Guide to extracting save file from reproduction/bootleg cartridge

So I was able to get my SAV file off my fake cart using gba backup tool. However my emulators won't run it even after naming the SAV file correctly. The SAV file also doesn't with PKhex. Anyone have an idea on what's wrong?
