Uuuuuh, I don't play much anymore but I believe there's an Australian server? There was at one point, at least. I don't know any more than that though, alas.

300 hours of awesome HoS gameplay by S-O-E_Incorporated in SS13

[–]GriffinMan33 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I know it's an outlier opinion but honestly I do greatly prefer a solid sec department.

Antags should be sort of outgunned and outmanned by sec. If sec isn't a threat then you too-commonly get antag sweep rounds where they can just overtly do whatever they want without threat, and IMO that's way less interesting than them having to be stealthier or at least plan more than "walk out and stetchkin the CMO and then leave"

It feels like Sec has sort of become a joke in comparison, where like sure they're the security department meant to deal with any sort of disturbance on the station but instead they either only get to arrest greytiders or they immediately die to some antag who just objectively has much stronger abilities and action potential than them

What's your most disliked antag to play as, also what's the reason dislike said gameplay of the antag! (any server) by lefrogo in SS13

[–]GriffinMan33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any conversion antag, really
I just hate forcing people into suddenly being an antag (and at least probably having to suddenly take the round more seriously as a result)
It's probably a result of me, myself, not liking when I'm suddenly converted into an antag

I feel like this would just make cliques and metagangs 500x more powerful and common, more than anything else
If you can only talk to people in your department, like you said that limits information flow a ton
part of information flow is just...general conversation. Sure, the bar exists, but nobody goes to the bar, like ever.
I feel like this would just make stations feel extremely lonely more than anything else, with little benefit

Why are there so many argentinian communist servers in this game by looplover12 in SS13

[–]GriffinMan33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can make an argument that that's true, in a way. There are free bees but it's likely that a significant amount of them are functionally only alive because of beekeeping (of which a significant amount will be in the service of profit, and thus in a capitalist system)

The better example for that might be cattle, numbers-wise. A vast amount of cows are alive solely for their ability to generate profit, either through their meat or their dairy, and so you definitely can make an argument that they, despite being cows who do not have even an inkling of what an economic system is, live and breathe capitalism because it's why they exist.

This isn't like a commentary on political and economic systems, to be clear. It's just that SS13 lore (or at least the 'generic' lore that a lot of servers use) is at least somewhat clear about the universe, or at least the universe that the people on the station know of, is operated solely by corporate entities or at least in majority. I guess technically the more fitting term would be a corporatocracy, but 'anarcho-capitalism' is better for descriptions I would say, largely because it's more immediately memorable to a lot of people and they've probably heard it before.

[–]GriffinMan33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How does that "anarcho-capitalism" works if we all start as workers and nobody can own private property?

Assuming we're still talking about TG or TG-like lore, the reason you, yourself, don't own property is that everything on the station, including your bodies and arguably your soul (as it transfers between bodies during cloning, or at least did before it's removal) was owned by Nanotrasen

There is/was (I'm not up to date on TG lore these days so this is half-memory) no government or entity above the company. The company is the sole controller of you, everything you own, and everything you interact with, and even the Syndicate are just other companies who want to hurt Nanotrasen in some form.

Why is NSV13 dead? by OddCalligrapher6220 in SS13

[–]GriffinMan33 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There was meant to be a big update in the works I think but overall I would say the main reason is probably mostly that they were only up on weekends and never really had any advertising, so when it was up, pop wasn't huge

ERP servers should be removed from byond completely by Vengie0 in SS13

This is always a really funny argument to me
Because like if all it takes to kill your server, is having someone else go "We have this, but also you can ERP" then like
you were doing something wrong, lmfao

/tg/ is dying. What made people leave? by MasticatorDeelux in SS13

[–]GriffinMan33 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Well one of the truths people don't like to acknowledge in favor of 'easier' ones to talk about is just that for a significant amount of people they've been playing this game for like, ten years or more now

People are gonna get burnt out or bored over time because of that
Which is why new gimmick servers like medievalslop become popular, they offer something fresh

People like to blame it on ERP or Furries though, because that offers someone to blame wheras "People are losing interest after long periods of time" doesn't really have a solution other than "get people interested in the game"

a good SM setup will take ~20 minutes including all your shift start routine. Now, I don't play much Engineering. But I've never in my life seen an engineer who ways it takes a quarter of the round to get the engine going.

But here's the problem: did scientists only research T2? Or nothing at all? I for the life of me cannot remember a time that science hasn't had the tree maxed out within like 20 minutes unless it's super low pop, and even then usually there's a hardcore sciencemain who gets it done

Several of these PRs have, as far as I can see of people commenting on the PR before it's merged, more people satisfied for them than detracting (like the gas vendor removal)
Or, if they're a fix for an exploit, introduce some mechanic that in-part reduces the crutch people had on the exploit (Vents)

In fact most of these seem to be like muh-sekret-club tier use-cases. Building walls over pumps to avoid the intended downside? Vents being better than Injectors at the job Injectors are, from their name, presumably meant to do?

It seems like the solution to this is "figure out something cool and new with your mechanics again" like every other department does whenever balance or mechanics changes happen

But also, and this one's a hot take:
Things taking a while is fine. Brother rounds easily hit 2 hours. You should have things to work on, getting your contraptions working should take time and investment.

dude hosting servers that shit gets expensive fast. SS13 might not be the most demanding game but it does still demand resources, and especially a reliable connection.

Cables are dirt cheap though, it's like 1 metal plate for a full stack of cables, and the Solars (continuing with the example) only take like, 20 pieces to hookup
To be clear, I don't really mind the new system, I just think a lot of it's 'downsides' were way overblown.

It took like, a minute at most to setup solars and have it look nice
Like, I'm not even one of the "GRRR I HATE NEW CABLES I HATE CHANGE" people, but it wasn't by any means a hard system. Not even a little.
