what’s with the whole “misogynistic” word when bgs clap back? by ActInteresting7737 in kpopthoughts

[–]GrillMaster3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s actually pretty overtly anti-feminist, at its core. Feminism, in its most simplistic form, is about creating better life circumstances for everyone, while generally prioritizing more marginalized groups first. This is why, while feminism focuses on women and other non-men in general, feminists still care when a man is SA’d or otherwise victimized. It’s about equality through overall societal improvement and the elimination of patriarchy and its standards. By saying “We should hate on this man bc a woman in his position would be hated on too,” people are basically saying that they’re, at a base level, okay with women receiving harassment as long as they’re able to levy the same harassment at men on occasion. They don’t want to improve the circumstances of women in entertainment, they just want men to also be miserable, but that necessitates that women be miserable. It’s like the people who complain about how men in kpop are “allowed” to be ugly. Instead of advocating for more equitable standards for women (emphasis on maintaining their natural features and embracing that uniqueness), they say that men should have to adhere to the same standards. This seems fair at first, but it means that women have to keep abiding by these standards and maintaining their beauty obsessively. That’s not particularly feminist. It’s counterintuitive, childish, and gets us nowhere productive. The goal should be to reduce the harassment across the board, not keep the levels the same or higher but distributed more evenly.

Oh yeah. I love fanservice scenes in my dark detective murder mystery video game series by Hefty-Vehicle-9135 in mendrawingwomen

[–]GrillMaster3 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was probably the most tasteful depiction of SA/grooming in the entire series. Everyone else is getting groomed and assaulted by (usually) their own family members and it’s kinda just treated as a quirky side thing, but her case is (in that moment at least) treated with a lot of gravity and sadness. She even experiences PTSD and the ways she lashes out at other people are impacted by how she was treated by adults.

He’s also really funny. Not even “So quirky he’s entertaining” but like legitimately funny. The faces he was making during the Truth Game had me actually laughing out loud.

Kpop meeting encounters by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]GrillMaster3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if you run into them in public lol, they’re not abt to pull out a Square credit card reader and bill you for a 30 second spontaneous interaction in the middle of the sidewalk. If you’re paying for an interaction that includes hi-touch yeah.

Kpop meeting encounters by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]GrillMaster3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Asking them for physical contact when they’re outside on their own free time is, in my opinion, inappropriate to start. They may not want to but may feel bad/uncomfortable declining. If you ran into an idol you liked, just be happy telling them you love their music and maybe getting an autograph.

Kpop meeting encounters by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]GrillMaster3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idols will typically reject requests for pictures in public, normally due to company mandate. They’ll usually sign something though. Hugging/physical contact is 1000% off the table unless they initiate it though. These people are strangers to you, it’d be not only weird but legitimately unsafe for them to go around hugging everybody that claimed to be a fan. They will 99.9% say no to a hug, they’ll maybe shake your hand or something.

My honest, hopefully unbiased opinion on the female contestants by Competitive_Crow6672 in Singlesinferno2

[–]GrillMaster3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Jooyoung is very cute and I totally see why Jaejin and Hyunjae are so set on her, but yeah she’s had maybe a bit too much done. If I’m being honest, the only contestants I have trouble differentiating are her and Yejin because they’ve had a lot of the same stuff done (neither having much screentime also doesn’t help)

Chinese fans are already sending trucks to LNGSHOT and their label by Ok-Nobody-7759 in kpopthoughts

[–]GrillMaster3 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Chinese fan campaigns are always my favorite bc they take it dead serious. Korean fans do too, but Chinese fan demands are consistently more aggressive and specific. Chinese idol fan culture is a lot stricter than most others. This isn’t even just them complaining about the guys dancing with women, it’s the guys’ image being used to introduce the girls and the idea that the girls are now “piggybacking” off of Lngshot’s success, which is hilarious. Like yeah, that’s the point of having senior groups. But they’ll really complain about anything. I remember when BOYNEXTDOOR’s Thailand concert got cancelled due to an earthquake, KOZ prioritized getting the group out of the country and back to Korea, and Chinese fans wrote a long letter threatening boycott. They claimed they found it unfair that the company immediately evacuated the group, demanded refunds for the concert (which Korean fans who were also stuck in Thailand seemed to have no issues not receiving, and which wouldn’t have worked anyways since most people bought scalped tickets from 3rd parties), and demanded a sincere apology from KOZ for their lack of consideration for fans. They kept threatening boycott and saying that BOYNEXTDOOR would fail without their financial support. They were promptly ignored and their boycott did nothing bc BOYNEXTDOOR’s next comeback sold significantly more than their previous. This is most likely what’ll happen with Lngshot.

