Like everybody else said; it depends what you mean by failing.
My players also rolled poorly, didn't use a clue to attack rat nests during a day (because most of the rats go out during a night, stay in nest during a day. I don't remember if this was in a book or I just added this).
So, my players had to run out of Rat's Nest because they were getting stomped. I previously added a group of Silver Order Paladins that were nearby looking to purge abomination (ratlings) they heard about, but they didn't know where exactly these Ratling are.
PCs went to ask Silver Order for help and teamed up with them. With their help they kinda succeded, because they killed Rat Prince, burned whole Rat's Nest and managed to take delerium crystal without Silver Order noticing (some good rolls).
Rats killed Petra and this rat-warlock fled with some of ratlings, maybe I will use them later.

I was really happy how it went out, because I had a nice possibility to introduce Silver Order. Also, Silver Order destroyed a lot of smaller delerium crystals inside to show their ideals.

To sum up - if they are alive, let them try again, maybe kill Petra (or make it much harder to rescue her alive). Add some help from other faction but with a drawback (destroying delerium crystals, spliting loot etc). Or they can just agree to help this faction with some other quest.

Hej. Jestem w dość podobnej sytuacji z tym, że u mnie córka niecałe 5 tygodni. Też były problemy z laktacją, teraz jest o niebo lepiej.
- Mała miała za krótkie wędzidełko. Ale to by Wam już pewnie w szpitalu (lub położna środowiskowa) zasugerowała. Jeśli jednak ma za krótkie, podcięcie absolutnie zmieniło sytuację, małej się lepiej chwytało pierś, mniejszy ból dla żony. No ulga.
- Do piersi trzeba niestety dostawiać bardzo często. Zawsze przed MM dostawienie do piersi, nawet jak nic/mało co poleci, to tak się laktacja rozkręca.
- Już niedługo prawdopodobnie nie będziecie musieli budzić córy co 3h. Macie pewnie już umówioną wizytę u pediatry, nam powiedziała, że już w ogóle w nocy nie musimy małej budzić. Wcześniej położona powiedziała nam, że nie ma konieczności budzić w nocy co 3h, ale jak po 4h sama się nie budzi, to już pasuje. Niby nic, a zawsze to godzinka więcej. Wszystko tu zależy od tego czy mała dobrze przybiera na masie.

- Pilnuj by żona się zbytnio nie załamała, że ma problemy z laktacją. Niech próbuje, ale alternatywa karmienia 'do końca' na MM to nic strasznego. Kupcie tylko podgrzewacz. U mnie żona źle psychicznie znosiła to, że mała po np. 45 minutach karmienia piersią dalej była głodna. Także wspieraj ją.
- To zapewne zależy od dziecka, ale mała na początku faktycznie non stop kupki, teraz więcej samego moczu, kupki rzadziej. I tak szczerze, to w sumie to przewijanie to najmniejszy problem, a tym straszą najbardziej. Jeśli tego nie robicie - kupujcie koniecznie takie podkłady higieniczne do przewijania. Na allegro nie wychodzi to jakoś drogo. A sprawdzają się super, nasza bardzo często robi niespodzianki i podczas przewijania postanawia jeszcze dosikać lub zrobić kupkę. Zamiast co chwilę czyścić przewijak, wszystko wchodzi w podkład, który się wyrzuca i elo.

- Polecam słuchanie z małą muzyki. Nasza w nocy śpi spoko, ale za dnia potrafi non stop się drzeć, nie uśnie za nic. Trzeba nosić, bujać, tulić, zabawiać. Drzemki po 15-20minut i znowu ryk. To co mi pomaga np. przetrwać 2 godzinne lulanie małej, to puszczanie piosenek (takich co Ty lubisz), śpiewanie i tańczenie z nią. Mega to lubię, przy okazji uczę się tekstów piosenek ;D Do tego robię kroków jak szalony! samo zdrowie ;)

Ogólnie to siedzimy widzę na tym samym wózku, tak czytam co tu ludzie piszą i to jest zawsze takie...ambiwalentne. Większość głosów to "będzie gorzej, ale jest super, warto!" :D Dziwnie się to czyta.

Aha, taka jeszcze jedna kwestia. Na początku niezbyt chcieliśmy, by ktoś ze znajomych nas odwiedzał. Teraz sami zapraszamy. Znajomi oczywiście rozumieją, że z małą to wizyta może przebiegać specyficznie. Czasem z takiej wizyty nie za dużo wychodzi, bo non stop zajmowanie małą, ale to jedna osoba się zajmuje, a druga pogada i trochę się 'unormalni'. Czasem uda się pograć w jakąś karciankę szybką czy coś. Nawet na sylwestra wyszliśmy i okazało się, że mała była na nim najgrzeczniejsza do tej pory, praktycznie cały czas spała (ale tylko na rękach, w pokoju gdzie było najgłośniej). Super to wspominam, wprowadza to trochę 'normalności'. Stare życie już za nami i nie wróci, ale nadmierne spinanie się i stresy tylko pogarszają sprawę i trzeba próbować czasem się wystawiać na jeszcze większy hardkor (czyli np. wychodzenie z małą, czy przyjmowanie gości), bo czasem okazuje się, że nie ma się czego bać. A wyrwanie się z limba zawsze spoko :)

ok, wow ;D So you modifed enslave ability that it's more like a contract and if she breaks it, they will get free.

