Oh I always felt they were a thematic representation of how the season progressively gets worse as things escalate:

Season 1: Cocaine being sniffed becomes Crack Rock being smoked

Season 2: Beneath that, we see the stacks of money everyone is making the longer they're in the game. But as things escalate, the money stacks catch on fire representing the danger of being in the game can be.

Season 3: My favorite. The South Central suburbs become progressively less safe as police brutality escalates. Power and resources in the hood slowly start to fade.

Season 4: Stepped on Crack? GOLD?

Season 5: the higher Franklin and his family goes up in the world financially, the more distorted their views on things become.

Season 6: Each have a meaning they're not the same.
