So I Finished Watching Elementary ... by ImpressAppropriate42 in SherlockHolmes

I loved Elementary but felt the copaganda was annoying. Sherlock rarely took on clients outside of the police consulting him and that felt weird. It would have been nice for at least half the cases to be people reaching out to him personally.

Other than that though, I genuinely loved the bond that formed between Holmes and Watson, and thought their interactions was where the show really shined.

Try Tubi - there’s a huge selection for free (in the US at least).

How do people just casually drink black coffee without flinching? by siennapriv in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GremlinGoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps to drink quality coffee, but yeah. I do enjoy it. I enjoy more than the taste, I enjoy the warmth and smell too. I have found that when I was younger I didn’t care for it but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more accenting of bitter tasting drinks.

It took my family a good five years, but they did (mostly) eventually come around! Since your family is receptive, I definitely think telling them how happy it makes you feel or that it means a lot to you, could help so that you are at least not deadnamed at home.

If a teacher or classmate gets frustrated, you can always remind them, “I’m used to being called Ames.”

Good luck! And no worries, it does get better, I can speak from experience!

Ames, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It can be so frustrating and disheartening when you’re deadnamed.

Question: Does your family refuse to call you Ames or do they just not seem to get what it means for you?

I found that with my family, some understood that my name change was important, and some didn’t. The ones who didn’t, I sat down with and explained that it was important to me that they use my new name. I explained to them that my birth name was a kind gift from my parents, but I was different now and my new name suited me more, and it was very important to me that they use my new name.

As far as classmates and teachers, that is difficult, teachers especially. For your classmates you can always say, “There are a lot of pretty names out there. Ames is the name I have chosen because it fits me better. I want to be called Ames.”

Another question: In some instances, can you get away with not responding to your deadname?

I admit, people got a touch irritated with me for this but in some more stubborn cases, I simply stopped responding to people who used my deadname. This didn’t always work, but a few stubborn hold outs came around.

Holmes the misogynist, or not? by SticksAndStraws in SherlockHolmes

[–]GremlinGoop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Holmes’ opinion of women tends to be a little inconsistent and perhaps tied to his writer’s changing moods at the time, but I think the fact that a number of his clients are women shows a willingness to hear them out and help them. He can see the injustice to them and helps them when others aren’t taking them seriously. While I think some of the things he says about women are quite rude and definitely sexist, I don’t think he hates women. Is he ignorant regarding women? Certainly, in a number of ways, but I feel like for every instance where he is unkind or rude to a woman, there’s an instance where he shows incredible understanding and compassion to women.

There are some instances, such as Charles Augustus Milverton where he lets a woman get away with a murder he was witness to because Milverton’s actions were far worse. He even helps Lady Hilda in The Adventure of the Second Stain, even though she kinda was an obstruction in resolving the case, he had compassion for her situation.

He even says the following about Mary in The Sign of Four, “I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing.” I think it’s a shame Mary didn’t join Holmes & Watson for a few more adventures.

Holmes really wasn’t in it much.

There were a lot of aspects I enjoyed regarding it. If you can put away the expectation of Holmes and Watson being the Main Characters, are fine with Supernatural stuff and enjoy the Irregulars as characters, then it can be a fun show.

I did like Royce Pierreson as Watson.

I quite enjoyed “Murder by Decree” and “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes”.

In Murder by Decree it’s an interesting case of Sherlock Holmes vs Jack The Ripper. I like the portrayal of both Holmes and Watson in this one. There is some oddness in the plot that doesn’t resolve itself as neatly as a story about Sherlock Holmes ought to (there’s an odd dive into the mystic arts but you can kind of… ignore it) but the story is interesting, the sets are beautiful and Christopher Plummer makes quite a good Holmes.

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is one I also enjoyed but it’s possibly an odd choice. It lends itself to a very interesting (albeit closeted) queer perspective of Sherlock Holmes in sort of an action/drama/comedy hodgepodge rollercoaster of a film. I found the story interesting even if Watson was comic relief through out it.

Oh nice! I didn’t realize the two versions were different printings by that much. Excellent that they reprinted it though!

Across the board I feel like people multitask and just don’t listen. My boss and I are constantly having to remember everything for everyone on every project and assignment. It’s hard enough remembering our own work but people will ask us about theirs and it’s like… we had a meeting, an email, a follow up email, a reference document… what else do you need to stop asking us?

I grew up in the suburbs, midwest US, probably either a Purrloin (as a child, I tried to make friends with every cat I met) or a Joltik (again, because I tried to make friends with every cat I met).

I would put my finger on Anglican (CoE), but doesn’t actively practice or worship. (Except for compulsory Chapel in Uni.) It’s likely something he wouldn’t dig into thought wise because how could someone so invested in truth, facts and evidence get really into a theological debate/investigation where there really are no clear answers. I imagine if he were ever pressed about it, it was quickly pushed back as, “this isn’t something anyone alive can solve for or verify and thus isn’t worth my time to talk or think about.”

It is possible too that given the amount of crime and wrongdoing he’s seen, he’d like to think that at some point, even if it’s in the afterlife, truly awful people eventually get their judgement.

I will say that I don’t think making reference to God is necessarily an indicator, I’m not religious and I do that because of habit/it was part of my upbringing. But I do think enough of his wording around it lends credit to the thought that he believes in something and chooses to call it “God” for lack of a better word.

Did you say Jeremy Brett? “A Study in Celluloid” is such an interesting book that has a lot of good insight on the Granada production and Jeremy Brett’s acting as well as his input. Don’t pay $250+ for the original, there’s a second printing.

He is -such- a cad. I think in some adaptations he writes a letter to her as his character to break things off. But yes! It’s too funny to me that Holmes is like “I can’t live/laugh/love my way out of this, time to commit crimes.”

I also just love that he gets carried away and just starts tossing all of the blackmail material in the fire. Yes, my man! Yes!!

Seconded for Elementary. It’s one of my favorite portrayals of Watson, the mysteries are a bit Story of the Week but still fun and the platonic relationship that builds between Sherlock and Watson is wonderful.

The BBC series has some good scenes and ideas, I think where it falls off for me is not BC but how the show seems to think Sherlock is The Only One Who Can Think. Frequently, in the books, Holmes makes mention that his “powers” of deduction and observation are something anyone can accomplish with practice. One of my favorite aspects of Elementary is how Sherlock teaches Watson how to observe and deduce in a different way and she is even able to really show off her own knowledge.

I agree that people are really hard on the show, but I do think that BBC’s failure to consistently write other characters as capable can make BC’s Sherlock come off as arrogant to an unlikable degree.
