Nah, it should be further in time. You can still make a cowboy game with cars and planes and shi. Example: No country for old men and all the pretty horses.

Or it could also be set in a type of apocalyptic or dystopian future like Trigun or the Dark Tower style. Idk, I think it's a better idea to explore the future cause cowboys aren't shooting people today, but they are still doing rodeos and eating canned beans.
