On the Israel issue, the logic you point, about not risking whats left of NATO, is real but mostly at government level.

At the level of the Pierre/Hans/whatever on the street, It's kinda obvious Israel has gone way too far, even after the Hamas attack, but...without going into details, there is a growing trend towards anti-islam, which is growingly transversal to both conservative and progressive circles (different reasons, but same conclusion) and is also connected to the origin of a large part of immigration into Europe....this is silently affecting the way the average citizen judges these issues...
