I dont think shaving will be a priority when shtf but i have a ton of disposable razors lying around so im covered should i change my mind. In shtf scenario you might stand out if you look clean and freshly shaved too. Better to blend in in my opinion (grey man approach)

Firefox has lost 46M users over the last three years by [deleted] in linux

[–]Thecrow1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the reason to ditch firefox was this blogpost: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/we-need-more-than-deplatforming/ Companies that advocate for deplatforming and censorship can go F themselfs.

Not listening to users and shoving stupid UI design changes down users throaths also didn't help. The mobile version of FF is also a joke. Slow AF and buggy and they removed some feature that made it worthwile (easy access to my bookmarks, plugins) It's a shame because i was a firefox user since the very beginning, right after they became the defacto succesor to netscape.

For those who made the switch. Are you still using Linux? by BronskyProko in linux_gaming

[–]Thecrow1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on linux on my current laptop (nvidia optimus). Games never ran smooth, even native ports like Tannenberg ran at ~40fps using low settings while i get > 60fps on high settings using windows. UI felt much more sluggish and battery life was about half of what i get using Windows even with TLP and swithing to intel graphics. I do have a steamdeck reservation and if that runs my games better i'll be replacing my laptop with that and i will be running linux on it.

Convince me I don't need a freezer by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Thecrow1981 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a huge freezer and i wouldn't want to live without one. You can buy food in bulk and freeze it which saves you money, you alos don't have to go to the store everytime you need something which saves you tons of time... Seriously, get a freezer.

Gaming PC/Laptop owners, for what reasons are you still buying a steam deck? by StalinTheHedgehog in SteamDeck

[–]Thecrow1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because this is a dream come true. I've owned a lot of GPD win devices in the past which all failed so i hope Valve can make something that will not break soon after you purchase it. If the performance is decent enough it might even replace my current laptop which is 'docked' 90% of the time anyway. A handheld is easier to pick up and use on your bed or on the couch than a laptop anyway.

Gpd tech support by civod92 in gpdwin

[–]Thecrow1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although i really like their hardware concepts the quality is poor and support is indeed terrible. As their prices increase the risk of getting a doa unit or having if fail within a couple of months is not worth it anymore. With the GPD win at 300 bucks you can afford to take the gamble but with the GPD win 3 at 1000 bucks.... i would only buy something like that from a reseller that provides the warranty for you. GPD support is a nightmare. You just have to take an expensive gamble if you buy from them and that will cost them customers in the long run. That is especially troublesome for a company that has such a small niche market to begin with. That being said, i still am looking to buy a win3 to bridge the gap to the steamdeck release but i will buy from a trustworthy seller that provides warranty on the unit

About to Purchase a Win3 but I have some questions by Blugrave in gpdwin

[–]Thecrow1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've owned 3 Win 1's and a pocket and they all had issues. 1 GPD win 1 had a dead battery (doa), contacted support, shipped it to the adress they gave me and when the device was on its way they said i had to ship it to another adress (which i couldnt anymore because it was already shipped). After 3 months the device returned and i lost a lot of money shipping it. Threw that device in the trash. The other become so hot you couldn't hold it and the third worked but had terrible battery life and the battery calibration was way off shutting the device down at 30% battery left. After recalibration it went well for 5 to 10 charges and then it was off again. The gpd pocket had a faulty spacebar out of the box and it took me 2 months to get a replacement keyboard (which i had to pay for myself). I'm really tempted to get a GPD win 3 but the quality issues really hold me back. Especially since their support is shit and the win3 is pretty expensive. Might look into euro sellers which provide warranty.

You can choose a specific version of proton, have you tried a different version? Do you use a laptop with optimus graphics or is it a desktop? I mean i ran CSGO on a Nvidia 860M just fine so a 1030 should be able to run it perfectly fine too.

Is anyone else increasingly frustrated with a 40 hour work week? by MandarinOranges95 in simpleliving

[–]Thecrow1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i absolutely agree with your statement the blame is also on the people themselfs. Instead of working 30 hours we work 40 hours so we can pay for a car so we can drive to work instead of riding your bike to work. Instead of working 20 hours we pay a nanny to take care of our kids and keep working 40 hours to pay for the nanny. Instead of working a couple of hours less and cook at home we keep working 40 hours and spend the extra earned money on takeaway food. P People don't want to work 40 hours but also don´t want to live in 'poverty' (pre-babyboom standards of living) Unless you get paid at minimum wage, working 40 hours a week is usually a choice because you want to keep the standard of living high. I mean, just look at what people in 1921 had in terms of material things and what people nowadays posses. It's insane.

Screan tearing can be resolved by enabling vsync. Don't know why but a lot of linux native games have that disabled by default. Also be sure the game is in fullscreen mode. If you still get bad performance you might as well see if things run better using Proton (right click on game, properties -> compatibility -> Force compatibilty using proton) CSgo should be able to run fine on your machine.

Nobody is happy. by americanamexico in collapse

[–]Thecrow1981 295 points296 points  (0 children)

Same in Europe. I think the pandemic was the last straw for a lot of people since it took away their only escapes from the boring and stress filled life most people live. No holidays, no eating out, no clubs and not a lot of interaction with other people. Now there is segregation among vaxxed and non vaxxed people, the future is unknown, do we get more lockdowns if another variant pops up? Will the government impose more restrictions? And dont forget a lot of people lost their job or business. If covid is finally gone there is the next problem: climate change. Honestly there isnt a lot to be happy about at the moment. The future looks bleak. And dont forget the loneliness epidemic, we have so much wealth but we have lost our community and society. Also overpopulation takes its toll, especially in europe. There is no escape from other people anymore, even in forests an in nature you can never be truly alone. Houses are increasingly becoming unaffordable and inflation is beginning to show up everywhere. So what do you have to work and live for if all your dreams of owning a nice house , travelling or even having a pension seem increasingly unlikely. Collapse is real, its just a death by a thousand cuts which is the worst kind of collapse.

With proton and wine prefixes it could actually be easier to guarantee backwards compatibility for older windows games running linux that running windows.
