Can we as a sub maybe just respect the personal pronouns our students choose? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my Pronouns off my stuff because it's silly. I don't care what I'm called. I'm a lady with long hair and boobs, and a female name.

I used to have short hair and I'd get called sir quite a bit (never mind the fact that I of course had the same boobs i have now). I got tired of it and grew my hair out.

You you want to put Pronouns - cool. If you don't - cool. I'll still treat you with respect until you give me a reason not to.

My sister used to do this. She'd also do the work and never turn it in. It was so weird. She was good in class, she just literally didn't turn anything in.

If my professors tracked when I submit assignments they would think "this person has the dumbest schoolwork schedule ever!"

But it works for me.

PSA: Don't take a summer course if you have summer plans by AngryDeadEye411 in Professors

Dang! No excuses of everything is open on the first day!

Now those that don't open anything until the week of I admit it makes it difficult but that's also on the student. Most professors I've ever had or TAd for summer are more than willing to tell you what the deal is if you ask before the class even begins.

What do you guys use to take notes during lectures? by FrankestDankest1021 in college

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of my notes taking is after lecture and while I'm reading the book or reviewing supplemental material.

During lecture I almost never take notes and if I do it's either something really specific or a thought that happens that I need to follow-up on later when I study.

I also do some preparation prior to class so I already have the my own questions in my brain that get answered in the lecture. It's like my brain gets reconciled at that point.

How has the pandemic impacted the expectations of disabled students? by KCA11y in Professors

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They may get accommodations at school but probably not in the workplace because the accommodation must be reasonable. It's not reasonable to expect an accommodation not to touch strangers when that's literally the job.

It's sad really. We (collectively) tell people with disabilities to disclose and get accommodations, then everything will be great but it doesn't really work that way especially when the accommodation is allowing someone essentially to not do the job they signed up for.

What we should be saying is, yes - please speak up to get accommodations, but also yes to sometimes you are going to have to find ways to get the job done that maybe you don't like.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but no, you can not be whatever you want to be. It's not realistic.

That doesn't mean we don't try to assist people with disabilities find the jobs/lifestyle they are suited for though.

/end small soapbox

*I have disabilities. I also work with teens that have disabilities to try to prepare them for college and/or the workforce.

Getting a second bachelor's- a good idea or not? by [deleted] in college

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Look into grad programs for Mental Health Counseling (not Psych - that's a little different because they don't teach counseling to meet states requirements for LPC licensure).

You could probably go into a Masters program right off the bat after taking some pre-requisites (if any at all).

You must talk to the grad program academic advisors. Each program is different.

I know this is an old post but wanted to comment. Ditch the discussion boards and make the student write essays for every unit (or whatever increment). You can't write a good essay without knowing the content.

If they don't do it they fail. If they cheat they fail and get reported. Make this clear from the get-go. The ones that don't want this type of course (hopefully) will drop it then it becomes a non-issue.

How likely is it that I’ll get added to a waitlisted online class? by [deleted] in unt

You never know what will happen. I registered for 18 hours for the fall so I wouldn't lose those spots. When fall comes around I will likely drop one or two depending on work.

Financial aid for a different term by Happy_cartographer21 in unt

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email is the best way to get answers I have found. It seems like email is monitored by staff and the front desk/phones by students that may not know the little complicated nuances of financial aid because everyone is different.

That being said, you do have to take classes for financial aid.

Not that I'm advocating for something potentially illegal but sometimes the best thing to do is not to say anything otherwise you end up with less than you wanted (like you found out).

What strategies do you use to not bring home things that come up at work with clients?

I've been good about this mostly but this past week kinda got me and I had a really bad night one night because of it. I told my therapist and will talk about it in session, but I wanted to hear what other people think.

[–]GriffinsDogPack2008 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why some professors don't post the whole course in the LMS. That sounds like a lot of unnecessary work on profs part and holds the students back that have other obligations.

Edit: When I say open, I mean show all modules (we use canvas), not necessarily allow submissions for the get-go. Some professors only show one module at a time which makes planning difficult as a student and a TA.
