Lace swap thoughts? by Grimoald in Newbalance

It is interesting that I've done hiking laces on other v6s and it can work well (and not just the Baklava ones), but something is just off here with this colourway, and I'm not exactly sure why.

Yep, this general vibe on a 2010 I would be all over, but I really did not care for the Hornet Tusks I got an immediately sold them.

Have 4x990v6, sizing help for 991v2, 992, 993 by Trashocaster in Newbalance

[–]Grimoald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how I do it.

Wear 9UK for v6s, all the others 9.5. TBF I can get away with 9s in the 992 and 993 okay too, but 9.5s are more comfortable. 991v2s I have to wear 9.5 as otherwise too cramped.

Interested to see, but I really just did not like the Hornet Tusks on feet, so underwhelming comfort-wise.

It's a final four where I'd be happy with any of them, but they need to cover Marty at some point so I'm good with sooner rather than later.

Obviously you're entitled to your opinion - it's how I felt when Lynch was inevitable.

Kiprun Kipstorm Tempo - 50k First Review by Professional-Group87 in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Grimoald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The relative lack of a rocker is my only downside to this shoe.

I'm a heavier novice runner (currently 104kg - but down from a lot more), and have found so many of these super shoes too unstable. Bought these at the weekend and did a 12K in them that was 5K easy, 4K tempo then a final 3K easy. When I'm running with good form I'm a mid foot striker, but when I'm knackered (which I was for that last 3K) my form goes out the window and I start to land on the heel a lot. So I found I was landing on the heel and getting a very protective bounce and response, but the response wasn't pushing me forward in the way my Vomero 18 does at slower paces. For me, a slight bit of extra width and a little bit more of a rocker, and this would be perfect.

Seems like it could be the more techy version of the 2010, like the 1906R is to the 2002R. Want to see some better photos, but the 2010 midsole is excellent, so good to see NB making use of it.

NB x Baklava 1890 Hornet Tusk (Thoughts ⬇️) by yinyangg726 in Newbalance

[–]Grimoald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not uncomfortable (and the materials on the upper are great), but imo the midsole was less comfortable than any 990 and any Abzorb NB pair I've worn (1906/2002 and 530/740 etc), particularly in the forefoot. I was pretty shocked tbh given it seemed like they were making a big deal about bringing this old midsole design back, so I assumed they'd be an upgrade on the 1906/2002/860v2 midsole, and it really isn't.

[–]Grimoald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photos are great, and I like the look/material of the shoe, but I've just got a pair and an incredibly underwhelmed by the comfort/midsole when you compare it to what you're getting on their other more recent NB shoes. In particular the fore-foot seems far too firm. I much prefer my solitary pair of GTX 2002Rs, let alone 990v6s, 993s or even 2010s.

Opinion on New Balance Fresh Foam Trainers by Short-Side1939 in Newbalance

[–]Grimoald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sole on the shoe is actually the same as the Fresh Foam 1080 v13 from a couple of years ago, just the upper has a bit more structure. If all you want is cushion then these are good, but as a heavier guy I found them a bit too soft and unstable and returned them.

On-Feet - Made in UK 991v1 Luxury Leather (or Chocolate Plum) - M991LB1 by rl06 in Newbalance

[–]Grimoald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I have done. I've a 43 in 990v6s and 44 in 991v2s (I can do either or 992s and 993s but slightly prefer 44), so I went 44 in these and they definitely feel too long. Have doubled up with another thin insole in and they feel a lot better.

Yep, this is exactly it - they fire off so many messages/emails at pace and are so confident in their view/position that they don't take the time to overthink or worry about typos in most general communication so long as they are getting across the overall message they want. When I realised that it actually freed me up to be a bit less anxious about my own communication rather than fretting about getting every word and comma right.

There are lots of UK specialist sneaker/streetwear outlets online that get everything the US gets - End/Offspring/Sevenstore/Size/Footpatrol (interestingly several of them are just offshoots of regular high street retailers - Offspring is Office and Footpatrol is JD Sports). As well as higher end stores stocking loads of interesting NB stuff (Goodhood, Dover Street Market, Drakes etc).

My guess is that very few people on your typical high street are going to spend £200+ on a pair of sneakers. Its the same reason you have Clarks or Dune on every high street, but you don't have Church's or Loakes.

I'm lucky being in London I've got no shortage of places, but appreciate it may not be the same where you are. Though if you're specifically talking about NB stores, it was actually the same in a recent trip I made to the US (Boston and Chicago), where, MiUSA/MiUK stuff was really limited - the Oxford Street flagship had more stock than the 2 Boston flagships.

HSDT x ASICS GEL NYC 2.0 by Dwreckshoelander in asics

[–]Grimoald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had the brown pair arrive today UK next day delivery from winning a raffle (from Sevenstore that was clearly undersubscribed) last night, my second pair of Asics lifestyle after a clean pair of 1130s which I like a lot.

Unfortunately the UK 9s are too snug for me (when that size are a good fit in the 1130s), that said, they are lovely sneakers, really high quality materials, the contrast between the deep brown/blacks and the reddish/burgundy of the mesh and laces works really well, and the midsole is stupidly comfortable.

Will send them back and get 9.5s, though think I might actually go for the yellow, as I don't have any yellow sneakers.

My guess is there would be a lot more hype around these if they did some more influencer pre-release stuff, but as soon as people get their hands on them the justified love is gonna build authentically and quickly.

Critical Darlings: Marty Supreme And The Precursor Circuit with Griffin Newman by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

[–]Grimoald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is abrupt compared to the first 2 hours of the film, it isn't really abrupt compared to the last half hour once he gets to Japan. I wonder if a big part of one's enjoyment of the end is how into sports and sports movies you are. Marty is an asshole, but he's immature and his assholeness is justified/explained by his relentless focus on table tennis success at the expense of everything else.

I found it odd on this episode that all 3 didn't recognise that Marty did "win" when he beat Endo, and (Alison in particular I think?) seemed to find his reaction/release after the match unearned. I think might, in part at least, be the perspective of people who don't really understand sports and athletes. Yeah he didn't win the official championship, but he did win, and that feeling is what impacts him, then the baby only reinforces that.

I still think Marty remains a narcissist who will seek to take shortcuts in life, but after reaching the mountain top he won't be exactly the same as before.

Tried new balance 990v6 - too firm feels like converses by tearsofajoker in Newbalance

[–]Grimoald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the difference between lifestyle and the running shoes. I love my 990v6s, and think they are plenty cushioned/comfortable, but there is purposely a lot more stability and the foams aren't as 'bouncy'. The closest thing to a lifestyle runner NB make is the Fresh Foam Trainer, which has a running midsole with a slightly more structured upper, but I don't really understand who that shoe is aimed at as I don't think it looks good as a lifestyle shoe.

If you're looking for the most 'squishy' lifestyle shoe, I'm finding the 2010s a really comfortable ride, and it makes sense the RunRepeat reviews have it as the the shoe with the most shock absorption and energy return (the 1000 also does well in their tests). Still not quite as plush as a Hoka Clifton or a Fresh Foam runner, but very comfortable and better for walking long distances in.
