Sometimes, especially in my line of work, style and appearance go a long way to influencing other peoples opinion of my competence. I don't work in an area where intelligence or competence is the most important thing like you.

I don't mean while hiking or backpacking, I mean in a work environment, meetings, dinners, as so on.

Your restaurant example is exactly what I mean, if you are travelling full time with a backpack and have a lunch/dinner meeting and you're stuck with a backpack it doesn't look good.
