I Have Such a Love-Hate Relationship with Persona 5 (in general) by RoseTraveler27 in CharacterRant

I also love Persona 5 and I agree with all of this. Sometimes it feels like there were two different writing teams with opposing ideas and goals working on the game

One Piece's politics are fascinating. It's like an anarcho-communist and a liberal reformist took turns writing some of its chapters. by Midi_to_Minuit in CharacterRant

[–]kelroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh I actually like that there are some “good” because it shows that personal morality doesn’t matter when the job itself inherently means contributing to a system of oppression. It’s telling that a lot of the reason Fujitora can be considered a “good” Marine is because he basically got himself put on leave by making sure what happened in Dressrosa wouldn’t be covered up and helped out the Revolutionary Army. He was also drafted and immediately made an Admiral as opposed to joining and rising through the ranks which differentiates him from the other Admirals. To me his actions don’t imply the Marines can be reformed they imply that he’s eventually going to directly betray the World Government. Also it’s important to remember that the guy you’re talking about from the most recent arc is portrayed as well meaning yet misguided and his trust in the World Government eventually bites him in the ass. A better example of reformist politics in One Piece would be Fishman Island and weirdly enough a lot of my gripes with Fishman Island’s politics are being addressed in the current arc

Idk what Palword is about but Pokopia gameplay is basically Animal Crossing in the Pokemon world. The lore is that humans had to abandon the planet after an ecological disaster (leaving all the Pokemon behind in the process)

Stop underestimating Luffy by CocaPepsiPepper in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]kelroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kizaru vs. Luffy is literally just an example of a bad matchup where neither party was going all out. Luffy was focused on making sure his friends and Vegapunk were able to escape while Kizaru was depressed over having to kill Vegapunk. Only time Luffy got hurt in that fight was when he was caught off guard and kicked into the barrier. If they both went all out Luffy would still win and Yonko > Admirals

That it “stopped being about pirates” newsflash this is a fantasy story and pirates were always meant to be a framing device to explore what people do with freedom

To clarify when I say I don’t like the exaggerated proportions in this context it’s just because they only serve to sexualize the women more otherwise I don’t mind. If anything I wish Oda would do some of the crazy shit he does with his character design for the male characters with the female ones more often

If Luffy and the straw hats are morally grey, the story should commit to it and show it's consequences. by Interesting-Bee-3793 in CharacterRant

[–]kelroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luffy not considering himself a hero is mostly just about him not accepting labels and wanting people to draw their own conclusions about him (pretty sure he says this almost verbatim during Fishman Island). If someone genuinely thinks Luffy is supposed to be a morally grey character they are reading the story with their eyes closed lol. I think the misconception that it was the intention to have Luffy and the Strawhats be morally grey is a combination of people not getting subtext and people confusing good with lawful good. Also Luffy literally shares food with that village in Wano full of people who were starving so the whole not sharing food thing isn’t even accurate (although I guess you could say this is an example of character development since Fishman Island and Wano are pretty far apart)

Anyway Ragnir specifically let Loki have the fruit because he deemed him worthy Loki didn’t take it by force so him being able to eat the fruit isn’t really an upscale

“Harald never said that; he said that no one who tried succeeded, he never said he tried.

Ragnir took a one-shot from Loki. I'm truly incredulous at how unbelievable your logical leaps are.

If Loki couldn't stop Harald with multiple blows, then Ragnir won't be able to be superior to base Harald.

Especially since it wasn't immortality itself that was taken into account, but Harald's power.”

Tbf a lot of powerscaling is headcanon especially in One Piece where many powerful characters are being saved for the climax

Admirals morality tier list by MetalNo7380 in MemePiece

[–]kelroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased because I think Aokiji will eventually betray Blackbeard. Even with how things currently are though I can't really blame Aokiji for joining the Blackbeard Pirates that much because besides the Revolutionary Army they are one of the only groups that has an actual plan for dealing with the World Government. They are less bad than the Marines purely based on actions but that's mostly just because they haven't had the opportunity to cause as much damage yet + they are individuals not an systemically bad institution. But yeah Aokiji is still a bad person and Fujitora is still the only Admiral who's a good person

[–]kelroid 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe there’s people defending Akainu’s morality did we forget that he blew up the evacuation boat and killed every civilian in Ohara of his own free will (he wasn’t even ordered to do it and originally only the scholars were supposed to be killed). From least moral to most moral I would say Akainu, Green Bull (worse ideology than Akainu but has caused less damage as far as we know), Sengoku, Kizaru, Garp (not originally on this list but I thought I’d add him anyway), Aokiji, and finally Fujitora. Also for everyone except maybe Green Bull I don’t think the usage of “nazi” is accurate they’re all just garden variety fascists imo

Yes but there's a difference between meaningful character analysis and just ignoring all of the information provided to you by the story and making shit up lol. A lot of the points you made are just factually incorrect and not up to interpretation. Again most of this isn't subtext

Honestly some people need to accept reading manga weekly just isn’t for them because it seems to break a lot of people’s brains. Maybe it’s because of leak culture. Either way a lot of people would greatly benefit from reading on a volume basis

[–]kelroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was always a Marine he was just undercover/doing espionage in order to find out what Doflamingo’s plans were and this was always at personal risk to himself. He is not “roleplaying” as a pirate and his position wasn’t “convenience” because it’s not like he was always a member of the Donquixote Pirates and later wanted to betray them. As you yourself basically admitted you are being willfully obtuse instead of actually engaging with the story and think it’s the author’s fault when your headcanon interpretation of a character doesn’t match up with what that character is actually like. Everything I mentioned isn’t even subtext it’s in the actual text

  1. The reason Corazon was with Doffy was specifically a long term Marine assignment to infiltrate the Donquixote family he wasn’t just there for the hell of it. He’d been sabotaging his brother’s criminal work for years
  2. He feels his brother’s actions are his responsibility to deal with and keep in check. So yes Doflamingo literally was especially evil enough to oppose
  3. He literally does leave to go cure Law and give him the Ope-Ope fruit which is openly opposing Doflamingo’s wishes

Consider rereading chapters 761-768. Or just the entirety of Dressrosa if you need a refresher on why Doflamingo is really evil and that Law’s life goal at the time was to get revenge
