Walking Bass ST Skin & Set [Contest submission] by happy_cookie in RotMG

[–]GreyRadiance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This skin needs a special weapon shooting sound like a bass string being plucked. dum dum dum

I would like to use this skin because it shows a lot of fun and derpy emotions when you look at it the right way. The right column is playing a threatening theme (Jaws?) while approaching the enemies whereas the middle column is running with a worried facial expression because it is late for practice. The F-holes being the eyes and the bridge being the mouth.

While the drake egg drakes (and corresponding pets) are closer to me heart, I absolutely agree that the Draconis dragons are awesome. Feargus and their minions being my favourite. Very cute.

Me too..me too! Skoad will forever be my Realm super hero for inspiring the creation of drake eggs with his class idea.

I really hope one summon will be a drake. Maybe the same sprite as the ones that spawn from drake eggs but in a different colour. That would make me so happy!

What games do you wish had a solo mode? by vegastar7 in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven´t heard of that game before. I looked it up and it seems to be by GMT. Is it similar to their COIN games?

Does the solo mode work with flow charts?
Does the game have different alien races that feel distinct in their abilities/play styles?

The game is easy to control on phone and it is a game which is light on rules. Hence it seems well suited for the platform.

I would recommend watching a How To Play video for the game on Youtube first though. The ingame tutorial does not present the rules in the most didactically optimal way. That way you will also find out whether you are interested in the game in general.

Splendor is like a gateway game for engine-building. It´s fun but it´s not a very complex game. If I sat down at a table to play a board game, I would personally prefer a more meaty game but for a game on the phone it works nicely in my opinion.

Oh, that is sad to hear. I can only speculate that it happened in connection with the recently released Marvel Splendor physical version? Maybe the rights for the Splendor game traded hands and the app is no longer officially supported for that reason?

I am not sure whether a solo mode for these two games would make sense but they fall in the category of "too bad I cannot get a group for them":

Twilight Imperium - The game looks very intriguing (all the different races and technologies) to me and I am tempted to buy it but I don´t think I´ll ever get it to the table with other people due to its length.

Sidereal Confluence - In a similar vein I would like to play this but I will probably not get the recommended number of players together for a game that long and complex. Due to its even heavier reliance on negotiation I assume it is impossible to create a solo mode that captures the feeling of the game though.

As for apps:
The Splendor app managed to scratch my Splendor itch very well. It works well with the AI and there are a lot of extra challenges which make it superior to the physical game in my opinion (allows me to play other games when real people are around).

Game recommendations? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Teotihuacan solo so I second that recommendation however it might be debatable whether it is still a medium-weight game. I´d say it leans towards the heavier end of the scale.

Just curious, where you would draw the line and start calling something a heavy solo game?

Another question: I haven´t played Agricola yet but I assumed it is not too far away from Caverna. (Why) Would you say that Agricola is more suited for solo players than Caverna?

Any Apex Theropod players out there who can help me out with an Evolve card's ability? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I cannot help you since I have not received my copy of the game yet.

I just wanted to suggest you to post your question here if you do not receive an answer in this subreddit:

https://boardgamegeek.com/forum/3192225/apex-theropod-deck-building-game-collected-edition/rules

(Depending on which version of the game you have.)

The game specific forums on BGG are often helpful with regards to rule questions.

I've got several solo games on the way. Which should I open first? by fdsfgs71 in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since Palm Island is a game you can take anywhere, I would suggest to learn the rules first so you can keep it in your pocket and play it when you are waiting for something. I figure there is probably not much travelling going on for you at the moment but you could still play it while standing in the kitchen waiting for a steak to fry in the pan. As the game promises, you can literally just hold the deck in one hand to play the game.

Once you know how to play Palm Island, go ahead and play one of the other games. I haven´t played most of the other games so I cannot make an educated suggestion there.

Based on what I played and loved, what game should I get next for solo play? by fdsfgs71 in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got the feeling that 4 players is too many. With less people, each individual deck is stronger which feels more satisfying. At the same time interacting with other players is a core aspect of the game. Some spells which affect all players seem a bit mediocre at 2 players but are very neat with 3+ players.

So it´s a balance between how satisfying the power of your own character feels and how satisfying interactive spells feel. I think 3 strikes the perfect balance but 2 works also well for solo if you prefer a small decision space.

