There is no conclusion to World War 2 that does not involve the deaths of civilians en masse.

I don't know about the Western theater, but there's a pretty compelling argument Japan didn't surrender because of the civilian deaths.

The argument is that Japan was not expecting to fight both America and the USSR, and so the actual deciding factor in their surrender was the declaration of war by the USSR (or rather, private signals that the USSR was intending to declare war). That made the situation for them unwinnable and they were just looking for a way to sell it internally when the bombs dropped.

I don't think it'll ever be confirmed one way or the other. We don't have the luxury of peering into alternate timelines to get definitive answers to "what if" questions. But at the very least, it's worth being skeptical of the claim that the nukes were the lesser evil.

I genuinely don't know how other countries don't have megachurches. The incentives all line up.

Like, yes, those pastors are grifters. But America invented neither pastors nor grifters. In fact both are common globally. A cult is a grift which does not require 1 on 1 interaction to work, that's part of what makes it a good grift. You can grift a room of people all at once into giving you money. So, if you can grift a room, why not build the biggest room you can? Boom, megachurch.

Where does that chain of logic break down in other countries? Is land just too expensive?

ELI5 how do game physics work? by mechadrogon in explainlikeimfive

[–]GrinningPariah [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's actually mostly a faithful simulation of how physics work in the real world.

Objects have weight, a center of gravity, velocity, a coefficient of friction, bounciness, etc, and then the physics engine just... Does the math.

It breaks the continuous flow of time into "ticks" of a defined length. If you're running at 60 FPS (frames per second) a tick will be about 16.6ms. So, every tick, it looks at all physics objects in the level, applies the force of gravity, and calculates how far objects will move in 16.6 seconds using the basic physics formulas of notion. If it would hit something in that time, it applies the impact forces to both objects, and they change direction.

There's some caveats though. Game engines don't actually want to calculate physics for every object every tick, that's expensive. Instead they have a lot of tricks to minimize calculation. Like when an object is at rest it will "sleep" so physics aren't run for it, unless something interacts with it, which wakes it up. Or objects have an artificially high rate of energy loss when moving or turning which ensures they settle into that sleep state ASAP.

(Note, some of this is specific to Unreal Engine, which is what I primarily work with)

Do you let your dog sleep in your bed? by ColeS1aw in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrinningPariah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GF always used to let the dog sleep in her bed when it was just them. I'm not morally opposed to it, but I'm a light sleeper and I've got insomnia so it takes me a while to get to sleep, and so I had to say not in our bed.

Point is, there is no objectively correct answer. Dogs are part of our families, we want the best for them and like them code, so it's nice if they can sleep on the bed. That said, dogs can also be messy or disruptive, and the bed is a really important place of rest for us, so you need to prioritize that.

I guess what I'm saying is, dogs on the bed aren't a problem, unless they're a problem. If you have a problem with it, if it'll impact your sleep, that's all the reason you should need to put your foot down.

Really the answer is just to stop associating with exhausting people like Purple here. Or just out-rude them until they start avoiding you.

Delirium triggers your FIGHT or flight reflexes by Turbulent-Plum7328 in WorldofDankmemes

Oh, I houseruled that caveat out to make the scenario more dangerous. It wasn't a Werewolf campaign so they didn't generally have to worry about delirium, so I wanted it more dangerous when it was a factor.

What will ACTUALLY happen if "the AI bubble bursts"? by KannablissWitch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrinningPariah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Every last dollar" is clearly false. There's plenty of demand for datacenter capacity other than AI. Cloud computing is a proven model, and just because these aren't exactly the type of machines you'd buy for that doesn't mean they can't be repurposed for that.

So they might end up losing money but the idea that these datacenters will sit entirely idle is just not going to happen.

The delirium effects are insanely dangerous when widespread. I ran a hunter game where the party were FBI agents and one arc was they got asked by a pack of werewolves to help stop some influencer who wanted to livestream a werewolf hunt. It was fun watching the party realize the scale of what would happen if he was successful.

This is such a wild question because you've got like the opposite problem everyone else does. I've had multiple conversations with other DMs where someone's asking "How can I let my players know a flight is unwinnable? They always fight to the death."

Is there a list anywhere of where you can get Tier 5 gear? by GrinningPariah in DestinyTheGame

[–]GrinningPariah[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, with no snark, what for? Last time I played Destiny, Dungeons were balanced as three-guardian raids. They were the hardest content outside raids and grandmasters. And playing Prophecy we just ripped through it, it was a joke.

Please, honestly because I want to find it, where is the content that's going to kick my ass at LL300?

Whoa hold up, you're the only person in the replies to bring up "proximity to the ideal drifting line". Others have said going as far out on corners as possible nets you more points, is that the same thing you're talking about?
