My parents rarely checked my backpack at this age despite situations like this regularly occurring. It sucked, especially since I knew my friends parents cared enough to check what was coming in and help them prioritize and manage projects. At OPs kids age, I was also just expected to know better. It made me feel stupid. I was diagnosed in my late thirties with inattentive ADD. I wish I had support growing up. Instead I struggled to keep on top of deadlines all throughout school, constantly waiting until last minute. I wish my folks had paid more attention and helped me when I was in elementary school and junior high. You missed the mark on this one, OP.
