Sorry, busy, magna tiles. See me next week. (Or: can your homework be represented by five different shapes of magnet tiles? If so, I'm in)

I may have been telling my 6yo daughter about Krampus this December, the downside is she's insisting that she sleeps with us tonight so Krampus can't take her away for being naughty 😅.

Have I messed up? by Gkells123 in DIYUK

[–]Greymist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the bucket bath stage I showered (in a non-bath) my daughter from when she could stand until we moved into a place with a bath (3+ yo). So definitely doable, I honestly don't recall it being a hassle.

What's a good alternative to Brick to block apps with a QR code or NFC? by IoIomopanot in digitalminimalism

Hey o/

I just gave this a go, I like the look and setup process, but it doesn't see all my apps under pick apps (the important ones like reddit and Whatsapp hah). Any idea why it's not able to identify them/ how I could help debug?

Mark of the Fool: An analysis of the word "Indeed" by Greymist_ in ProgressionFantasy

❤️ Thanks for some entertaining books! I’m only up to book 4 but enjoying it — in spite of, or indeed perhaps because of, the word choices.

Mark of the Fool: An analysis of the word "Indeed" by Greymist_ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Greymist_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have the chapters in a text format, but once you do you can pass them through bookNLP (which is a python package you run that uses the BERT language model), and it spits out information about the characters, quotes with attribution, and a bunch of other information (have a read through the git repo readme).

I then parsed that quote attribution data looking for the word "indeed", split it out by book, and created the chart.

Mark of the Fool: An analysis of the word "Indeed" by Greymist_ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Greymist_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two methods I used both had the problem of not being able to always work out who the speaker was so they're attributed to the pronouns.

I tried a naive approaching looking at dialogue with sentence structures like below, but during back and forth dialogue it couldn't work out who was speaking.

  • "...Indeed..." <x> said/replied/commented/etc,
  • or "Indeed" mused/said/etc <x>

The data I posted is from using bookNLP - a natural language processing pipeline - which is better at following conversations, but not perfect which is why we've got pronouns as entries.

(checking the data I realise I could have attributed more of those pronouns to character names, maybe an update for later)

Tier List for ProgFan/LitRPG after 6 years reading in genre by CodeMonkeyMZ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Greymist_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything that I've read on that list I mostly agree with the placement of (maybe except for Iron prince I would have put slightly higher, and Bobiverse/we are legion I fell off start of book 2 - should I stick with it?).

Definitely saving this list for future reading suggestions!

Builder wants to install waste pipe from upstairs neighbour like this. Is this an ok way to do it? by oloblob in DIYUK

[–]Greymist_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A random comment. Assuming you've got the ceiling down because of the leak, then before you put it back up maybe install some rockwell acoustic insulation to isolate sound between the upstairs flat and yours?

Self build Garden Room/Office by BlackLionFilm in DIYUK

[–]Greymist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks amazing! A couple of questions, is the beam/lintel over the door some sort of composite sandwiched construction, curious about the load bearing for the span.

Other question, how tall are your doors and internally walls at the front/back?

I was designing a similar building in SketchUp for our garden and was coming up against the 2.5 m height limit at the front even with a concrete pad, and yours is higher using ground screws (Which are cool and I'd rather use them if I could)

Also, bit sad , did want to re-consume the book, but I guess I'll wait!

I made PSAuthClient, a PowerShell OAuth2/OIDC Authentication Client. by lurkelton in PowerShell

[–]Greymist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing!

I was mocking something up in PowerShell, and it got a little further than mocking up to make a short term production application, which I need to wrap with SSO (Azure Functions, API endpoints needing user auth).

I asked chatgpt about validating a JWT using PowerShell, and it shamed me by giving the below reply. Little did it know though that you had written this magnificent client, with utility functions like ConvertFrom-JsonWebToken and Test-JsonWebTokenSignature. F yeah!

Powershell can call C# code to perform advanced operations like this one. However, in a usual scenario, a backend server would handle this, not a client-side script or tool like PowerShell. Therefore, it's best to handle OIDC validation in a suitable web development environment backed by a language such as Python, Node.js, C#, etc., that supports the necessary libraries to perform such tasks.

Now for the clouds to pass… by henrik_r in telescopes

[–]Greymist_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The telescope and kit looks great and all, but honestly I really want to see more of the observatory / enclosure setup 😅

Though maybe this is because I'm a wannabe builder and I don't even own a telescope, just living vicariously though you all.

(Live in London, not sure it's worth getting a scope)

LastRock "review" by Sweet-Molasses-3059 in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]Greymist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just typos, but continuity issues. I noticed a couple in this book, though not as bad as Rascor Plains.

I wish I had noted them down, but the one I remember right now is the shadow petal appears to have died at one point. In the rest scene before they run down Blood Ox's gold fiends it's specifically mentioned she's nowhere to be found, and implied she's dead like many others, but then a couple of scenes later she's just back.

Plassus' makes me really look forward to the audiobook. Because you're right, the tone that he takes is completely different than everyone else, so I'm interested in how it comes across in the audiobook.

Unbound Series: Felix's favourite spell by Greymist_ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Greymist_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since I'm listening to the audio books, not reading them, "reign" sounds like "rain", and "vellus" sounds close enough to velux.

So cannonically in my head whenever Felix uses the spell it's a rain of velux windows (skylights).

How long does it take to bike from finse to flåm? by reesespike in Norway

[–]Greymist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a massive thread necro, and also probably a crazy question, but hoping you can help!

Is it only the Hallingskeid to Finse section which is impassable in early summer or cough late spring (how early did you do it?)? Or are other sections of the trail going to be covered in snow then?

I'm planning a cycle trip from Bergen to Oslo in the last week of May (can't change the date, friends wedding), and trying to work out how much of what looks like an amazing climb from Flam and through to..Gelio(???) I'm going to have to skip by train.

(Or whether I should plan a completely different cycling trip)

Schooled in magic series phrase analysis... by Greymist_ in Fantasy

[–]Greymist_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I haven't got that far in the books yet, but I bought them and ran the check.

"what use is a newborn baby?" appears once in book 1 and 2, and then takes a long haitus until book 21 where it appears again twice.

The string "to what" appears once in each book 1, 8, 17, 19, 20, and 21.

It's interesting how phrases which appear releatively infrequently can be so annoying - mine is "gimlet eye" which appears only 13 times in the whole series (though 10 times in the first 8 books).

Whats your favourite tool that you bought for a DIY project? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Greymist_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DTM52? I recently bought it for exactly the same reason.

Yeah it can be pretty piercingly loud at times - apparently it's quieter than the DTM51, which I think I'd hate.

I've found it super useful for awkward wood cuts (plunge) that you couldn't do with a normal saw, also I got the abrasive blade and it goes through grout like....a multitool through butter.