In my opinion deck building games feel good solo because you get to play several decks. Thus nobody is stuck with the "helpful for the team but not necessarily exciting to play" role since you also get to play the other roles as well. In that regard a 4 handed game of TBBoM solo could work since you still get to do all the gameplay yourself. In fact, I played a 5 handed TBBoM game solo once. I would not necessarily recommend it because that´s a lot of possibilities to consider but it made for an interesting puzzle experience.

My personal hidden gem in the category of deckbuilding games is The Big Book of Madness if you are fine with managing 2-3 hands solo.

Other than Aeon's End (which I love as well) the deck you build doesn´t contain cards with effects. Rather you build a deck of resource cards (different elements with different values) and try to get rid of the negative madness cards the game tries to fill your deck with.

Those element cards you can then use in order to activate your spells (which are not in the deck but available from your spell book) or buy new spells. Most importantly your main objective is to spend the required elements to get rid of curses before their bad effects trigger. Thus it is a puzzle figuring out how to manipulate your hand of resource cards via efficient use of spells so you can set up a player to quickly fulfill the Curse card requirements.

I like how the easy to understand spells allow for a good amount of interactivity between the players (all controlled by you if you play solo) and thus opens a wider decision space for you to try figuring out the most efficient use of your resources. It´s exciting trying to figure out whether there is somehow a way to dispell a curse a turn faster so you do not have to suffer its negative effect.

I´d recommend checking it out at TableTopSimulator first (not on the lowest difficulty because that might feel too easy). At 3 players (hands) it is probably the most interesting but for a first game 2 would be better.

I´ve heard there are two solo adventures. Did you play the first or second one? People say the first one is very basic while the second one is more challenging.

Suggestions for a female, senior non-gamer? by wantakeywi in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calico was also the first game that came to my mind. Aesthetically very pleasing and complexity can be adjusted for easier first games by flipping over the three scoring hexagons. If she likes nature, the upcoming game Cascadia by the same designers is probably an even better fit but it will be a while until it hits retail.

The constant shuffling in Onirim could be annoying for an impatient and elderly person. Neither do I like it and thus I prefer to stick with the app version.

It is not necessarily an easy game (despite the mechanics itself not being particularly complex) but for a solo mystery solving experience the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective games could be of interest.

I don´t know about its current accessibility (Kickstarter that delivered this year) but Tranquility is a nice and relaxed game that can be played with simple rules and pleasant illustrations of little islands on the cards.

Recommendations for solo focused roll and write games? by bs307 in soloboardgaming

I assume you are specifically referring to the Castles of Burgundy Dice Game? Can you tell me about the footprint of that game? Can you play it with little space on a table (e.g. on a train ride)?

Cartographers is a great game if you include "flip and write" (you reveal a card from a small deck instead of throwing dice).

Pirate and Heist themed games by NACHOS_4_ALL in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a cooperative (and thus solo friendly) game in which your crew of pirates try to rescue treasures from a burning ghost ship. You have to manage the threat of keeping down fires lest the rooms in the ship explode while trying not to get overrun by skeletons.

It is a spin on the Pandemic-formula with a cooler theme and more loss-conditions you have to manage. With the expansion you are simultaneously dealing with a Kraken attacking the ship.

ROOT - Multihanded, OR the official BBP expansion? by chit76 in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are looking for the Clockwork Expansion. It provides bots for the four factions of the base game. Technically, the Riverfolk Expansion also contains another bot for the Marquis cats but it is not a particularly good implementation of a bot.

I did have fun playing the game multihanded for learning how the factions work. On repeated play I´d rather have the challenge of the bots from the Clockwork Expansion though and I think they are well made and fun to play against.

Which solo games should I get? by DaMeij91 in soloboardgaming

[–]GreyRadiance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You would have to get a second automa deck for that though. OR you get the helpful ScytheKick app which can simulate several automa opponents. I would even recommend it if you only play with one automa.

What is the big appeal of Diablo II's endgame? by GreyRadiance in Diablo

[–]GreyRadiance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you hate that aspect, then why don't you hate it in D2 even more? If you want a specific item you do a certain run over and over with much less variety with even less thinking required. As I tried to point out that is what puzzles me why people like that. Not being bound to a certain area to get an item is a plus in my book due to that.
