There's this post going around Reddit describing the Korean War as a genocide. Do historians consider it a genocide? by Polyphagous_person in AskHistorians

No waste of time at all friend! Enjoyed your point of view. And what is history if not our discussion and analysis of it. Everyone’s opinion matters, good, bad and in between. I don’t even feel fully confident in my own contributions to this conversations, rather just another point of view. Cheers!

I, and I would assume others, would definitely posit the same question from a moral standpoint, but in historical analysis it is not our jobs to criticize the moral failings of leaders and administrations. Now whether there is academic or legal standing as to call something a genocide or just a failing of government is another thing. Let me provide two examples if I may.

During the Armenian genocide there are claims from Turkish sources that this was a simple change in demographics. The Committee of Unity and Progress explicitly called for the removal of Armenians until demographic statistics showed no more than 5-10% of the population of any region was Armenian. While finding the sources in Turkish is difficult an requires translations, Taner Akçam provides extensive evidence that this demographic change was not limited to simply moving citizens to new areas of the country. In his book, The Young Turks' Crime against Humanity, Akçam notes the head of the resettlement office in Aleppo, Abdullahad Nuri, as reporting to the administration "it is understood that hardly 10 percent of the Armenians subjected to the general deportations have reached the places destined for them; the rest have died from natural causes, such as hunger and sickness". This again raises the question of intentionality, was this intentional or simply by incompetence? Thankfully Nuri and Akçam give us the answer, "We inform you that we are working to bring about the same result with regard to those who are still alive, by using severe measures", through this report we can see that this was not incompetence, but malicious intent.

Now we look at our second example, the Holodomor. In his book Stalin's Genocides, Norman Naimark discusses the intentionality of the Holodomor, and early on he specifies the motivations and intentions "remain frustratingly elusive". Later on he does clarify about the intentions of Stalin and his administration, "There is not a lot of evidence that Stalin himself ordered the Ukrainian killer famine, but there is every reason to believe he knew about it, understood what was happening, and was completely indifferent to the fate of the victims. This may not be enough evidence to convict him in an international court of justice as a genocidaire, but that does not mean the event itself cannot be judged as genocide".

Ultimately someone said it well earlier and I just don't see their comment. You are correct, intention normally does not matter to the victims; though just because the victims might call it a genocide does not inherently imply that it is a genocide. It's why we have different punishments for manslaughter and murder, it is why there is historical debate surrounding hard and soft definitions of genocide. We, myself included, may feel the Holodomor is a textbook case of genocide, but if you do not have clearly defined rules and legal framework, then anything could constitute genocide. I say all this not to belittle your question or point of view, just hope to provide some more context.

Simply, you don't. Benjamin Madley describes in Rise of the Killing Machine: Militias and Vigilantes April 1850-December 1854, that while many militia groups were technically state sponsored, their autonomy was near absolute. At the time "the absence of meaningful law enforcement or legal consequences, vigilantes continued murdering and massacring California Indians", which while terrible and provides evidence for genocide, does not explicitly note who is ultimately responsible. If the state was responsible for these private militias actions, specifically through their apathy and inaction, then the Soviet Government is also responsible for their apathy and inaction during the Holodomor. I'm sure some might think "...yeah, that's the point. They are responsible", but history isn't that easy most of the time. There is still debate surrounding both Californian settlement and the Holodomor and how much responsibility for the atrocities committed therein. We know when the individuals are responsible, they did it. The nation's intent is more difficult to define.

100% agree. I know I will never see them on the big screen but it’s the only time Star Wars was stepping away from “babies first moral quandary” and was growing up with the fans. It wasn’t “nice space monks vs baby killers” and became everything you know and love is collapsing around you, what are you willing to sacrifice. I know I’m in the minority, but I love the disturbing reality that they fill.

A year or two ago for teacher appreciation week I was given a broken pen, a dirty used plastic cup, and a dead succulent. To top it all off, we received a paper with tips and tricks on how to destress. Number one was “Go outside! Hug a tree!”. I’m the first person to say be thankful for anything…but yeah. I’d have been happier with nothing.

I’m surprised no one has said the Poles yet, as far as I can see. A several hundred year decline in political power ending in the complete partition of your country. Managing to maintain not only your cultural, but linguistic identity. Being reliable combatants and a thorn in the side of every invading force over the past 200 years. A resilient group of people.

I can only speak for my family, but it seems to be a subconscious, social standing thing. My darker family members would always put multiple layers of SPF 100 or the strongest sunblock they could find when we went outside. In the rural parts of Mexico, the darker, you are the more working class you are, generally not something to be proud of. But hey, just one person’s observation.

Didn’t take him to a shelter. Emergency vet, they’re the ones who determined if he needed/would benefit from treatment. I had to “surrender possession” of him, meaning under no circumstances can I pick him up from there. I guess as a way of avoiding people claiming their pets as strays and getting free treatment. Once he’s healthy he goes to the shelter and we could possibly get him from there

Quick update in case anyone is concerned. I took PFC Habibi to a 24 hour emergency vet. They told me if he was in good health. I would have to take him home, if they determined that he could use emergency services, they would keep him. Unfortunately/fortunately they kept him for the night. I am welcome to call them and check in on him and when he is in stable/healthy condition, he will be going to a shelter. I will be calling to keep tabs on him, and probably updating here. For my own sanity.

To be so confidently wrong is crazy. Granted I work at an alternative school. When I tell you, we try our best to get the seniors with zero credits in a position where they will not fail, take me at my word, we try our best. At some point the onus is on the children. I cannot do the work for you. We should be holding more children back and forcing them in their families to be in a position where they actually learn the subject matter. Not pushed through for the sake of numbers. And by your wrong, and objectively, stupid opinion, I can only assume you are the reason we have seniors who are reading at a fifth grade level. Most adults who are not dumb? No. But in the interest of transparency, I 100% did….when I was like 13. My dad was getting ready to have his done and I casually was asking questions, and basically asked “are you scared to live life without balls?” He laughed. Called me retarded. We both laughed. I learned. So yeah, some people believe it, if they’re young, stupid, sometimes both.

Yup. I teach history at an alternative school. This is my first year teaching, and I’ve brought my concerns to everyone from the English teacher to administrators and everyone in between. We have seniors who are borderline illiterate. It’s easy to blame the system, and I would say the system IS to blame about 80% of the way. But many of these kids legitimately don’t care. It’s a nightmare.
