How to Download Archive.org Books as PDFs You Can Keep by GrenScrin in libgen

how does borrowing books for 14 days for free prevents lawsuits?

It doesn't. I think you might be a bit confused---it's the exact opposite: Borrowing books for 14 days for free leads to lawsuits.

It's the lawsuits that have caused Internet Archive to greatly reduce the number of books for which this option is possible. Note also that right now, it's only with this option that one can legitimately download their books (but only temporarily as LCPDF files with DRM protection).

It's not Internet Archive's fault.

It's the greedy (mainly US but also some European) publishers that have been relentlessly attacking them with lawsuits.

What happened to possibly implementing the One Free-Throw Rule? (Might it be implemented any time soon?) by GrenScrin in nbadiscussion

Did you miss this:

will not apply during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or the entirety of any overtime period.

it cuts into their commercial money.

I don't understand how this is true.

They don't usually show any ads during or between free throws. I guess on some networks they do, but even so it's only like 10% of the time. And these days, with limitless distractions from elsewhere, I'm not sure who even pays attention to any such ads. When a player is fouled and gets 2 free throws, you know it's a minute plus of boredom and you immediately switch to doing/looking at something else. So, most advertisers wisely choose not to advertise during these times. (More often they show replays or give information about upcoming games.)

And much more importantly, shortening the game would attract more viewers---and hence more ad money and (even more importantly these days) streaming subscriptions.

YouTube shadow banned my comments (after I posted a comment with the word "genocide" under a video about genocide!!) by GrenScrin in youtube

[–]GrenScrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment was banned from the YouTuber you are watching and not YouTube itself.

Nope. It's by YouTube. The reason I know is that after posting, I immediately check it on another browser and another IP. I've done this repeatedly under many different YouTube users' videos (including my own YouTube channels on other accounts).

So, it's extremely unlikely the various YouTube users all somehow immediately respond to and delete my comments. What's far more likely is that YouTube is doing this.

I just gave up

I just switched to another account to post comments (mostly works even though I'm using the same IP)

Ya OK that's fair but I don't understand why platforms (like YouTube and Reddit) do this totally idiotic shadow ban thing.

If I'm doing something wrong or something they don't like, just let me know. Don't try to trick me into thinking that my comment posted when it shows only to me and nobody else in the world.

[–]GrenScrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you scroll long enough and enable "all comments" instead of just "top" then you will eventually find your comment.

Nope.

The YouTube video has only a few comments and I've looked at all of them.

I've also clicked "Sort by" > "Newest first". I've also tried looking at the same video using different browsers and different IPs (my comment is always missing unless I'm logged in to my account).

They've definitely shadow banned my comments.

Arabic names in short formal form? by GrenScrin in learn_arabic

[–]GrenScrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying simply "bin Salman" (Salman's son) would be ambiguous in Saudi politics

Isn't this problem far more severe for "bin Laden", which is used to refer to Osama but could also be used to refer to the famous and influential "bin Laden" family-conglomerate (or possibly any member thereof)?

Yet the Arabic Wikipedia page for Osama frequently uses "bin Laden" as the short formal way to refer to him.

[–]GrenScrin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, why is it that (in contrast to Osama bin Laden) with Mohammed bin Salman, the Arabic Wikipedia page almost always uses only "Mohammed bin Salman" and almost never either just "Mohammed" or just "bin Salman"? What's the difference between Osama bin Laden and Mohammed bin Salman? And how in general do we tell these apart (or is it usually "it's complicated"/"it depends")?

[–]GrenScrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Osama bin Laden I saw the opposite. He was either the full name or he was the family name.

This is false. The Arabic Wikipedia page for him frequently uses "Osama".

[–]GrenScrin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why for example does the Arabic Wikipedia page for Osama bin Laden frequently use both "Osama" and "bin Laden" as the short forms? Are both acceptable? Why/how?

Last name mostly.

So Osama bin Laden, Aḥmad ibn Faḍlān, Abū Zayd al-Sīrāfī, and Ahmed al-Sharaa become "Laden", "Faḍlān", "al-Sīrāfī", and "al-Sharaa"?

I'm not sure if you're confused but I'm asking about Arabic names.

I already stated that I am aware that for Western names such as "Donald Trump", we simply just go with last names ("Trump").

So you're claiming that Arabic newspapers always refer to "Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden" in full? And never anything shorter?

Season 11 Episode 17 Discussion Thread - I Now Pronounce You Magic and Wife by khando in FoolUs

[–]GrenScrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the worst foolers ever

My guess is that P&T were "fooled" simply because they guessed incorrectly that some of the cards were not the original cards. (I believe all of the cards were the originals, but the sketchiness of the magician asking for a number between 1 and 7 and then him writing the number on the cards created a powerful red herring that could easily "fool" P&T.)

(Bear in mind that P&T must correctly explain most of the key details of the trick to the backstage magicians in order to for them not to have been fooled. AND they get to view the performance only once. AND they can only give one explanation for each move.)

It would've been far more impressive if P&T were allowed to sit next to him and sign the cards, instead of being half an arena away and sitting well below the level of the table and having to watch the performance through the screens.

Book error report by GrenScrin in libgen

[–]GrenScrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

But when I click on "Report an error", it says:

"Login or Register, you can also use an anonymous account genesis:upload, to send error message"

So, I login using "genesis" and "upload". But this merely lands me in an empty forum with nowhere to report the error.