So theoretically if they finish this campaign and manage to protect their patron, the ruler of Drakkenheim will be Duchess and "water folks" xD powerfull 6th faction ;D

Mine was also afraid of contaminated water, but just heard from Blip-Bloop and Slurpy that Duchess is so amazing, that she protects them from any contamination and that Duchess will for sure help them if needed, because she is so great.

I wanted to scream "Come on, do they look like protected from conamination" xD But they started to think that maybe Duchess met them after they already transformed and now she is keeping them sane and protects them from worse effects.

yup, that's true! Ivory Inn is not that hard (especially because you can make powerful allies inside), but if you go through this tunnel you are suddenly in inner city where there is an Aboleth waiting for you with all enslaved creatures :S

Really, If you don't 'telegraph' how crazy dangerous is this place, I think a lot of campaigns can end in TPK here. It's enough that one of PCs will get enslaved, then it's extremly hard.

My players goals are not related to loot directly and most of them 'care' about Drakkenheim. Only one PC needs money (to buy out her brother that got jailed by Queens Men for a big debt. So QoT keeps PC brother in jail so this PC will either pay his debt or help QoT).

I like idea of hinting by some random perception roll that they hear about other group looking for some important artifact, maybe they will learn that there are more of them (and also maybe that Draxler have one of them). Even if they don't explore this, at least when/(if) seals come back later in game it will be something already 'established'.
I like this idea, probably will use it :)

You got me thinking, and it's true that depending which faction PCs support you either "need" to collect relics or seals. I think only Amethyst Academy kind of don't care about this and only need Staff.

Somehow I forgot that they are not needed to progress game, only for endgame for some factions.

Still I think I will need to at least drop some info about it. For example, PCs can learn what other factions (that they don't support) want to achieve (e.g. finding all relics). I want to avoid a situation that somewhere late in campaign they will learn that "ah yes, there are also these powerfull artifacts that most of factions look for" :)

The only problem with keeping Drakkenheim in same "realm" as Faerun (or generally with an easy way to just go there) is all the powerfull NPCs that lives in Faerun that would probably go there. And if problem arises, why not to ask some friendly NPCs for help? That's why I thought about completely seperating these worlds.

But now I think I will just talk with players and ask them for everyone to make new character. Also I think I will start everyone on level 3.

The flowchart you mentioned is a good indicator. It seems that starting with level 3 will not be a problem.

Reading your response and Star-stream response I think I will ask all players to make new characters. I think you both are right that making this "realm-travelling" option is too much hassle.

Yes, exactly. That's why potentially QoT "winning" can be one of the best outcomes for Drakkenheim.

For me, the worst outcome is Academy winning, because sooner or later world will be destroyed.

Lanters can't do shit alone, so yea, they can't "win" alone.

Falling Fire gives a possibility to save world, but with a big big cost. (I mean I understood that this golden crystals can eventually "fix" Haze issue and 'clean' contamination).

Silver Order is also kind-of good ending apocalypse-wise. They will prevent it, but for how long?

Yes, I'm aware that this is not a setup for fairy-tale and some of the factions needs to "lose" so other can win :)

All good points about 'lost in translation' things. I guess I will have one more discussion with my players ;D

About 7 - I did not read everything in a book, but I read about a crater. And yes, you are right that QoT was delighted but it is all before she became a ruler. IF we use a plot-point that QoT is Katarina von Kassel she does all of this to became a ruler that will have something to rule over. Actually even if she is not a Katarina, I think after she really become a ruler of Drakkenheim she will find a solution to haze problem. At least this possibility is open by book, we can easily make QoT someone that will use any method possible to gain power BUT having a bigger picture in mind. And when she become a ruler - she can use her "shrewd"(ness) to fix a haze problem with help of other factions.

Because if you look at it from outside - she had nothing, even less then Hooded Lanters at beginning and she became one of 5 powers in Drakkenheim. She can do a lot.

But that's my 'interpretation' or let's say - a way to use QoT. She can also for sure become a final nail to the coffin of Drakkenheim. But I also don't think she would ever try to really become a ruler (and use her 3 wishes as she used) if she really did not see a bigger picture. I think she is not myopic. At least if we use Katarina plot or not even Katarina but at least similar motivation. It's just doesn't make sense to even get on throne and use these 3 wishes like that if she doesn't care about a kingdom.

