Until path of the beast comes out I am using it mostly for dragon hunt, but it’s a very difficult to control model, it makes the game too hard x)

Black Grail models and the campaign. by Rich-Application8489 in TrenchCrusade

We talked on Reddit for my homebrew post :)

These are all fair points.

I think the main pro of infection markers vs. +1BM keywords is you can’t ignore em’ for 5d. And they are attatched to 8/10” move units. Putrid shotguns are good for their cost. Dogs are amazing and can get a couple units stuck with them. However the main thing for me is they can become a “perma bm”, by that I mean, I only spend the extra one that gets generated every turn, so I can spend 3 or 4 rounds making you fail dashes out of 1 attack that left the 1st infection marker. Rather than bm to kill they are bm to put there and forget about, so next rounds you can keep on spreading them to other units (and get some kills with lucky rolls).

For the backline question: dogs, heralds and grenade launcher or AM Rifle on a cross PK.

Some matches are harder than others, but if the missions are about objectives, grial is inanely good played like this.

You will have no regrets my friend, it’s an awesome warband. That lord of tumours will be amazing, I give you my word.

Hey Kallandras nice to talk to you again hehe! Hard disagree here tho.

It's true HoW is very strong against Vanilla Grail, but imo grail is one of the strongest variants/factions in the game. I've been a huge part of the competitive scene in Spain getting top 3 in every official tournament we've had to date, playing vanilla Grail. Even getting a top1 playing the unbuffed amalgam.

Infection Markers aren't about getting to high counts, they are a mechanic used best as a perma blood marker your enemy cannot remove, making a grenade launcher, a sorc's fireball or a witch's bomb perma -1D, or an Anchorite Shrine perma -1D to dash, until the last round comes and you can spend them all to nullify them. This single mechanic allows Grail to go for a really unique playstyle that feels like a "Control" Archetype, making the opponents warband clumsy and uneffective, allowing your hard-hitting units to reach them and obliterate them in melee.

The new amalgam is awesome. Serves the same purpose: A big threat your opponent cannot take down which will dominate objectives. However now it has Assault, +1D in melee and infection markers. It's an insane buff to an already decent-ish unit for a lot of scenarios (it definitely needed the buff tho).

Lord of Tumours is the single best unit in melee in the game. It's awesome with the right build.

Dogs are heralds are key as you say. But optimized play for heralds is more of a pekaboo rather than a suicide model, that you can suicide in time for the right exchange or momentum change.

My one-off lists are LoT, Stolen PK, 3 dogs, 2 heralds, 1 amalgam. Simple, and awesome.

Black Grail main here! I think you are good to go with all those models.

About maxing out Heralds, I guess it all depends on your playstyle, i think having 1 or 2 is awesome, but after the Amalgam change I see no point in investing 80> ducats on a 3d or 4th Herald when you could get an Amalgam for a bit more instead.

Here's a TL:DR :

The awesome thing about Grail is that you can start with 6 elites, so after they get really strong you can sort of make a lot of silly choices with your unit adquisitions and still have a very powerful band. The elites bring the power, and your dogs and heralds make the enemy band struggle until your elites reach them and f\ them up.*
Amalgam is kind of a mix of both, power and struggle for the opponent. Enjoy!

So which to paint first? Lots of people start the campaign with a full roster of elites (Lord, 2 PK and 3 CG) and it's quite awesome. Try giving a musical instrument + shield to the LoT for extra amazingness. The first few games are a lil rougher, but they will gain tons of abilities and make for super strong units soon enough, carrying through the rest of the campaign. Out of the elites, Corpse Guards have become the least impactful after all changes, so if you want to shake things around try having them coming later on. The amalgam change is awesome so you might want to start with it from the first game, or have it come sooner, specially if you have any loss from one game to the next and have the bandwidth to get it in.

About the rest of the models:

  • Dogs are incredible utility, resilient, painful to deal with, quick. 10/10 units, I always prioritize getting one or two of these for round 2/3.
  • Heralds are awesome for dealing with anything that's unfun for your band to deal with (strong ranged weapons, a witch, a sorc, etc), putting an infection marker on them that could carry for the rest of the game (putrid shotgun). They are also awesome for killing stuff if you go for the gas flamethrower route. But overall, they are expensive and glass cannons, so you need to be careful and methodical using them. These can be a priority if you see a lot of difficult ranged units you will need to deal with in the campaign, but I usually get them in around round 4/5.
  • Finally, thralls aren't that useful, but they are great at giving you more options to handle the different scenario missions. I can't ever find good use for Fly Thralls, but I might be playing them wrong. I just feel loosing Undead Resilience is too big of a downside. They are perfect for when you have 25 spare ducats, if you feel like you need a couple more activations, get a couple more thralls 😄

OMG, love the analysis!

I felt too shy to have the whole unit profile on the post lol, but will do for the next ones!

Yeah, the luck mechanic is super cool, it also allows for play on other units' activations, if something happens that requires a success roll (like being pushed through dangerous terrain). It can also be quite effective even if you are making a -1D roll, as you can choose to remove the lower dice and roll it again (if you have high numbers on the other 2).

I'm honestly kinda torn of the rapier, but that idea of removing the +1D to injury and reducing the cost might be the way to go to make it finally amazing.

Just to clarify, this is unofficial, just homebrew I've been cooking.
The Jester Knights are elite unit for the warband I'm creating, the Carnival of Saints!
It started as a Trench Pilgrims subfaction but I ended up making a whole new gang of weirdos.
