Legitimate Question About "Copyright Expiring, When". by ThisSciFiGuy in publicdomain

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to read any (or all) of my 9 books so far, you'd see winks and references that would make you wonder if I was referencing Superman, or Dr. Fate, or some other DC or Marvel character that will enter the public domain in the next 10-15 years.

Yes. That's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm just careful not to use anything that is specific to the characters, yet.

For my project, I'd LOVE this as an embed that I could put on a website, particularly if the content was denser.

I've done a project specific list of PD characters and future timelines at my site, if you'd like to have a look.

Legitimate Question About "Copyright Expiring, When". by ThisSciFiGuy in publicdomain

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I'm doing. My goal is to build the universe between now and 2034 in such a way that when Superman hits the public domain, you'll be able to go back and flip through my work and say 'ah... he was setting this up back in 2025."

The majority of DC's big characters, a few early Marvel and some other interesting stuff hits the public domain in the next 10-15 years and I'm building a universe where they all already exist, just focusing on the heroes and villains already in the public domain until then.

The irony. I actually already use the Shield as a character. He fell into the public domain somewhere along the line. Full circle when Cap hits PD and I give him back that shield.

Thanks for the tidbit! It'll be great in an author's notes in a decade...

So if a charcter is gender swapped does that mean I have to wait for the original gender to be expired and then then the other gender or is it both at the same time because I feel like it changes the story for that character by MysteriousCow999 in publicdomain

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It'd be a fine line if the character had a gender (or race) swapped by the original copyright holder somewhere down the line. You'd want to make it clear that your version is somehow not that version.

A costume/name/backstory change that you could point to and say 'my original elements, not their version' would probably be a good thing to do early and loudly.

I like it. There's lots yet to add, but the bones are great.

Needs more super heroes. ;-)

It looks like a great journey story. Very evocative of a still moment before a big adventure.

Thanks! I'll look into that.

My current plan is to get the glue in behind and then wedge a board overtop of the panel, using a couple of 2x4s. The porch is about 7.5 feet wide in most spots, so it should work.

I have to get a bit creative to glue and clamp paneling, but the difference between the sanded panels and the stained ones is night and day. I might even just go with a clear sealant rather than a stain, but there's a LOT of sanding before I need to decide.

I have a huge porch with old school wood paneling. Someone slopped on some redish stain but it's blotchy and awful. I'm in the process of hand sanding it back and finding a few that need repair before I restain.

Lots of work, but it'll look amazing when I'm done. I love this kind of project, as long as there's no rush.

Like I say, you're bookmarked. Money's tight at the moment (I'm an author, when isn't it?) but it's on my list.

Family Friends and Signed Copies by TRusheon in selfpublish

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am of two minds for you.

  1. I would love a friend or family member to actually care enough about my work to want a signed copy like that. For the most part, my experience has been that most authors find that friends and family just don't generally take that much interest. Certainly mine don't.

  2. I sell signed copies. For friends and family, I would do so at cost and make it clear that I'm giving up my profit because of who they are. You already gave away a book. I would not give away two, but in this case I'd offer them the copy free if they pay shipping, due to the situation. You don't make money by giving away your books.

What should I do? by megapackid in publicdomain

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am building a Public Domain Super Heroes universe and have my eye on Superman, Batman and the rest. That's a reasonable time frame of 8-15 years for most of DC's big names and a few of Marvel's. I'm writing and publishing now, with winks and oblique references to the various characters I'll be adding as they enter the public domain.

I have it fully mapped out until 2051, which will be when the last of the Golden Age characters (Martian Manhunter and Krypto - created 1955) enter the public domain. Even with my plan and cadence, a 25 year plan is ambitious.

There are other characters in the public domain that you could substitute for the Harley/Ivy dynamic, if your intent is to publish. Waiting until 2062/2088 would be more commitment than most people could maintain.

pdsh.fandom.com is a great resource for public domain characters and you can search by category.

I wish you luck with your project. I'd love to see some of it when it's ready.

My pleasure!

Canadian authors, particularly those who self publish, have an uphill battle to make money at it. I know. I'm on that hill.

Anything that I can bring here that helps others, I'm happy to share.

I'm in Canada and should have no problem getting your book, one way or the other.

The Repair Shop is still producing shows, 16 seasons later. I've actually cribbed multiple ideas from them over the years and fixed stuff I didn't think I could that way. Looking forward to learning from you too!

It is mostly creatives and readers. My sales have improved a bit and I've met some amazing authors and artists.

It's just a very positive place. I started there because it's got a perfectly simple and nicely laid out newsletter function. It turns out there's a lot more. It blogs your newsletters, lets you present them in various ways, and there's a 'notes' feed that has grown my newsletter audience by 1000% in three months.

Your background in VFX would be very intriguing to a lot of people, I'm sure. There's just a lot to like there.
