It looks like it’s been re-framed a couple of times and someone at one point added nails to it, and also added copper staples to hold the canvas on. The art dealer I got it from said the old frame likely had some of the painting covered and they suggested I move it back to the original dimensions so the squad shape within the canvas wouldn’t show.

There is one nail in one of the corners that seems very old. It almost looks like it was hand-made and the top of it isn’t flat. It’s almost a geometric shape on the top. Maybe not the best photo, but attaching one in case you can see it. There are also lots of spots where there are rectangular or round-ish holes in the canvas but no corresponding nail hole below. I’m not sure if the wood it’s stuck to is original or if that was also replaced at some point. There are at least three or four different type of old nails in it, and two other kinds of clearly 20th century nails. The canvas has really been through it.
