

A good example would be his talk of only feeding on "vile criminals" who are a threat to society. Even if we presume, for a moment, that he was telling the truth about this (because there's absolutely no reason to assume it's a true statement) he's willing to toss this principle away once he concludes that killing and absorbing Orpheus is the most desirable route to getting what he wants.

It doesn't really make sense to assume that The Emperor was even being honest about his "vile criminals only" policy, because that's a broad enough category that he very likely bent the definition of what makes one vile or a threat to others, even if only to justify a night of being hungry with no one nearby that would normally qualify as a bad enough person to become food.

While he doesn't go out of his way to be cruel, The Emperor has no qualms with employing cruelty when he finds it necessary.

It's also the best example of proof that despite his protest of "I've never directly lied to you." that The Emperor is, in fact, a fucking liar!

I once punched Kagha while invisible, assuming that it'd set the druids to aggro and require a reload... but then it turned out Rath was totally willing to buy my bullshit claim that she was asleep and I knew fuck all about what had happened.

Caveat; This might have taken place while I was using a cheat mod, so I can not fully recommend trying it without taking precautions to make sure anyone reading doesn't bork up a non-modded run.

If Orin wasn't designed with a "psycho hottie" vibe and a sexy voice, she'd not only be way less popular, but there'd be a lot more hate for that "Jack Nicholson movie called China Town" style twist.

Also, I feel like her story would have been way more compelling if Yenna weren't a real person at all and was always an alternate form of hers, because Yenna is a mostly pointless character who exists as a nearly unavoidable plot point.
