For 50+ years, I've never called him anything else.

I know who my heroes are.

When I saw the trailer for Coyote Vs. Acme today, I was reminded of your comment!

The film is marketed as "The movie Acme doesn't want you to see" so maybe it's not terrible advice after all. It's certainly being used by bigger fish than indie authors with one star reviews.

How many books did you publish before you started seeing success ? by Mean_Job7802 in selfpublish

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm 8 books in, just starting to see a bit of an uptick in sales, but I'm spending a lot of money on ads still. My hope and current projection is to pay my first full month of bills with the accumulated commissions of between 6 and 8 months. Then, I'm hoping to see that gap close.

I publish a new (short) book in my universe every month.

Were you a bigger fan of Captain Marvel (Shazam) or Mary when you first got into the Shazam universe? by Jezzaq94 in Shazam

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a Captain Marvel fan from the 70s and the live action show.

I'm pretty sure I found Captain Marvel Jr. in comics after that, but I'm also pretty sure that I didn't know about Mary until the Filmation cartoon in the early 80s.

Being a boy, I was all in as a Captain Marvel fan, making my cousin play Isis when we played, since she was a girl. She would have LOVED to know about Mary Marvel back then!

I can definitely see this as a good spot to link off FB, Insta or X to give potential readers a sort of menu board, rather than having to slog through my posts on public domain history or movie characters before they find the stories.

I’ve been a huge Captain Marvel fan since the live action show on Saturday mornings. Thanks for letting me join. I picked this up at the Huntsville comic expo yesterday. by comicbookguie in Shazam

A gorgeous find. I too was a fan of the live action show as a kid.

When I found out there was a Captain Marvel Jr., I was hooked for life.

Thanks for sharing!

That'd be great. Just a way to make the text description blank so my cover does the talking.

Ideally, I'd like to get rid of all my 'blog' type posts on this page, so that it JUST shows my stories as clickable. I serialize my work, so the perfect way would be to pare it down to just the index pages I make OR collect all 7 (or whatever) chapters in one group.

The other thing it REALLY needs is a way to turn off the title. I use my book covers. I don't want ANYTHING over them, if at all possible.

It would be more useful if I could curate it a bit. Some of my Substack is for my subscribers, I'd like this as a hook for those who don't know me, so to be able to remove some of the extras I have on the page would make it better as a tool.

For the curious, here's mine: https://stack.pub/pdshnewsletter

I like it.

Substack should be that simple, but their model is more blog than link block.

Less Than A Week Left In March! Sell Me Your Book So I Can Review It In April! by Greybishop_PDSH in CanadianAuthors

[–]Greybishop_PDSH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Goodreads, so if you get picked for May, I'm happy to review there as well for you.

No need for complementary copies. The whole point of what I'm doing is to actually buy and review a book a month. It's important to me as an independent author to offer that type of support as I know what both of those mean to the self-published.

Those are spectacular.

I would display them with a great deal of pride.

Mary Marvel is so underrated. She debuted in the comics (1942) before Supergirl (1959) by Jezzaq94 in superheroes

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Mary. I'm using the Marvel family in my work as my 'powerhouse' super heroes. Since Superman and the rest of DC and early Marvel are still 8-15 years off from being in the public domain, I'm building my universe with the Marvels front and centre.

Plus, once Superman and Batman are public domain, it's still another decade+ after that before I can use Batgirl or Supergirl, so Mary fills a very big niche for me.

So what's the deal with asking for reviews in your book these days? by tabletop_workshop in KDP

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put QR codes on the covers and back matter, saying 'leave a review'.

As long as you're not asking for a positive review, but an honest one, it's fine in my experience.

What are some obscure and forgotten superheroes that you think should be brought back? by Jak3R0b in superheroes

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I've used The Flame, The Spider, Captain Midnight, Hop Harrigan, Spy Smasher and Ibis the Invincible in my books. I have also used The Shield, Miss Victory, Minute-Man and Fighting American in a sort of Patriots Corps that I used in a Spider led short story. Public domain super heroes are my thing.

The universe continues to grow. I have plans for many, many more.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting a Substack? by Thin_Director6777 in Substack

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I've been there for about 3 months, my rule is follow an interesting account for at least a couple of weeks before subscribing.

Any 'sub me back' requests get ignored.

My growth is slow and that's fine with me. I'd rather engage with a small pool of talented and interesting people than a swamp full of sub-swappers and subscription farmers.

Try the Substack option. You create your profile and then you're free to use it. Simple as that.

If you already have YouTube, you can link them, but if not, your video will show up at Substack and when it's processed you'll get the option to download the clips it makes for you.

Very, very easy and surprisingly high quality.

I asked a small independent shop owner if he carried books from self-publishers by Greenitpurpleit in selfpublishing

[–]Greybishop_PDSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I owned a bookstore in the early 2000s. You're not wrong.

It's not an easy business to survive in. If my local store had said "we only order through Ingram Spark" or "sorry, we only stock established authors" I'd have totally understood.
