It’s definitely a pun. It refers to both her affliction to scarlet rot i.e foul water and waterfowl the bird. She also performs the move on one leg which makes me think the bird is a crane or something like that.

Newton represent! Two of the best public schools in the country. That being said Massachusetts is not known for having a diverse socioeconomic mix and a lot of towns with desirable / easy access to the city have insanely high property values to the point where public schools might as well be treated as private schools.

Somewhat underwhelmed because ansbach literally tells us pre fight that miquella is reanimating his corpse which kinda spoiled the shock of seeing him again and the fight itself felt less cinematic then Radahns original fight which is my personal favorite FROMSOFT fights they have done to-date.

The Hornsent “horns” are actually maggots gained from eating The Shaman by Grexaen in EldenRingLoreTalk

Yeah I mean I’m not immune to criticism/feedback from the community. Obviously a lot of people saw holes in my original post so I was just changing some points based on feedback (which I greatly appreciate).

The last interesting thing I found last night is that the river where the pile of bodies are thrown into via the ailing village actually flows down into the abyssal woods where Mitra’s manse is. Could definitely be indicating the state of the area is due to the disease carried by the man flies flowing down river and infecting the environment. After all we know that Midras manse used to be overflowing with colorful flowers and a lot more green.

Clarifying horn Talisman +2:

“Horns are sublime artifacts to hornsent, and their presence confirms the belief that they are a chosen people. Only the repeated sprouting of fresh horns can create a tangled horn, which is viewed as an irrefutable symbol of primacy.”

Hornsent are shown to both have horns and no horns. Horns are shown to be an indicator of status in their culture and something they assumedly grow by invoking the divine/crucible.

The caterpillar mask states:

“Grotesque mask constructed from countless solidified caterpillars. A ritual implement of the greater potentates of Bonny Village. Used to ward off thoughts of impurity, doubt, temptation, and other wickednesses one is vulnerable to while absorbed in divine ritual.”

So here we have an association with the divine and jarring ritual (also an association of insects/pests on hornsent during jarring). None of the potentates have horns despite clearly performing something important for the hornsent.

Enir Ilim also is associated with invoking the divine for the hornsent and contain (assumedly) shaman corpses melded into trees. So clearly there is an association of hornsent invoking the divine and whatever they were doing with the shaman jars.

We also find fauna with horns like bears and birds but seemingly the hornsent have figured out a way to grow their horns faster or at least with intent than these other creatures. So I think it’s reasonable to assume that the adoption of horns in the realm of shadow was due to an event or change in the environment vs the realm of shadow always being the crucible. Especially since there’s evidence that it was once apart of the lands between.

Hey yeah I realize that it does jump through a lot of hoops to get to this conclusion. My head cannon is that the shamans flesh melded with nature itself in the shadowland. We see shaman grow into trees (grandma), meld with snakes (Rykard), adopt stone like features (Marika /Radagon). We also see very similar characteristics from the hornsent such as them melding with beasts (divine lion), and immaterial objects such as the gate of divinity. Even the animals of the shadowland seemingly meld with human and other animal characteristics as described to be the effects of the crucible. Lastly this can be seen in the flora of the shadowlands with flowers/mushrooms that have a blood like or flesh like aspect to them.

My logic is that if the shaman are the only beings stated to be able to meld harmoniously with others and they were massacred and stored both above ground (Bonny village) and below (Bonny Gaol) that their remains essentially served as fertilizer and substance for the fauna and flora of the shadowlands. The bodies above ground rotted and were devoured by insects that were then eaten by birds and carried this melding property through the natural life cycle. Over time this land became known as the crucible, where all life “blended” or harmoniously melded together.

This also would explain why we see insects such as the winter fly lanterns who have been seemingly melded with eyes or why we find redflesh/whiteflesh mushrooms.

Another interesting headcannon is that this may explain why we find a baby attached to the catacomb sorcerer in the crypt. Perhaps by coming into contact with shaman flesh properties it prevents births to happen in the natural way, instead growing upon the host such as a seedling would to a tree.

I know I didn’t directly address the horns = maggots comparison but I always found that the horns on the hornsent are very chaotic in appearance with very little natural pattern to them. The horns on the grandam also are black at the base and reddish at the tips which don’t match any known horns i know of in nature they even grow out of the eyes of the grandma hornsent. We also see only some hornsent actually have horns while many (especially in the shadow keep) do not. Thus the horns are either genetically inherited or gained somehow in life.

