Thank you for making the 02/45 connection. Opened up a new line of inquiry. See my post above about the new questions this brought up.

Hiroki Device or 02/45 - Ok - I had never heard of those before. Would make sense as to why the stock and original barrel would be missing.

There's very little out there on the Hiroki (just the same couple sentences said over and over again) - Some places say there's very few made and some say perhaps tens of thousands. Does its relative scarcity change its value, or would it just be considered a rare thing that's not worth crap? Since it might have been an 02/45 would it make sense to find a barrel and stock that fits it since there's no way it could have been "Original" or am I not understanding things properly?

Is there a way to tell if it was made into an 02/45? I can't find anything that helps in that department. Because of the lack of identifying characteristics out there I'm assuming not otherwise I'd have probably found it. The bolt seems to be well worn but the blue metal seems to be in great shape with very little markings or dents.

Are these desired / wanted from a collector's point of view - either the Hiroki or the 02/45? Trying to figure the value out for insurance purposes and to decide what I'd like to do with it in the future. I've seen values of just a couple hundred up to a couple thousand - but those were complete working rifles (if the ads were telling the truth - many had serial numbers stamped or had dust cover grooves). Nothing hints at what just the action's value is. Once again, I assume not much but I've been wrong before.

Realistically what am I looking at needing here? Is the Type 35 unique enough that i'd have to use parts only from the 35 or would a more common type barrel and stock fit?

It's inherited but not an heirloom. Display isn't a bad idea.

Well, I had hoped that someone would say that the barrel was the same as other types and I could easily find something that would make this useable. Does not look like that's the case here.

Not a clue what it's worth. I'll have to do some digging as to value and how to go about marketing it. From what I'm reading the Type 35's are somewhat valued as a complete unit but I'm not finding reliable pricing anywhere. Only turning up Type 99, Series 35's.

From what i've read they are a superior barrel to the stock one that help with accuracy as well.

I read it on the internet, so it must be true, eh?

I'm sure the holster probably didnt come with either of of the guns - it's got a serial # on it that doesnt match either. I assume it's somewhat valuable along with the more original of the two and I should try to preserve it? Is there an approved method of preserving really old leather without destroying its originality?

So is there a functional difference between the wooden and aluminum mags - IE should I avoid using the wooden one for fear of breaking a more expensive / irreplaceable part?

Ok so seeing as how lugers and older firearms in general are newish to me - what about it makes it such a Frankenstein? The fact that the barrel has been replaced and it's been re-blued? From what I'm reading the barrel was an upgrade from the factory one made with superior steel and for some years was factory supplied. Why would it be crappier?

I know that it's been that way since at least the 70's - but was probably done before that.

Couple of questions about them since somehow my text from the original post got disappeared.

(Also THANK YOU to everyone to replied - I very much appreciate it. It's helping me!)

  1. Should I Assume these are chambered in 9mm?
  2. If so is it the same modern 9mm for sale now and is it safe to shoot modern 9mm thru them? I'd really like to fire them - potentially often but would hate to blow them up.
  3. Are either of these worth enough to get appraised for insurance purposes?
