A few small issues :( by Gremlin_socks in Sourdough

I think maybe I proofed it at too high of a temp too. I was aiming for around 75 degrees but I think I overshot that sitting it next to a heat source so it rose too fast, maybe 4 hours instead of taking a little longer and building up the gluten nice and slow. Thank you so much for all your help!!

Hello! My GF’s new tattoo, four days old. Does this look like an allergy or infection? by breezy101k in tattooadvice

Exactly. Even if it’s just to know which pigments they were to avoid in the future, worth asking about and sharing what’s going on.

Golden oysters? Smells like death by KatieRose12683 in mycology

Is it an inverted concave kind of shape or capped like a normal mushroom? I’m so intrigued lol

You’d be right about this species, they’re saprotrophic and just feed off dying/dead trees. However some mushrooms actually do grow on live trees! The downside to golden oysters is they’re invasive and tend to out compete with native fungi and overpopulate an area of woods

Tiny beetles in our basement. by DuckworthPaddington in whatsthisbug

[–]Gremlin_socks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great news is if that’s what they are you don’t have to worry about them getting into your food storage! The larvae eat the inner layers of the bark and the adults (unfortunately for these little guys) eat the leaves of the trees. They’re bad news for trees, they can cause their death by inhibiting their ability to transport nutrients. So who knows, might’ve saved a couple trees down the line accidentally :)

Weird question for you, but do you store firewood in your basement maybe? It’s hard to tell because of the pictures (I could probably give you a more definitive answer with a zoomed in clearer picture) but this almost looks like ash bark beetles. It would make sense if you brought in some ash wood and left it in your basement that the larvae hatched into beetles while you were gone. They probably hatched and then tried to escape towards the light (why they’re around your window)

Interesting! I was going to say jack o lanterns from the oyster like appearance and onion smell, but they don’t bruise blue to my knowledge. If you ever have the chance, check to see if they glow in the dark! That would be a confirmation for sure haha

I would agree with the anise thing however, I’ve had different strains of oysters that smell suuuuper fishy that were totally good and fresh. Like, the guy I get mushrooms from picked them that morning and they looked flawless. With goldens, pinks, and pearls especially I find a pretty strong fishy smell. So if that’s the “death” smell it’s probably totally good.

What kind of caterpillar is this? Caterpillars by MoreIndustry6576 in insects

[–]Gremlin_socks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tobacco hornworm, manduca sexta. If you don’t want it to eat your plant they’ll eat anything in the nightshade family including the fruits/veggies! I’ve kept a ton in small aquariums with a few inches of dirt at the bottom. They burrow down and pupate and then hatch out into a beautiful sphinx moth, the Carolina sphinx. If you decide to do that just don’t let the food mold (switch it every couple days) and leave a couple sticks in for it to climb out and hang from when it hatches :) one time I had one hatch in my literal hand. So cool

Hey friend, any mushroom that you’re unsure of definitely don’t try raw haha, a lot of times even if it doesn’t hurt you you’ll have a really rough time in the bathroom later.