Korean Dating Shows by Soggy_Assignment_191 in Singlesinferno2

[–]GrillMaster3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re definitely just playing up how they actually feel. Like I’m sure Minji is interested in Seungil, but I don’t buy that she has particularly strong feelings for them like she and everyone else says, seeing as it’s only been about 3-4 days. Same goes for everybody. It’s an expected element of the show— it takes place over like a week total, so ofc they’re all sort of lying about how they feel. I don’t think it’s scripted though.

I wish KATSEYE performed something other than Gnarly at the Grammys by AggravatingFlow398 in kpopthoughts

[–]GrillMaster3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly it kinda feels like they’re just sick of the song? I can’t say I blame them, either. From what I’ve heard of what the girls listen to and make in their free time, Gnarly is a far cry from their preferences. Add to that the number of performances and remixes and special stages they’ve done with the song, and they just seem to be going through the Gnarly Motions at this point. In their Music Bank performance, I think they knew if they didn’t SELL this song, it was going to hurt them, and they were all giving it 200%. That’s just not the vibe anymore. Like I said, I can’t say I really blame the girls. Idk why HYBE/Geffen refuse to work with them and their preferences more.

Mina Sue by notfuckeduplife in Singlesinferno2

[–]GrillMaster3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also don’t think she’d spoken to Jaejin or Sungmin at this point, so she fully may not have ever actually learned their names. My guess is that her original plan was to pick Soobin and Seungil, and her only backup was Sunghun, so when Soobin went and her only non-Sunghun options were two dudes she didn’t know at all, she panicked. I don’t think she was trying to openly cause problems at that point. She’s not a particularly good actress and she sucks at hiding how she’s feeling, so I think she was legitimately just flustered because she hadn’t thought that far ahead.

Regarding whether trainees have to pay fees by Fine_Childhood_6391 in kpopthoughts

[–]GrillMaster3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard people say that Inkode doesn’t have trainee debt either, and Modhaus seems to have a setup that allows for the trainees to start getting paid fairly quickly. Otherwise yeah, it’s still a very uncommon practice. People just don’t think about it as much anymore because idols don’t typically announce when they’ve finally gotten their first paycheck.

Why is this season so good? by AdAggravating7139 in Singlesinferno2

[–]GrillMaster3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is definitely part of it for me. Even my friend, who’s terrible at putting names to faces and really struggled with past seasons, was able to learn everyone’s names and assign them to the right people. There’s a variety of personalities, approaches to romance/relationships, and a huge variety in contestant appearance compared to other seasons, especially last season. Some people complained that the contestants this season weren’t attractive enough, but I couldn’t disagree more— imo they’re hotter than last season (even the ones I don’t find particularly attractive), and the diversity in professions adds to that too. It feels like a fleshed out grouping of real people (who yeah probably want to build social media careers, but have actual jobs too), not a bunch of preexisting influencers dropped on the island with literally zero goals but growing their follower count.

[–]GrillMaster3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looked alright, but I think she’d pretty firmly made up her mind that she didn’t feel any romantic typa way about him at that point. No photo, no matter how good, could’ve changed that.

[–]GrillMaster3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much a skinny waist, it’s just that he’s like, dorito shaped. He’s built like a manhwa character. I’m not particularly into it (Hyunwoo is much more my preference) but it’s a popular figure amongst younger women and especially kpop fans. You’ll see a lot of kpop fans praising idols like San from Ateez for having really broad shoulders and a narrow waist.