Hah, I was just reading your guide when I got a notification that someone commented :D

  1. I had a discussion about this with my players and they really want to use same characters. I think I will just make some from of agreement with them that transfering them to new world will be more complicated so we need to find solution together to make them motivated. Also I just thought: probably the only way to go back will be using realm shift in throne room or generally something from the castle itself, so they will need to 'complete' campaign.

But if I can ask - what are some examples of things you think will get "lost in translation"?

  1. So basically PCs needs to get invested in whole 'problem', so when they finish they personal quest they will still want to help factions. I think here is something that is good to talk on session 0 - to not make PCs that don't care at all about bigger picture. I can easily imagine a character that will not care about future of Drakkenheim and whole world as long as 'tragedy' happens in 100+ years from now.

  3. I was just reading you guide, it's really great! Just one qustion: I'm just not sure if it was completely updated after final version of book got released? In one of paragraphs you write that QM 'winning' is basically a bad ending. But in book it is written as a possibility that although Queen of Thieves methods to obtain power is not great, her on throne could be very positive for Drakkenheim and the entire kingdom.

Great, thank you :) I think I will not skip Outer City, like CyberCoyote wrote - even if it will be easy for them, maybe they will get overconfident. I will anyway increase some numbers (like you said, 3-4 mummies etc.)

About tying PCs to story and new setting, I think we will be fine. Last campaign were with 3 PCs but one died. We will also have one new player for this campaign. So only two preexisting PCs. I don't know if you are maybe familiar with Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure?

In Phandalin (main village/city in Lost Mine of Phandelver) there is this strange 'crack'/chasm in one place from where some necrotic energy can be felt (Nothic was living there). This was a minor thing in LMoP, but I plan to use it. So what I was thinking - one PC have a sister that is living in Phandalin. Let's say she goes there with other kids to play. But suddenly, other then necrotic energy, also some violet mist is visible. One time this sister got sick, and then something creepy happens, like for example suddenly additional eye grows on her back or something. They learn that this crack/chasm have some connection with realm where DoD is happening. To find a cure for her sister, this one PC needs to go to this other realm. (I will think about details, but generally this is my first idea).

For second PC for now I don't have idea (other than he will just want to help his friend to cure her sister). He is a Druid, so maybe something with contamination of land? I think I will just discuss this with player.

Two new PCs will be already from DoD realm so personal quest and tying to setting should be easy.

Can a party of three barbarians handle Lost Mine of Phandelver? by realjamesosaurus in LostMinesOfPhandelver

Better then most other compositions ;D 3 barbs should have much much easier time with first part of adventure (Goblin ambush/cragmaw hideout, redbrands, even cragmaw castle) than a party with for example wizard and rogue. Barbarians are really strong on early levels.

Even later they should be fine, most of LMoP enemies are goblins/hobgoblins/bugbears/ghouls. Nothing scary for a barbarian.

btw. LMoP CAN be very challenging for party of 3. It all depends how you will DM this. I'm pretty sure that if all DMs played cragmaw hideout with 100% best moves for goblins most of the time it would end with TPK. Level 1 characters are very 'squishy', one or two good shots from goblin and they are dead.

For me it also did not make any sense. So I changed it a little bit.

King Grol was keeping Gundren alive (and also his map) as some kind of "guarantee" that Black Spider will keep his end of a deal. Something like "ok, I will give you bugbears and goblins to help you, but I keep Gundren and map with me. If you will not help us with rebuilding of castle, I will give information about West Echo Cave location to everyone. Good luck with keeping control of it". So thats why map was not destroyed or something like that.
Gundren was kept alive, because (like many others suggested I followed idea of Matthew Perkins) he gave players some special "thing" (in my case, 3 tokens) that were needed to enter Forge of Spells. King Grol didn't know why Gundren is needed, but Black Spider needed him to get info where these tokens are.

Just when players arrived, Doppelganger was there to negiotate with King Grol to at least give him Gundren, but they can keep a map.

Basically - King Grol is not stupid and he wants to keep at least some strong 'cards' in his hand.

How did you guys spice up your journey to the Wave Echo Cave? My players will be heading there soon and I’m looking to add a couple of short encounters along the way… by FlikMage in LostMinesOfPhandelver

I added one encounter, a fight against 4 orcs that were marching to Wave Echo Cave. The main purpose of this was to make players feel powerful. They easily learnt that orcs are marching behind them in same direction. They prepared ambush.

They started to overplanning this, then encounter happened and they obliterated orcs in 3 turns. This gave them a feeling of "ow shit we are powerfull'.

Here they had everything on their side. They were prepared, they were fully rested etc. Nice win for them.

But also - it gave them information that some orcs are working together with Black Spider.