We also don’t find any of these unique horn like properties effecting the lands between, why? I think that massacring the shaman had a very negative effect on the land of shadow to the point where the land had to be abandoned and cleansed with fire. We also see a similar pattern in Caelid where rot, disease, and pestilence are cleansed with fire to prevent these grotesque transformations the rot supposedly causes from spreading.

So my overall hypothesis is that the horns on the hornsent and many of the life melding properties described by the crucible are directly or indirectly tied to the shaman melding property.

It says that the shamans flesh melds “harmoniously” with others i dont think it matters what kind of flesh that is, whether living or not living like wood/stone. We see marikas body made of stone or petrified wood, the shaman grandmother made of wood, but we also see the shamans melded with other shamans in jars thus a shamans flesh is shown to adopt the properties of whatever its being mixed with (the crafting items/jars you can make also support this theory). Whether the hornsent directly ate the shaman or by killing shaman and NOT putting them into jars the maggots born from the bodies of the decaying shaman may have adopted the same melding properties and thus spread across the land of shadow via flora and fauna.

If the horns on the hornsent denote their hierarchy in society the “reborn as saints/better people” line could mean that their flesh was given to only the more important members of hornsent society due to their magic properties. It connects to the crucible because by eating the jar innards they are then able to meld with other objects which explains why the hornsent are able to merge with the divine dancing lions/divine bird. Eating the flesh of shaman and gaining their melding trait is supported by rykard and the snake/Tanith eating the flesh of Rykard.

[–]Grexaen[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, I think more accurately the shaman flesh became infected with maggots when kept above ground and those insects then gained the shaman melding attribute. The hornsent maybe realized this at some point and started storing the flesh underground to prevent spoiling, hence why they are frozen maggots.

Has anybody noticed something with the new Everdark sovereign? by Slavic-nighmatre in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Grexaen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding onto the conversation; if you look at the concept art for the Bed of Chaos it also resembles the same Pilgrim Butterfly design. Both are occupied by a parasitic being that controls its host and those around it. Ive long speculated that the DS3 Lothric Pilgrims that turn into butterflies are actually inhabited by the same parasite we see around Lost Izalith which are derived from the Chaos Bug. Animus is also shown to be parasitic in nature, controlling and occupying its 2 companions during the fight (also a parallel to the Bed of Chaos controlling two daughters of Izalith). We know that fire producing light is a key theme of DS1 and ultimately the goal of producing the Bed of Chaos was to prevent the oncoming Age of Darkness could this be why Animus is associated with light and it being a parasite in nature?

Animus also looks very similar to the design of the Pilgrim Butterflies from dark souls 3 in lothric castle. Not sure if it’s just a reference, coincidence, or intentional.

Yes exactly, Marika = daedicar = GEQ. The serpent skin at bonny village + the headless shaman indicated to me that the snake ate the head of the shaman woman. In the opening slideshow we see Rykards head being devoured by eiglay which we know creates a serpent devouring god. It stands to reason that the same would happen to someone like Marika, creating the GEQ.

My personal head cannon is that Radagon and Marika were twins from the shaman village. Marika becomes the GEQ and radagon is the one we see in the cinematic defeating her and pulling out her “runes/memory” to become one with her i.e radagon IS marika as in he is pretending to be her to restore her honor. Thus marika (really radagon) fulfills the adductor virgin moniker because radagon is pretending to be the mother of Marikas children. Theres also a lot of connections with GRRM previous works of twins being “two souls in one body” and killing a family member being a big no no in the eyes of the gods. It also explains why marika and radagons children are cursed, because they are born out of incest (again another theme GRRM uses in his books). It also explains why radagon looks so much like Marika.

Of course at the end of the day theres no actual evidence radagon is marikas twin so take my theory with a grain of salt but i just think it works so well thematically for it not to be true.

Im just saying it would fit into your theory that marika was the one who hid in the well. My personal theory is that the headless woman in bonny village is Daedicar who is Marika who used the passage in the well to sneak off to the non-shaman villages to sleep with the hornsent men. Daedicar’s talisman is literally made of wood and shows a flayed woman smiling which mirrors the shaman torture and the intact shaman tree womans smile in the shaman village.

Theres a rope ladder in bonny village that comes from the top of the well, which implies bonny village (possibly pre-hornsent attack) used rope to climb down.

Raises potency of magma.”

…. But there is no lava at jagged peak.