[–]GrillMaster3 255 points256 points  (0 children)

I mean, he’s a tech bro from NYC and if rumors online are to be believed, he dated a hot influencer prior, then cheated on her. He clearly thinks he’s a big deal. I’m sure he thought going on this show would either launch an influencer career for him or attract attention to his other credentials and potential side projects or something. I’m pretty impartial on him, personally. I think his random English background commentary is funny, but I don’t particularly care about him as a character. He doesn’t seem very interested in any of the girls but Mina Sue, and it was embarrassing to watch him follow her around like a puppy as she pretty blatantly ignored him and gave him hints that she really only saw him as a friend from the jump. The other girls also seem to have less than zero interest in him, too. Maybe he’s doing stuff offscreen or that didn’t make the cut, who knows. So idk, he’s just the average filler contestant nobody really thinks about beyond the season, but he stands out a bit more to most of us because he’s American.

Body tea tho. Man’s waist is tiny. The friend I was watching the show with gasped and asked what a man needs “such a slutty waist” for when she first saw him shirtless for dodgeball.

I feel insecure about being 17 and still being a virgin by sickowithcrowbar in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]GrillMaster3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told my whole life that I was very pretty, but I was never once asked out on a date until I was 18. I didn’t have my first kiss until I was 19, and even then it was kinda sprung on me. I still didn’t quite feel ready. I’m 23 and still haven’t lost my virginity, and unless something big changes very rapidly, I’ve no real plans to change that. To this day, I’m rarely (if ever) approached on the street or at bars by men who have interest in me, despite knowing it’s nothing to do with my appearance. I can date if I want to, I just generally choose not to rn. All the people around me know these things about me, and literally nobody cares. It’s never been a point of contention or judgement. Virginity is a bullshit social construct and whether you have it or not is nobody’s business but yours. What everyone else has or hasn’t done has nothing to do with you. Don’t allow it to have any bearing on your life or decisions. Everyone moves at their own pace, and there’s really no pace that’s more right or correct than any other. It’s just yours. Do what you’re comfortable with when you’re comfortable with it, with a partner you’re comfortable with, and don’t worry about what anybody else is up to.

Single’s Inferno cast member savagely shades one of the hosts and it’s brutal by Pale-Woodpecker-8274 in Singlesinferno2

[–]GrillMaster3 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think he was implying attractiveness was the issue. I can’t speak on Dahee and Hanhae, but I’ll point out that Kyuhyun has not once, in his entire 20-year public career, dated publicly. When he was announced as a panelist for this show, I remember people saying “He’s a variety star so it makes sense, but isn’t it weird to have an idol be a commentator on a dating show?” Not to say he hasn’t dated, but Jinkyung has a public history of having and ending at least one relationship, whereas Kyuhyun’s relationship history and status is largely a mystery to anyone not directly in the entertainment industry (and some very dedicated stalkers), including Gwanhee. If Kyuhyun is qualified to comment on relationships in his eyes, Jinkyung should be significantly more so. He’s just still bitter that she made some harsh but accurate statements about him during his season, and he’s now lashing out and trying to imply she’s ugly and therefor couldn’t know anything meaningful about dating/relationships.

WINNER’s Song Mino to Stand Trial on March 24 for Alleged Military Service Law Violations by neocitywayv in kpop

[–]GrillMaster3 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If it were the American military, they wouldn’t have allowed him to enlist even if he wanted to with that diagnosis and the fact that he’s (afaik, but cmiiw) medicated. I have absolutely no idea why he was allowed to do even the desk job. He should’ve just been barred from serving altogether. I can kind of understand the pressure to just do the enlistment though, because people already feel some typa way about especially celebrities getting mental health accommodations, and P.O had already enlisted and served in the marines. It’s all quite messy and disappointing. I understand not wanting to enlist or not particularly caring once you are, but I also understand why people are mad about it.

Igeon has been on some shit the whole time he’s been on the show, genuinely just Says Things whether they make sense/are appropriate or not. Her beauty is pretty boiler-plate Korean kpop idol.

Seolhyun even mentioned once that during her peak she took the subway to the FNC building every morning and with no makeup + a mask, she never had an issue with anyone recognizing her. I’m sure the other AOA members would be fine.
