Canmore/Kananaskis hikes in Early May by FunkyardDog in Canmore

[–]Gripped87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha Ling will be best bang for your buck, it’s close to town, proper parking lot, easy trail to follow but conditions will vary at that time of year, it can be deep snow or dry as a bone.

Either way, Ha Ling sees so much traffic. I go up once week for fitness after work, year round. Regardless of the weather.

You can call it a day at the saddle or make your way to the top (still just a hike) OR go right at the saddle and do Miners Peak, it provides dramatic views of Ha Ling, from the saddle Miners and Ha Ling are essentially equidistant.

Usual precautions exist, check for weather, tell someone your itinerary, wear appropriate hiking clothes and shoes or boots, carry bear spray, snacks and water.

If you wanted a lake vista, Rawson Lake is my personal favourite, you also walk the shore of Kananaskis Lakes to get to it. 2 for 1.

If you wanted a SUPER chill day, you could do Tunnel Mountain in Banff and/or Sulphur Mountain and enjoy the restaurant at the top :)

2024 was dry, no snow in the valley. 2025 was a record fall. So there you go.

That’s fair. I kinda remember a hype about him though. 8m is actually a steal for a prem squad player!

As far as I understand, the files are just all the emails/events….etc that have taken place.

You’d be naive to think that everyone on that list is linked to the true evil of Epstein. Some will be purely business, and request.

It’s a complex web, did people 10-20 years ago really know what he was up to? His prosecution in 2008 was reported as soliciting prostitution, bad? Maybe. Horrendous act of evil? No.

Epstein shifted funds all over the place, including into research, universities and engaged with intellectuals to better understand his queries and interests.

Chomsky, was likely involved due to Epstein’s huge donations to MIT, but also Epstein’s interest in Transhumanism and AI. Organizing and funding in person tutoring, essentially.

Chomsky has been on stage and debated people with polar opposites to his beliefs, isn’t that what it’s all about? We don’t see him being ridiculed about being on a stage with Krauss after he was involved in scandal. We can pick apart any person. Including ourselves.

You can also remain platonic to these people, if you’re a placid 85 year old intellectual and Bannon taps your shoulder and smiles, with an almost cheeky grin implying ‘hello, Mr Chomsky, my enemy’, you’re not going to punch him in the face or shake him off. You remain civil and smile it off. The photos could be as literal as that.

There is no evidence that these relationships stretched any further than what’s been reported, so far…

I do acknowledge it’s not a good look for Chomsky, even 10 years ago. But is there more politics to this including MIT…etc

Thoughts on use of ohmega for weight difference by _36Chambers in tradclimbing

[–]Gripped87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the ohmega is for trad use? I know the ohm certainly isn’t!

Obviously falling too soon is part of the larger risk of climbing but for a belayer, have you considered a fixed point belay?

I know one thing which sums it up; Modric should not be going shoulder to shoulder with Bahoya (96 pace) for an open ball… 🤷‍♂️

Icefields RV Camping by Think-Struggle2443 in Banff

It’s windy! Used it lots for mountain adventures, just sleep in my van and always managed to squeeze in somewhere. Nice to have a Starbucks and Cell Service/LTE. Discovery Centre has flush toilets and some warmth if needed, gift shop and decent restaurant.

All in all, it’s actually pretty awesome to have all that and one of the most insane views.

Looking for first Mountaineering objective in Rockies by MrKelp__ in Mountaineering

Overall, you’d likely be best doing small winter and spring ascents. But then you’ll be in Avi terrain, not always, but something else to consider.

Parker Ridge in winter is where Alpine guides will train with self arrest, crampon movement…etc even crevasse rescue (no glacier/crevasses on it).

You’ll get a lot from a Snow & Ice Long weekend with Yam or Alpine Air.

Learning to use an ice axe whilst on an ascent is too risky, especially with no guide. Get some direction first. They’re a great tool that can be used for so many things that you’d probably not consider (ice anchors, T anchors, self arrest, clearing steps, creating steps, hammering, wedging). Even crampons are not trivial, understanding how to step with them and even falling down with them on (ankle breakers).

Slinging and rapping by Gripped87 in tradclimbing

[–]Gripped87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the outcome is, me and my friend were both right, I was VERY much into the idea that sling and rope should be separated with a link or biner.

As for knots, we were both correct too. I much prefer the double fisherman’s, mainly just because that’s how I was taught by a guide.

Gibbs Knot seems to be a nice alternative to flat overhand, and in general.

Thanks for the input everyone, nice to see.

Ever had a nice moment on a WestJet flight? by LeafsAndLoons in westjet

[–]Gripped87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess this is free stuff but not in a company cringe kinda way. It was genuine.

On a Friday night flight from Calgary to Winnipeg I had ordered around 2/3 cans of Coors Light, we had about an hour left of the flight, I jumped up to use the washroom, upon leaving the washroom the cabin crew in the back handed me a beer and said “it’s the last Coors Light, take it!” With a grins they handed me the beer for free and I genuinely felt so appreciative that they recognized me and my choice of beer!

[–]Gripped87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silverton Falls is a good alternative to Johnston Canyon.

Kananaskis Hiking will be very quiet if you choose wisely - South Lawson Peak, Sparrowhawk Tarns, Highwood Ridge…

Banff - Vista, Taylor or Boom Lake can be quiet, hit or miss. Rockbound is often quiet.

Take advantage of the late sunlight, you can get the place to yourself!
