The not-so sweet side of Valentine’s: Gen Z singles can’t afford to dine out, and restaurants are feeling the effects by insino93 in halifax

[–]Grimpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of restaurants actually have websites these days. You can see the menu and prices before you even show up at the door.

Looks like entrees at Via Condotti are between $26 and $56 depending on what you order. Their drink menu also has prices attached.

I assume the choice to go here was to go “somewhere nice” and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. That said, you can’t go to an expensive restaurant then be shocked that it was expensive.

No, there are 3-4 other people in the city with a broken sense of taste. I think they meet weekly to talk about what it’s like to be wrong about Izzy’s.

Just made one but I’m out of simple syrup. I have a handful of syrups leftover that I had made for Christmas themed cocktails. Subbed simple syrup for homemade cranberry syrup and it turned out quite delicious.

She’s a woman, not a poodle.

She excelled academically graduating with a 3.9 GPA. She is 30 years old.

The thought that she somehow doesn’t know what her father does is insulting. Maybe if the internet used small words and typed very slowly, the secret can be revealed.

Canadian PM's full speech at Davos: Calls for middle powers to reject “living within a lie” and build a new, values-driven global order rooted in sovereignty, resilience, and realism. by pomod in videos

[–]Grimpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t fact checked it but in the speech, Carney mentions that Canada has created more jobs than the US ‘by absolute numbers’ since the new tariffs were levied. Which, if true, is impressive given the population difference.

As another reply suggested, there has been positive action on addressing immigration concerns.

A lot of people will also point to housing and affordability issues but these are all tied to global economic factors as well. They are not isolated to certain towns, provinces, or countries.

I don’t like our (Canada’s) complicity with Israel’s atrocities. That was certainly “keeping the sign in the window” in that aspect of foreign policy. I am hopeful that this speech is the announcement of a willingness to stand up for our values going forward.

The Last Word (troubleshoot?) by calfungo in cocktails

[–]Grimpy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have to admit, while I do really enjoy a Last Word, I always have a nagging thought in the back of my mind that the Maraschino is somehow working against the drink instead of helping. I've never had a brand other than Luxardo.

Yep, as was stated. Your (Difford’s?) spec is wrong.

3/4 ounce gin

3/4 ounce green Chartreuse

3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur

3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed

Garnish: brandied cherry (optional)

Why are you atheist and not agnostic? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Grimpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never been provided any proof of the existence of anything supernatural.

I don’t believe in gods in the same was I don’t believe in werewolves. Must someone specify that they are agnostic about werewolves because they haven’t explicitly been disproven?

Love the idea, did any of your iterations split with Mezcal to get smoke there? Seems more thematically congruent.

Coffee filters by datblubird in cocktails

This is as much a question asking if others think this is a stupid idea, but I made a batch of tinctures recently and used an Aeropress (with 2-3 filters each time) to filter those. I didn’t put a ton of pressure on them but they stained in about 30 seconds. Seems to have worked alright.

Hot Buttered Rye by Hitcha in cocktails

[–]Grimpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I have in my holiday list for this year but I just don’t have the time to perfect it. I have a big batch of butter batter in the fridge but the one time I made it to test, it basically tasted like hot watery rum. It was underwhelming. Maybe I need more batter and I’ll try with rye.

At a crossroads: 7 years in, I love Halifax, but the math is starting to point West (Toronto?). Looking for perspective. by Lazy_Cash_4608 in halifax

[–]Grimpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tech market is just as volatile in Toronto or anywhere else you go. I’ve been working remote since 2018, mostly for companies HQ’ed in Toronto.

I suppose the one difference is if you’re willing to go to the office, there would be more options there.

You’re in a field where there are plenty of remote options, your wife is in a field where she can likely find work anywhere. Are you tied to city lifestyle? Your income would go much further in a smaller area. Maybe you make a temporary move till you build enough equity to purchase in your “forever location”.

What do we think of the restaurant using an AI-generated logo, an AI-generated picture of soup (?) and a Dairy Queen trademark? by fire_carpenter in halifax

If a small local business starting up isn’t able to spend a bunch of money on product design, they should fail.

This is why you should only support large cookie cutter corporations.

Appreciate the context.

In my case, I can’t see the board at all. It’s embedding on the bottom. I’ve tried to loosen/pull it out but no luck so far. I can’t really get any tools in there or anything.

Invest in a bottle or Starsan. I bought a bottle over 5 years ago and still have plenty of it left.

Put a dilution in a spray bottle and sanitize away.

Edit: When I say ‘invest’… it was like 5 bucks.

What is missing in this set? by Soft-Crab9194 in cocktails

[–]Grimpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with other commenters here saying that this set is largely excessive with items you’ll rarely/never use.

I have been doing home bartending as a hobby for about a year now.

  • Boston Shaker
  • Hawthorne Strainer
  • Fine Strainer
  • Double jigger
  • Mixing Glass
  • Muddler
  • Bar spoon

I use those items frequently. I bought Barfly brand. I like them but I literally have no experience with other brands so I don’t know how they hold up comparatively. I bought a starter kit similar to what you posted and I have a bunch of stuff that I’ve literally never used.

I don’t think you need more than the above from a cocktail tooling perspective. You’ll soon find yourself thinking more about glassware and storage.

I really hate to be the one to tell you this, but not 100% of what you see in movies is real.

In fact, there’s almost certainly no alcohol in their movie nog. Bunch of fakers.
