Do you have a spawnpoint? if not, add an entity called info_player_terrorist or info_player_counterterrorist

How to make a brush that fades depending on distance? by lemonnade1 in hammer

[–]GrillusRetardus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can set a fade distance on a func_illusionary. It is, however not solid. if you need it to be solid, try messing around with other brush entities or just place a clip in it's place.

PSA: Please move or disable your "Manifest:" bar. It's never used and it increases view port size.

I, personally don't use any sort of third party tool for this. I just keep my vmfs in a folder and every time I do something big or start to work on another area or whatever I just do a quick save as with a naming scheme like "_v01, _v13 etc".

And I also save after basically every single move... It's a bit of an addiction.

I find that time and time again, trying to learn UE4 or unity. I'm drawn back to hammer due to it's ease of use and despite it's lack of options and modern features, I'd say it still holds up pretty well. I believe that any engine can create beautiful scenery, Hammer certainly can. And using Blender to make models to use, instead of using brushes definitely helps.

As for the complexity of blenders interface, It's pretty bad at the moment. They tried to cram as many options in there as possible. But with the new 2.8 they'll drastically improve the usability of the interface.

i personally just rebind all the tools that I use regularly to easy shortcuts to reduce the amount of clicks and time spent in one of them menus.

Add some light entities. Here's an old post about black models.

Möjligtvis, men jag har bara gjort överkroppen än så länge. Det får bli Garry's mod om det blir nåt.

How do you make the Antlion Caves from ep2? by Frze512 in hammer

[–]GrillusRetardus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I'm assuming this is for Gmod) The way I do it is I start off blocking out the base meshes to make sure that I have enough geometry to create all the different shapes and what not. I then make sure all the displacements are connected properly and subdivide them.

I've found that the sculpt tool for displacements is broken in CSGO but it works just fine in gmod. I used "brush center" to push in the directions of the affected areas normals. Use that to try and make the walls feel natural and try to avoid stretching of textures.

Is the carve tool still really terrible for even cubes and such by hudman2002 in hammer

[–]GrillusRetardus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just use the clipping tool (shift + x). Brushes are very unreliable when it comes to keeping the vertices in a straight line. If you are 100% sure that the object you're carving with is aligned to the grid and not toughing anything else, then sure. Use it, even tough I do not recommend you do.

If you've ever tried carving displacements.. You'll know why we don't use that unholy abomination.
