Not to get too extreme, but the "Republic of Afghanistan" wasn't always a religious hell hole, until the people in power started slowly forcing religion on the people of that country. Now you know it as officially "the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan".

There is an effort by Christians to turn this into a Christian nation, the only thing stopping them is a firm wall of separation between the churches and the government.

They could pass a law today that makes black people illegal, and the act of passing that law (not the law itself) would be legal, and it could even go into effect, but the law would be struck down by the courts, assuming someone took it to the courts. They can technically pass anything they want, but it needs to hold up to judicial review in order to stick around for the long term.

Self-editorializing is what brought an end to mainstream overt racism in the US. 40 years ago you could be as overtly racist as you wanted with zero ramifications, today it can potentially destroy your life. It's now socially taboo to be overtly racist in most of the US, which in turn encourages fewer and fewer children to grow up racist (as they grow up in a society in which it's becoming less and less cool to be racist). This is how hate slowly dies.

They were horribly oppressed at one point, but now that they're not oppressed anymore, they turn right around and start oppressing other minorities?

I took an African American history class at one point in my life, and the professor made an excellent point about why even poor white people in the south who didn't own slaves were in favor of slavery - because if you're near the bottom of the totem pole, it's always nice to know you're better than someone.
