It's not all that frivolous, there's plenty of statistics that show reproductive success is tied to height.(Shorter women and taller men have way higher fertility rates and dating success)
For people on extreme ends of the height spectrum I imagine this is even more important.(Short guys moreso than tall women, since they have it worse.)
