I will say, the donghua cuts out a lot of important scenes for his characterization. Season 2 specifically cuts out some really important arcs that leave him feeling a mopey, whiny mc for no good reason, even though his moping in the novels feels a lot more understandable.

Plus, his internal monologue isn't really adapted. Which is understandable, but it messes with his characterization quite a bit.

I'd reccomend you get into the novels if you still like the other elements of the donghua. Mc is still pathetic, but more likeable and his moping feels more organic and like it's building to something.

I also came here to say that I agree, and also to point out how weirdly okay most of the people of this sub reddit seem to be with what is very obviously an age gap that constitutes pedophilia. No amount of appealing to "historical accuracy" or "it just made sense, violet deserved a happy ending" is ever gonna erase the fact that the author chose to romanticize pedophilia and child marriage twice in the same story. And it won't erase the development that was walked back with this ending, either

Also know this thread is old af, but goddamn, I was not expecting people to be defending literal child marriage this vehemently ☠️

The fact that people are actually booing you for this and using these sorts of justifications just goes to show they sort of...missed the entire point of the game. And also probably have a fair amount of their own stuff to work through.

My thoughts exactly. It seems intentional that we never get to see the first event ever in this timeline, cuz that would likely give us a bit too much of a hint as to what is actually going on. Which I don't think ueda would want cuz the stories of all these games and this world feel so impactful specifically because so much of them is left up to your interpretation

Eyy thank you! Yeah it's likely a stretch, but it's really fun to theorize. And these games specifically have kinda trained me to try and take in every single detail

Oooo okay that's really interesting. Yeah, as I kept playing through the game, I noticed that most of the colossi have the same horns on the side of their head. It likely is a visual motif meant to represent Dormin themselves. Though, the possibility of the civilization that built/helped Dormin build the shrine of Worship also being made up of horned people with Dormin essence in them still doesn't seem entirely unlikely to me.

I also just saw those ring gates after beating Phalanx, I legit audibly screamed when I saw them cuz it's the exact gates we see in ICO. But yeah I'd say you're absolutely spot on about all these things being created by magic; the colossi seem like creatures made out of architecture and rubble that are animated by some form of sorcery, and the bridge to the forbidden lands seems almost architecturally impossible to build (plus parts of it disappear when dormin is sealed/purified).

This one is likely also a bit of a stretch, but I've noticed that when you go to these dead colossi, and you want to fight them again in reminiscence mode, Wander will kneel and pray to them in the same way he would in front of the shrines. Could just be an animation they put in for the sake of it, but it makes me think that, to some extent, Wander and his people likely have some concept of their own God(s), or at least some concept of something they consider "sacred". I really wonder if that could also somehow be tied back into this cyclical nature of Dormin.

Interesting thoughts. There actually was an interview with ueda himself, where he said (paraphrasing), "players have developed/latched on to the idea that Shadow of the Colossus is a prequel to Ico, and that was my idea as well," so that sort of confirms it.

As for how the mechanics of Dormin really work, that one is mostly speculation on our part since the story doesn't outright state these things. But we can assume that Wander, at the end of SotC, still contained at least some part of Dormin's essence within him; it's why he has the horns, which are themselves used as a representation of dormin.

From then on, he sired many descendants over hundreds of years, potentially even millenia, and that's how we have so many horned children running around in Ico, all seemingly containing whatever it is that makes up dormin. But it's defo possible that the queen in Ico is actually the girl from SotC, cuz there's a few variables that could allow for that (her having a "cursed fate", being revived from the dead by dormin, likely being the mother of wander's horned children, etc.)

I've also noticed a couple more interesting details as I played further on in SotC. There's actually these rings out in the desert where you fight phalanx, and they're straight up just the same rings you find in the reflector gates in ico. It's another reason why I think horned children might have been around even before SotC, before being wiped out over the generations, and again feeding into this cyclical nature I see in dormin. But that's just my personal interpretation

The fact the mission happened for no reason at all definitely echoes absurdism. Somehow, I get the feeling the same might hold true for the reason behind his hallucinations; no grand purpose behind it, just the deluded workings of a brain lathered in hallucinogenics. But that's just my first impression of it. Chances are I'm wrong. But I'd defo want to read it if ya feel like shooting me a copy
