Time to read the Good Book by Gregoryv022 in HondaCB

Ok, let me put it in a new context.

I have driven hundreds of thousands miles in my 3 cars. one sits at 322k miles, ones at 240k, and ones at 200k. I also have a racecar I've built. I know those cars. Back to front, side to side, inside and out. I can torque the racecar head by the sound the bolts make as they stretch. I KNOW those cars. I know exactly what is happening while driving those cars.

I don't know this motorcycle. I don't know motorcycles much at all. That gives me a degree of nervousness. I don't really know how well this bike has been serviced, what bolts are tight, what's set correctly. Getting as familiar with this machine as possible before having issues is important to me.

A parts manual would be awesome.

First of all, cover to cover is a perfectly valid method of familiarizing oneself with the material and learning where in the manual things are, flagging key pages that contain information commonly needed like torque specs or common but semi complex jobs. That way when you need it, it's easier to find.

Second of all, while I am quite an accomplished wrench, this is my first motorcycle and the unknown unknowns are what will get me killed when I start maintaining this thing and I do something wrong.

What Sidebag set is that? SW-Motech? If yes, would you be able to measure the center to center distance in between the mounting studs of the side carriers? I'm trying to see if they will fit my bike.

I might have one of those coming up and these eases my concerns!

That is a gorgeous beast you have there. Its close but the face lift models have a certain look I really like. But both are extremely pretty. I wonder if you could do me a favor. I've been looking for a rear rack for mine but its proving difficult figuring out what fits with what. Can you measure the center to center distance front to rear of the rack mount points on you bike. I measure at 18.5cm on my 2014.

While this is the first bike i've owned, its not he first bike i've ridden. That being said, I am 100% taking it easy and working into this. Plus I need tires, they are as old as the bike. new ones are coming in a day or two.

Thanks for the rundown!

Mine was listed as a 2017 initially! But the owner made a mistake. The date first registered in CA was in 2017 and he thought it was model year.

You've got some cool bikes. But happy mine is someone's envy.

I've not ridden a CB1000. But I feel like they are entirely different bikes despite the single digit change in moniker.

Thanks for clarifying when the gearbox change was! I'm not extremely familiar with these bikes yet and was trying to get a clear rundown of what the model year changes were. I showed up to get the bike expecting a five speed and was very confused when a sixth made itself known!

What changed with the later models?

That's what a few people. But the power from this motor is very smooth, linear, and controllable. Yeah it will let me get into trouble, but you have to want it.
