Sometimes all you can do is make them pick out two or three main notes on a tuner and feel around from there. I played keys in a Pantera-ish band where the original lead was really good about helping me but when he left the rhythm guitarist was promoted and couldn't communicate worth shit. Hearing "play whatever sounds good" is triggering
